Jayba
They are used to lower the PH of water. Here is a link that explains it pretty well. http://www.aldercones.com

cainechow
Elk Island Park is just 30 minutes east of downtown Edmonton. <sigh>
flyfisher
Huh. interesting. I'm going to have to do some research and keep my eyes open while out and about. I don't suppose Prince's Island Park has any eh? That would be too convenient. I'm sure you could probably find some in Prince's Island Park, I have seen them in Fish Creek Park just can't remember where. I will try to be more observant when walking the mutt and report back. Fish Creek Park at Bow Valley Ranch follow paved path south across field to the creek clumps growing along paved path paralleling the creek, most clumps were within 30 feet of the creek. cainechow
Awesome. I've been wanting to give alder cones a try but have a lot of Indian Almond Leaves and couldn't justify going to buy cones Maybe tomorrow will be a day to go walk! cainechow
I think I saw the trees. They still had the serrated leaves, but I couldn't find any cones. I went west along the path the kids got tired so I'll have to wait until next time and try heading east instead.
cainechow
I'm going to check out Prince's Island today as well.
cainechow
Found alder trees but no cones along the river near Prince's Island. The city must have planted all male trees. On a slightly different note, I also found some oak trees by the pathway near Prince's Island. I'll probably collect some leaves when it dries up a bit here.
