Bruno
At the last CAS meeting, there was a place mentioned where cheap sand, gravel etc could be picked up - but I don't remember where that was. If anyone does can you please let me know? I need to go get some sand for a 90G
flash_oesc
No clue what was said, but playsand from Rona is pretty cheap.

nanmer
Play sand is a lot dirtier and rather boring. Target sells "pretty" sand!
Stefan
As flash_oesc was saying, if you are looking for a substrate, you should not disregard playsand as it gives a more ~natural~ look to your tank than several alternatives found on the market; it is cheap and versatile. Bruno
Thanks Nanmer, that was the place I was thinking of
nanmer
Play sand can't be beat as far as going for the natural look. The sand Target sells kicks things up to a whole nutter level lol.
Bruno
I am considering black sand. So while I like playsand, I am thinking if trying something different and dont want to pay LFS price for it
cainechow
Also play sand will increase your tds over time... if you aren't raising soft water critters it doesn't matter much.
Tigs
Nanmer, what sand are you saying is nicer than play sand? I'm looking at their web site trying to find something other than regular sand. Thus far, silica sand but that's about it. thanks, Antonio
nanmer
Black Magic or another product called Green Diamond (just doing my first tank with Green Diamond). I did quite a bit of research and it was recommended highly. Black Magic may have been described under a slightly different name, Black Beauty etc. It is coal slag and I found it to be quite clean. I have been using it for almost a year and my plants are doing awesome. Originally I did a type of dirt tank covered with Black Magic. Won 1st for CAS aquarium beautiful (over 30 gallons) with the tank. It is a 110 gallon long so I had to source something that fit my budget. Since then I got lazy and just used the Black Magic in my shrimp tank and the growth the plants are having is awesome. It looks just like Tahitian moon sand for a fraction of the price!
