HarleyBeautiful:

when you say the A/C's impeller keep getting clogged up. Could you be a bit more specific [ ? ].

What size A/C are you using [ ? ].

What is actually happening to the impeller [ ? ].

What is it you are finding in the impeller [ ? ].

Is IT the impeller or is it the magnet that seems to be plugging [?].

Like Albert suggested; may sand be entering the impeller/magnet [ ? ].

I hope you can shed some light on my querries.

I have a 150 and a 300 on my 33 gallon. the impeller actually stops rotating and I am finding nothing in the magnet\impeller. the magnet seems to "stick" when you try and put it back in the "slot" and has no free movement. quite possibly sand... will just have to clean it more often.

One more question _ After you haved cleaned the magnet and it's "slot"; Does it work proberly ? or does it still give you problems ?

Some problems with the magnets in A/C and other types of filters.

A - The magnet housing does get dirty. "Slime" and debre can collect.

- Remove and clean the magnet

- Use a Q-Tip to clean inside the housing.

- Check to see if the magnet has any scratches or abnormal wear on the surface.

THIS IS USUALLY THE MOST COMMON CAUSE OF PROBLEMS. [ MPE.]

B - The centering "SHAFT" must be rigid.

- This shaft is set in solid and must not "wiggle" or be off-center.

- The shaft is prone to wear, also. Visually check.

C - The magnets "shaft slot" is prone to wear.

- If this shaft hole is "oblonged" the magnet may run irradically or "STICK".

D - Has the motor every been overheated / or run dry.

E - The Magnets can develop "DEAD SPOTS".

- Remove the motor/impeller from the housing.

- Imerse the motor/impeller unit into a container of water.

- Plug the motor in. The magnet should spin freely and easily.

- If the magnet does not spin or appears to be "STUCK" , _ a dead spot may have developed.

In some case, installing a prefilter - made of the A/C type foams, will prolong the life of the impeller; by restricting the larger particulars from entering the magnet housing.

P.S-- I have one more question HarleyBeautiful

. - how old are the A/C units. ??

That is the same problem I had when I ran Aquaclears in salt water. I had to keep buying new impellers. I gave up and switched to Fluvals. I heve never had a problem since.
