Well I believe you can grow BIG discus without peat!! Doesn't make much sense to me. Most of the discus we have are tank raised(unless wild caught) and most grow out in the mid to high 7 to 7.8 PH range. I like to see my fish grow not some ugly brown tank that I can't see anything through!! To me its all in the care and the foods given!! Water changes EVERYDAY and a variety of food everyday. Beefheart to me is a must for growing nice big fatties!!! I feed falke, bloodworms and live blackworms. I haven't yet seen any really good evidence that peat can out grow regular clear water. If there is some I would like to see it. And yea I do raise and breed discus!! The only time I fool with water is breeding then its all RO!! 70% to 30% works fine for me and the fish lay eggs like there is no tomorrow!

This is known by any aquarist I am sure, that it is good clean water of quality and a healthy food choice along with plenty of room that allows any fish great growth. Peat filtering allows for two things for sure and that is better color and natural living cnditions which in turn should lead to a less stressfull life making the fish over all more healthy. The color of coarse being only nicer as with any South American which of coarse works opposite for African rift cichlids which seem to lose much of their color in low lighting. In My opinion, discus are kept in un-biotope conditions when placed as they usually are into heavily planted tanks with extreme lighting, when we look at where they come from in the wild. Mangrove swamps saturated with roots and branches and logs, and a dark blackwater in which few plants ever survive.

The size and shape of a discus in this case would have to do with, proper feeding, clean water and lack of disease throughout the fish's life which may lead that fish to temporary starvation. Since my move I have placed my geophagines in a more natural root and rock tank with only a touch of floating plants for cover, they have colored up like never before and look healthier than ever even after the stress of the move. In closing, I think peat filtering or addition of black water extract makes for healthier discus only due to lack of stress over all and the aiding in making for perfect water conditions for the species. Feeding and waterchanges though on behalf of the fishkeeper can be more detrimental in over all fish health. Temp can also play a great part in growth, too hot can make fish grow faster but shorten their lifespan, too cold causes slow growth but extends the life of your fish in any species. This is why fishkeeping is an art but being an aquarist is a science.

I agree with you to a point. But if you have tank raised fish they don't care about peat water nor do they need it!! If you have WILDS then I agree 110%. Most people I know have the discus in bare bottom tanks with nothing in them. I do see people with discus in planted heavily lite tanks and what do you have? Stunted football discus. Some people just want to keep them and it don't matter if they grow big or not, they just want them to survive. To me its all a choice that each person has to make. To each his own but 9 times outta 10 people will go for the clean clear water. So who has pics of Peat raised discus? I can provide pics of non peat discus anytime, just let me know. Don't wanna start a :boxer: so

Ok here we go!!! All fish are taken in tap water with a PH of 7.6,no additives what soever in the water. Water is aged in a barrel circulated and heated. I take the water out of the tank and pump the aged water straight back in. All these pics are of proven males and or females. They are all back into the community tank as I was not going to breed anymore. Got a call the other day and I guess after a little rest for the discus they will be paired up again and produce some more batches of fry!! Lemme know what you think and yes the fish can be bought if someone wants them!!

I was going to take more but my Red Turq pair are going to lay eggs again so I don't want to upset them. I also have a few crosses gettin ready to lay as well. They are quite a bit smaller but have good shape and lay a ton of eggs!! Most of my pairs are great parents, the red turqs are finicky one batch they raise and the next 10 they eat. Never really could figure that pair!! So Those I raise myself.
