captinstabbin
someone was kind enough to give me 1/2 5 gal pail of salt water sand. It smelt as if someone to a crap in the bucket almost sewer like, black towards the bottom of the pail. I cleaned it using bleach & water followed by a few thorough rinsings. Is that o.k to do & what the ^(% was that smell

jvision
When stuff sits in a bucket, it goes anaerobic - it was probably a mix of SO2 and other nice stuff. I'd use a triple does of dechlorinator when you add the stuff to the tank - just to be safe.
BlkWolfe
either rinsed the hell out of it or mildly bleached it. Lots of dechlor like Jason said. also worry about P04 and other nuisance algea promoting yummies that can leach out. I had one bucket from an old DSB that grew mats of hair algae for weeks after it was cleaned.
