  1. for equipment you can't beat J&L's prices but i highly reccomend red coral and hope they become a good compeditor with them. I have been to them all and its my favorite place to go. I pop into elite from time to time and they are the only other place I go to. come to think of it I have some credit at golds but it sooo far
  2. my emerald has been well behaved so far. I just put in a bit of an alge pellet every odd day and that seems to keep him well behaved thanks for the heads up though
  3. I have 10 Calcinus laevimanus (dwarf zebra hermits) and 3 Trochus Snail's and have no seen any issues with them. Also have added a emerald crab and my hermits run from him, its hilarious cause all he is interested in is algae lol
  4. Right now I am on just tap water. Its been 2 weeks and no issues but I just added my live rock today. My parents get RO water all the time, so I plan on switching over to that soon So far so good. But from what I know if you keep your GPH up you shouldn't have a problems with alge blooms Most people that seem to have run into that problem are only running 300gph in teir tank, right now i have 625gph. lol still not enought
  5. I am actually in the process of setting up my first SW tank. Decided to go with a 20H nano and wow does it add up fast What you have to remember is to take you time. First fill the tank with water and put on a good filter. Get your temp around 27-28 degree's and start adding salt. This is what takes time, to get the specific gravity that you want (around 1.023) you will need about 7lbs of salt to get there. Took me about 5 days before i hit that point. Than add your substraight (sand). Alot of people prefer live sand because you already have benifical critters living in it. Now what you can't go cheap on is your flow. With nano's you want around 850gph-1000gph. I personally went with a AC50 and will be filling it with live coral and i am just about to order 2 Koralia 1's unless i can find them for sale in calgary. Make sure you have good nitrate, nitrite, and ammonia levels before adding any live rock. Once you add your live rock your going to get an ammonia spike. And now your water change bucket comes into play. Keep a bucket at the same temp, gravity as your tank and have some sort of pump in there circulating it. Start doing your water changes until your tank is back to specs with all your tests. Now your ready to add your clean up crew. I am already a set up of myself here as I am at the stage ready to add live rock once i pick up my power heads. Its alot of work and its gets expensive fast. for my 20H i am already sitting above $200 so remember do not cheap out cause it will cause your tank to fail. lol i have never spent this much and even keeping discus seems alot easier compared to this. Well hopefully this helps a bit an anyone with more experience please help out
  6. good to hear, i am going to ask around before i get into it to. just cause i don't agree with wil caughts
  7. im not to worried about the cost of the tank. i would just like to see what i am getting myself into before i even look at buying anything. but i am starting to think of keeping my 10 gal as a fresh water and moving the rams and cory's up here and having my 40 gal tall for salt. now here is a big question. where do salt water fish come from, what i mean is, are they wild caught or captive. this just has to do with moral concerns.
  8. con someone direct me into the pro's and con's of a 10 gal salt water tank? i would really like a pair of clowns or something small by my computer. I have read the sticky's and searched on google, but the info i have found is just not useful thanks you in advance
  9. oh we had these in when i worked at petland, very interesting fish and they loved crickets
  10. never really collected fish, but i go diving to see different fish right now i have been to a couple spots in mexico and costa rica. if all goes well i will be back in costa rica this summer before school starts back up and than i have 4 years to beg my dad to take me diving. but i had to cancel out on austrailia and belize this year because of school right now my dad and i are trying to see a whale shark
  11. run down to river front and check out the blue germans there. its a great example of why they shouldn't be kept in large groups. it just shows what happens when large amounts of males. besides that my 2 females and 1 male get along great, and i just picked them up yesturday at river front. (they are amazing and eat will, i highly suggest anyone to grab these guys asap). i was actually looking for chocolate gramies when i went down and came home with these guys. but they are extremely territorial. they like the water warm 80-82 degree's. fun fish,
  12. wow, that is really cool. lol i wish my parents had an octopus as a pet when i was growing up. you would be the coolest kid in school
  13. oh that reminds me when i went diving in costa rica we were just heading out to our dive site when a group of about 40-50 dolphins swam by out boat. you have to turn everything off so you don't scare them off. mind you the same day when we were coming up after the second dive a bull shark swam underneith us (probably 60 feet below us) AWW i miss diving. trying to get back to costa rica this summer. this time i will make sure the underwater camera comes with me
  14. wow, that would probably brighten up every day for me
