  1. Will he fit in a large plastic food container or a 5 gal pail?
  2. My new tunze seems pretty good, only been running it for 9 days though. The Aqua C Remora is a pretty good skimmer for the money. I don't own an ASM but have seen them work and the skimmate is pretty impressive. There aren't many positive comments on the prizms or the coralife super skimmers, I don't own either, so no real opinion on those.
  3. My 4'x2'30" high cost $400, it's a nice piece of cabinetry. My 4x30"x40" cost $10 it's a piece of crap. The sky is the limit.
  4. Check out www.canreef.com. Go to the DIY section and search denitrator. There are a couple threads there. One gives a build list with costs. The reviews for the people who built them are positive. HTH
  5. Loaches love snails. Not sure what they will do to the rest of the inhabitants though.
  6. Probably has something to do with all the new horse turd rules the commie food inspection agency has implemented since BSE. SanFran either couldn't send it up here or it wasn't worth the hassle.
  7. I've got some. But I live 3 hours east of Red Deer. It could be shipped with no problem. Let me know via pm.
  8. If your looking for cheap alternatives forget about LEDs. Anything that will give enough light to grow anything is cost prohibitive upfront. They should pay for themselves in the long run with energy savings, but they are a long run investment.
  9. Use small a small power head to keep it aerated. I hate airstones when it comes to salt water. They create such a mess with the salt spray coming off of them.
  10. Those are just for night lights. They are of no real value as a daytime light. My daughters have 2 in their 5 gal tank for night lights, even then they aren't really bright.
  11. So what's the point. Living things eat other living things. I fail to see the problem. A couple months back I came across a coyote kill on my land. Looked like the deer was tortured pretty badly. I have no idea of the circumstances. I assume the deer had been injured somehow, the coyotes finished it off and cleaned up the carcass. Not really shocking, coyotes eat deer, simple. Like I said nature is a cruel mistress. Between Hybrid finding this stuff, and us replying this thread should get interesting.
  12. I didn't know what arrowana eat. Now I do. I bet it's just natural instinct, you know the, food chain. Mother nature is a rather cruel mistress. Really isn't much different from you eating an animal, your just removed from the animals death.
  13. Moldings are more for looks than functionality. I've seen pictures of tanks that are placed on cinder blocks. The blocks just supported the ends of the tanks, with nothing under the middle. Personally I like my tanks fully supported on much more substantial platforms. I'd sure like to be there if the tank did blow, it'd be gooood watchin'!!
  14. Too bad you live in the city, any small town abbatoir will have all the beef heart you can carry. Check in the yellow pages for butchers, smaller shops would probably have or get what you want. Give the ones close to you a call. If any of you know any hunters bird season opens in early September, then big game a little later. Should be lots of free hearts around. HTH
  15. I haven't seen any problems with the salt going into the septic system. Your going to put way worse things in there than saltwater. Detergents, bleach, toilet bowl cleaner etc etc. I wouldn't worry about it. I have a gravel driveway and sometimes pour the salt water on the weeds growing in the gravel. Once you get enough salt on the gravel it kind of sterilizes that spot. HTH
  16. Put the fish in containers or bags. Bag the coral seperatley so that it can't get banged around or broken. Put the rock in a pail of tank water. If there is sand in the tank I'd toss all but a cup or two and buy new stuff. Have water mixed up at your place ready to fill the tank. Make the move as fast as possible, several hours isn't a problem but taking a day or two may create trouble. Don't fret the move it's really not that big a deal. You may get a small nitrate spike after the move. A bit of die off on the rock will always happen. The die off shouldn't be anything major though. The spike probably won't be bad enough to harm the tanks inhabitants. Keep your eye on the water parameters for a week or two and keep some emergency water change water mixed up, just in case. Good luck with the move. HTH Brad
  17. Fiji is LR. Any of the salty store should have it or will get it.
  18. I used three two litre jugs in a 5 gal pail. Put a CFL plant grow light over top and bubble for about 14 days. I use new water, and started my cultures with DT's, I use miracle grow for fertilizer, the stuff with the lowest middle number I could find. Less phosphate, less chance of phos build up in the tank. \ What did you use for a starter culture. I've shut my system down for the summer and would like to start it up again when time permits in the fall. I'd like to get a few different species of plankton.
  19. They are just scavengers. I have lots of them, one I know of is close to a foot long. They don't seem to harm anything. Personally I think they are a valuable part of your CUC. I'm not sure how you would trap them if you did want to remove them. They freak some people out, I think they are kind of cool.
  20. No pics, and the wife is away with the camera. Four and two year olds really aren't a bunch of help at tank cleaning time. It is kind of fun though, until Mom see's the water all over the place.
  21. When I added the AC I think I added about 20% to the water volume. It is a pretty neat tank though. It actually has lots of room for more softies. Gotta love little girls and their little princess tanks!!!!!
  22. No they won't ship for $10 that is just the brokerage fees. The shipping is pretty expensive according to some folks on another board. If I recall the shipping comes to about $1/pound to Western Canada. You will still need some real live rock to seed the dry stuff. You will also need to go much more slowly establishing your tank as your filter (LR) needs time to seed. I don't think cycle is going to seed it very effectively, you will still need a small amount of real LR to get the dead stuff going. HTH
  23. Indy signs does lots of vinyl work they should have what you need. Not sure who else may have some check the yellow pages for sign makers, there should be lots. Indy isn't too far from your place.
  24. A thousand dollars is a pretty good estimate for a startup tank. It's far cheaper to do it right the first time instead of buying junk and then replacing it in a few months. Do lots of research before you put down any cash. Good Luck!
  25. Looks good. I like how you did the rock work, supported with the piping. For your background go to a sign shop and pick up some sign vinyl goes on easy and is pretty easy to peel off later. It's available in whatever color you want and will only cost you a couple bucks.
