  1. Thanks Greg. Yep, they sure are. These fish are always telling each other who's boss, it's fun to watch!
  2. Looking good Deborah! I'm happy to see another journal thread from you.
  3. Has anyone seen any of these African tetras around?
  4. Pretty much any of the smaller rasbora or danio species is perfect for a tank that size. I love the look of Celestial Pearl Danios and the bets rasboras are the dwarfs IMO. Microrasbora kubotai is striking. Wild bettas (Betta smaragdina, B. imbellis...) are definitely great fish, and don't overlook mouthbrooding types (B. pi, B. pugnax...). The best betta species available, B. macrostoma is a mouthbrooder, but don't consider it unless you have upwards of $200 to spare!! Other labyrinth fishes to consider are dwarf gourami and most of all, Chocolate Gourami. I love small loaches for a small tank too. Any Kuhli Loach species is great. Zebra Loaches or Schistura sp. are awesome too. I think there are more options for tanks 10-30 Gallons than for any other size!
  5. Just a little update with some pics, I am now down to four fish since the smallest fish died from ich. The other four are doing great, eating like pigs. The dominant male is growing fastest and his nuchal hump is really getting big. They are all enjoying their flakes, but I've noticed they like munching on the aufwuchs that has collected on my bamboo and stones as well. I'll post an FTS by Monday, and here are some fish pics for now... Dominant male flaring his gills... Showdown... Dominant male again... Bit of an argument... These fish are great, I highly recommend them  Taylor

    Hello!

    :welcome: to AA, Jason!
  7. Nice photo. I'm hoping to get an external flash soon too, do you just set yours on the tank lid? Keep up the practise
  8. Awesome shots. I like your feeding action shots, it's cool to see which fish suck their food in and which ones bite it.
  9. Hello and :welcome: Blake.
  10. :welcome: to the country and the forum!!
  11. Nice shots Patrick. I always liked the look of those nubila, they have a nice contrast of colour.
  12. I really like this tank of yours. The word "garden" really comes to mind and it reminds me of what I would have wanted my Aquaponics tank to look like. Keep up the updates
  13. The word biotope is basically synonymous with habitat. A biotope aquarium is one in which you try to replicate as best as possible a habitat that can be seen in the wild. Such as Amazon River (to be vague) or Cenote Escondido (to be exact). You can start with a vague setup and work your way up. So basically you make your tank as natural as possible for the fish you are going to keep. This is less important for domestic fish, but if you are keeping wild caught fish, it can make a huge difference. Not only do you want to replicate the environment (fast flow to stagnant, gravel and rocks to sand and driftwood), but the water conditions should be as close as possible as well. It takes a lot of effort to perfectly re-create a habitat, but it is more rewarding than any other "type" of fishkeeping in my opinion. Hope this helps, Taylor (PM me if you want any more info/ideas)
  14. :welcome: to AA! You should make one of the bigger tanks a biotope :hey:
  15. Looks awesome! Are the units both bolted to the wall?
  16. :welcome: to the forum!
  17. That's awesome! Good for you guys getting the show on the road
  18. I always get around to editing the pics that I would usually throw out in the winter months. These two pics were totally full of various problems (glare, water spots/drops, bubbles, and tons of debris). I've been bored so I went ahead and edited all of the junk out and the pics turned out quite a lot better than they were. This one is familiar, I think I posted a thread about editing pics a while ago. I showed the before and after of this pic, but the "after" version was still not perfect, so here it is... perfected! Esox Lucius- The Northern Pike Here's one I haven't posted before. I saved it because I thought it was a nice shot, but really didn't want to have to edit out all of the junk at the time. Couesius plumbeus- The Lake Chub, another breeding male I hope you enjoy these two shots! Taylor
  19. Nice setup, it looks quite natural for a planted tank.
  20. Nice series Patrick. I think this is my favourite species you keep. I'm curious which is yours?
  21. Crazy fish, he seems a little top heavy
  22. :welcome: to AA! I bet you must miss those beautiful Ontario lakes though, there is no comparison between those and ours (but we do happen to have some nice mountains ).
