  1. Wow its been a long time since i kept these guy and i miss them. Does anyone else have any p-bass or dats any more?
  2. I have always used a small round stone for substrate. Almost a sand but no dust floating in the water column. With baby rays i agree clear glass is way easier for feeding. I have always found sand destroy's my equipment and with out enough water movement it gets stuck to the slime coat on the backs of my rays. My rays never had a problem burrying them selves in the very small rocks either. Just an idea, others i find really love the sand, i have just had bad experiences my self.
  3. I have had a pond in my back yard for about five years now and have kept gold fish alive in it for the last three years with just the pump filter running in the bottom and punching a hole in it ever few days. I'm really not sure of how many gallons it is, but it is around 24 inches deep
  4. Ae there pictures yet i'm really looking forward to them.
  5. I agree with Blue Ram, if you are wanting to breed discus than set up another tank for doing so. MAke a nice show tank for them until they pair up and then seperate for breeding. Are you using soft water on this tank? Discus need soft water for breeding and to have there eggs hatch. i was also doing daily water changes on my breeding tank. The big show tanks i have are alright with a gravel substraigt but i vacume the gravel and water change quite regularly. I hope this helps.
  6. Good stuff, thier smelts in the red packages is what i fed my rays and peacock bass for almost 2 years...
  7. My tank is 72"x24"x30" and i'm running 2 fx5's, fluval 403, 2 seio power heads. Maybe its closer to 220 gallons i haven't done the math...I would love to run 2 aqua clear 310?s or i used to know as 500's but the euro bracing on my tank prevents it. I do 2 30-40% water changes a week when i have large predatory fish in it.
  8. I actually seen more agression starting in the larger sizes. It may be caused by the matureing of the fish or by size requiremnets. Like i have stated these are, will be very large fish so a large tank is required. I kept mine in a 230 gallon tank with a asian Aro,rays, and peacock bass for years, never had much problems at all but i did provide large hidding places for them. One other thing i should mention is keep up with water changes they are messy fish and they require good filtration.
  9. They should be ok for a while they need places they can hide in. they get quite large, i sold a few at 12" a while back.
  10. What size is your tank? i have kept many Datnoids to gether but there is alot of signs of agression in large groups.
  11. I too drain my pond and pressure wash it in the spring its harder with fish in it....lol do you heat your pond over the winter? maybe heat it in the summer and add a pleco?
  12. I also believe in trial and error with some species. I have been a predatory fish keeper for some years and never really had any problems. At first i was told i couldn't have done what i did with some of my fish but it worked out. I've kept rays with arowanas, Datnoids, Bichirs, silver dollars, Angel fish, and clown loaches in one tank and were talking large mature fish with no poblems for years....Some times you just have to try because you like the fish. I do not condone fighting between fish, but if everyone lived by this believe that agressive fish should not be kept together we wouldn't have cichlid tanks to enjoy.
  13. i too went to micheals for my shells and they really liked them.(fish told me) Alot of there are quite large.
  14. We used all the towels in the house and a shop vacum for about 3 hours, and then fans for 2 days. Also it was in the basement on carpeted floor.
  15. I have a 230 gal and a few weeks ago the diaphram in my eheime pro 3 went and over night the tank dumped 80-90 gallons, that was a bad clean up.Wife just about killed me ....lol
  16. Could your air pump have siphoned the water out? did it quit, do you have a 1 way check valve on it. Did one of your hand on the back filters spring a leak on the bottom draining your tank till they went dry? just some idea's
  17. macdre thanks for bringing up this post it has to be brought up once and a while. It gives everyone a chance to hear the rules and regulations of fish keeping. I would check into similar species to what we have here that you can import, ?How about a Nile perch (huge fish), peacock bass (crazy fast eaters, very fun to watch),florida gar all need a large tank and eat a ton.... When i was a kid i caught some perch and brought them home in a pale. we placed them in a friends pond, what a beautiful fish. 2 weeks later in the city of calgary a Blue Heiron landed in his back yard and ate all the perch. Never bothered trying that again....
  18. Looking forward to see how these led's perform and what quality of light they produce, Can't wait to see pic's i might want yor source for these.
  19. Mangrove would be nice i've seen it for sale here in Calgary a few times
  20. years ago i saw florida musky for sale at big als i didn't even know florida had musky but they sure sold fast....
  21. The one thing i recomend is using a sump system for your tank or at least on a your new tank. There is a huge bio load with aro's and larger fish. This is just somthing i wish i had on my 230 gallon tank when i was keeping asian aro's,datnoids, and rays. The canisters i used just didn't seem to be enough.
  22. I had a female Motoro kill a male by stabbing 4 times she didn'y want any of him and he really wanted her....to bad i could seperate them at the time but i wasn't climbing in there after it all started.
  23. I've been using shop lights for years with no problems. I have even grown some plants...
  24. I also agree with power problems being part of cause i would plug a cheap clock into the power bar and watch to see it it starts flashing at some point. Could be a power interuption?
  25. Its actually kind of funny my brevis were the most agressive little fish i've ever own. It has been the only fish the attacked me every time i put my arm in the tank to clean it....freaky little fella's
