  1. I bought a fluval 304 second hand, when I took it apart to clean it the vertical tray the foam sits in wouldn't come out. I've only ever dealt with one cannister filter before and couldn't remember if the tray came out of my other one. I decided to leave it. Now that I have everything cleaned out and ready to go back together I notice that the tray is sitting up really high, quite a bit higher then the baskets with the other media and I'm not able to get the top onto the filter. I can't remember if it came with the top on or not when I got it I can't see any spaces but it's really hard to see below the tray. Anyone have any suggestions? What should I do?
  2. Males have less defined spots also and when they get older they develope a line down the center of their stomach. An important thing to remember about them is they will not take flake or pellet food (I've never heard of one anyway), I've had a group in a 20g for a few years now and I feed them frozen brine shrimp, blood worms and live snails from one of my other tanks. It's a great use for pond and ramshorn snails  Also they can be sensitive to poor water so you'll have to be careful to keep up on your water changes and not overstock the tank. They are said to like mossey plants best but I've often found mine sleeping on top of the java ferns.
  3. Same! I just wish I could get around to actually building more of them!
  4. Oh no! Sorry to hear he got stuck. Ok, I'll hijack a little Here's some links for you guys on building caves. I've made the coconut cave with Java Moss on it and I'm thinking about redoing my 55g with less rocks and some of the PVC towers for my cichlids. I was hoping if I made the tile cave for my BN the cichlids would realize it was to small for them and not try to claim it. http://www.petfish.net/kb/13/ (main link, specific caves are below) http://www.petfish.net/kb/entry/349/ http://www.petfish.net/kb/entry/792/ http://www.petfish.net/kb/entry/790/ http://www.petfish.net/kb/entry/360/ (PVC condo's for cichlids) http://www.petfish.net/kb/entry/344/ (cichlid tower)
  5. That would be neat if they breed in them. I have always meant to make my pleco a tile cave but haven't gotten to it yet. If you need I can share the instructions, they're not hard.
  6. No, no reason. Just nothing in the budget for hobbies and I'm anxious to get that filter on.
  7. Is it ok to run the filter without floss or a filter pad? It's a fluval 304, I do have bio balls and ceramic rings, this would be the second filter on the tank.
  8. has hungry puppy dogs.

  9. Thanks for the input guys I'm off to tell Harold I need more fish.
  10. 10 acei and 5 yellows. 55 gallon tank.
  11. Nice pictures Where in Washington were you?
  12. Nice! Makes me want to go back too.
  13. I'd like to add a few more Yellow Labs to my tank but don't want to re-do all of the rock work. If I mixed a few pieces around and changed a few things do you think that would be adequate?
  14. Thanks, I'm not overly fond of breeder traps, I'll set up the 10 gallon if it comes down to it. I'm just not sure if I should try it or not. It's to bad Mom won't take them back. Someone has dug a massive hole in a new area of the tank.
  15. I've known people who use Prime but don't add every time they change the water. They've stated there have been no problems doing it this way. I forgot to add it once to my cichlid tank before I refilled it and ended up loosing a fish so I add it every time.
  16. I've found at least 2 tiny tiny fry in my tank while doing a water change. I'm not sure why they were loose in the tank instead of with Mom, I can only assume either she's spit them out because she's young or I somehow stopped her from getting them back because I started a water change. What should I do??? Should I rush and try to get the 10g up and going, pick them out (if I can find them again) and put them in it? Should I leave it alone and let nature run it's course? I'm well aware the odds of survival can't be that great for them. Will she take them back if they can find each other? I tried to tuck a little food for them in their hiding spots, I hope that doesn't attract the adults but I can't see them getting food any other way... there are never any left overs in the tank.
  17. I've just looked at the bag again and it does say "Flame Retardant". So that's an added chemical? Guess I won't be using it.
  18. Thanks, she is pretty young so that's probably it. Oh well, guess I don't have to set up that 10g now.
  19. I've found a bag of 100% polyester fiber fill and I'm wondering if I can use some of it as media in my fluval? It was meant to be fake snow from the look of the bag.
  20. It doesn't appear my female is holding eggs anymore... what could have happened and why? What's wrong?
  21. Alright I guess I'll move the plants they dig up, my tank is all gravel, no sand. Maybe filling in the holes and making them redig is giving them something to do? Or am I just ticking them off?
  22. My fish are digging holes straight down to the glass bottom and the behaviour seems to be increasing! Is this a maturity/mating thing? So far I've been filling in the holes and replanting during water changes, should I bother to do this??? They seem to be digging in the same places so I thought I might just leave those areas unplanted but this past week they've started holes in new places. What do you guys do?
  23. Actually, agility may help that, listening ='s big rewards in agility. All you need is a steady sit, stay and come.
  24. That's a pretty clever cat Both of my dogs try bumming when I'm feeding the fish. Chase used to lick the floor by the fish tanks for any spillage and now he just licks floors everywhere.
