  1. I bought what were called cobalt blue ( Maylandia callainos, Pseudotropheus zebra old name) and they were actually powder blue cichlid (Pseudotropheus Socolofi) You can see a cobalt blue zebra at http://badmanstropicalfish.com/profiles/profile44.html or http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/scateg.cfm?pCatId=1825 and you can see the other at http://www.fishinthe.net/html/fishguide/fi...n.php?nt=3&nl=5 at the third site you will see all of the aliases for this fish. Mine look like the third yours looks like the first ...hope that helps Harold
  2. As you can see I did use gloss, The next one I will try to raise the dents and go with a different finish. The one thing I have is lots of these pieces of plywood.Harold
  3. Any way thanks Tim for giving me a solid frame to start with. Now I am fishless cycling the tank because I have a lot of fish that need a new home. -ham-
  4. It certainly isn't perfect and black shows every dent in the plywood but I just finished setting it up
  5. When I bought this 50 gal from Tim (Rudy) he included the 2x6 stand. Knowing that it was certainly strong enough I set about to skin it with pieces of plywood that our new photocopiers come shipped with.
  6. I wonder where Als got theirs, there is no packaging just the stuff cut to the appropriate size for the AC in question.
  7. I have read through this thread and everyone is talking about replacement mech filter material. (white small hole foam) Does anyone know where to get the more porous rigid stuff that you use for biofiltration like the AC except in bigger pieces. I see that Big Als has replacement foam cut for the ACs but I want a piece approimately 8x12 inches about 3 inches thick for a pond filter I am building and want to pump 2000 gph through it. Thanks
  8. Hey we have our own topic!!!! My first question to the pond folks is whether alternative suppliers of pond plumbing exists such as underground sprinkler parts, swimming pool, whatever. I looked at flex hose at Big Als $3.99 a foot If anyone knows cheaper suppliers or alternatives please let us know. Another thing I am sure we would like to know is where an abundant cheap as in free source of decorative rock can be gathered up rather than paying 33 cents a pound at Burnco.
  9. Was at Big Als yesterday, they have a new pond setup and lots of liner. Speaking of liner, check the buy and sell I have some extra I am selling. BTW I noticed something interesting in the pumps for sale at Big Als. They are selling Cal Pumps among others and what I found interesting was the 2000 GPH model was $299.00 (same as one I just aquired) The 2500 GPH model had a price tag on it of $229.00. And the 3000 GPH was $399.00. Me thinks the 2500 GPH pump was mispriced. $329.00? AS well they had some juvy koi about 4-5 inches for $4.99 had some nice white ones in the bunch. My fish are still in tubs in the basement so I didn't buy any yet. -ham-
  10. When they have candlelight and soft music.....breeding When one is wearing a little tiny leather suit and has little whip ...... :bang1: DOMINATION :chair: : Sorry in advance : do
  11. Update -ham- -ham- I went into Safeway today and found the ammonia, Safeway general cleaner CLEAR not the GREEN and it goes for $2.58 for 1.8 litres. And hey just down the aisle a ways I found Septo-Bac by Kiwi. It sells for $5.99 for 8 packets which should be enough to treat the Atlantic Ocean. It probably is cheaper at Wal-Mart but the money I would have spent on gas probably evens it out. Harold
  12. Zellers had a 4 pack of 15w for $15.00. I have screwed them into the standard petcetera hood/light on my 10 gallon tanks and they worked well. You only need 1 bulb for a 10 and I would keep a burnt out bulb in the other socket to prevent it from corrosion.
  13. Whether fishless or using borrowed media the most important thing to do is test, test, and test. Subjecting a tank to 30 new habitants is going to give you a nirite spike sometime, and the good bacteria may die waiting for a source of ammonia>nitrites >nitrates. I would suggest either cycling with a throw away or better still fishless with careful monitoring afterward.
  14. I appreciate that but you do notice on my quote I said "IF." Enough said I think. :boom:
  15. Exactly like rahim101's picture. They are available everywhere. As to your question of when? When you see miniature guppies being extruded from the females butt region and not a minute sooner. Seriously though between 21-40 days usually about 28. How many? When there are no more minature guppies being extruded from the mother's butt region you count the babies and that is how many. Semi serious though it depends on the mother anywhere between 8 and 8000. Harold
  16. Oscarfan meant babies, I know he does :bang1: I once had approx. 250 guppys, guppies whichever, the male will sometimes eat the babies, or want to have sex with them, but I can tell you they are pretty good at hiding once born. If you put the mother in one of those plastic breeding pens they fall into a V channel through a little slot and thus are seperated from the mother inside and horny, hungry daddy outside. You then lift the mother and the V channel out leaving the babies in a little tank inside the tank. Feed them First Bites or crushed flake very sparingly at regular intervals until you find another tank for them or let them into the general fish population. Hope this helps Harold
  17. Welcome to the forum. If Petcetera sold you all those fish at the same time as you bought the ten gallon they should be ashamed of themselves. No one should have to learn about cycling the "hard" way. Ok rant over with, I am happy to hear you are sticking with it despite your losses. Please, please, please feel free to ask the people here any questions you might have like "How do I stop these guppys from having babies?" Or "do pickled guppys taste good with beer?' just kidding, again welcome here. :welcome:
  18. If only my gouramis bred like my nyerei. I tried a different female and now the male is blowing bubbles like he was full of dish soap. He is also turning pink around the edges which is interesting for a blue fish. My question to the world at large is should gouramis continue to feed while they are living in the honeymoon suite because they don't appear to be hungry. Needless to say if I get things done I will document everything and take pictures for anyone intersted in breeding labyrinth fish.
  19. I bought a rubber nose pleco (Chaetostoma milesi) for $6.99 at Petsmart in Calgary and the specs say they don't get much bigger than 4 inches. I got mine at 2 inches, he is hoovering a 20 gal juvey tank, and he has not grown a bit for the couple months I have had him.
  20. Big ALs was advertising a fish that would eat hair algae I think it was a Flag fish.
  21. Cool looking piranhas kinda scary when you scroll over and find yourself looking in his mouth. I don' t know what kind of application you are using for your pictures but you should see if it has a feature for saving your jpeg as a web ready picture. I use microsoft picture it beause it is cheap and fairly intuitive for simple touching up and manipulations of photos. It allows you to save as a web ready picture in quarter, one half or full size which is only 75 kb in size. Hope this helps.
  22. Check out http://www.fishprofiles.com/ What I found interesting is they say a Jack Dempsy would be compatible. I do know a guy that kept a betta in with green terrors with no problems. Of course gouramis get along with bettas although most get too large. My 3 bettas only want their plant for company and get pissed if you remove it. Of course the bettas are in separate bowls.
  23. Rick is right, an ultra violet light unit worked into the plumbing would provide a continous solution. Petsmart on Macleod had some clearance units and bulbs about $120 for the unit and I think about 15 for extra bulbs. A uv unit is on the to-do list for my pond this year as well as much bigger pumps and multi stage wet dry filters. Harold
  24. The other thing you said was that you are using well water. I think you should consider testing the water for contamination either from leeching from say livestock grazing or high phosphates from waste water contamination. For some reason you are providing algae with a large food source.
