  1. sweet pics !! looks like a couple of them loaches are of the Sumatran variety
  2. jeremoose I must be the luckiest guy in the world then with my stock and even luckier to still be alive from drinking tap water with all the bacteria in my intestinal tract dying by the millions with evey sip with that logic lol... sorry bro we'll hafta agree to disagree on that one
  3. OK usually the simplest answer is the right answer and I'm sure in this case as well. Here's my best learned theory 1) Lack of O2 and surface agitation for a thorough gasseous exchange 2) Plain old fish stress due to high stocking and/or lack of swimming space None of us are at your house to witness anything in person, sometimes making accurate diagnosees is a real crap shoot otherwise. I have certainly seen my 2 submissions several times before and it has happened to me as well once upon a time. I do not subscribe to the theory of washing your filtre as being the reason whatsoever. Sorry but giving it a rinse does not kill the whole thing I've never had a spike in 30yrs of doing so when I had hobs or canisters. So unless you boiled the bloody thing your filtre is fine so lests remove the fear factor of various advice you've had so far especially when every ready is zero. Lets get real dudes ! Maybe increase your water change schedule as well to see if that helps. Another long shot idea is perhaps something is leaching into your water by way of onaments or wood etc that you've recently added or if it not perhaps these fish are more affected by what was already in there whereas the others weren't. This is certainly a long shot suggestion cuz as I said none of us are there to see in person. Best of luck I hope it works out alright for ya
  4. any kind of loach or botia will eat snails as part of their natural diet and will continue to do so in home aquaria. Like val said zebra loaches are small and leave plants alone. give them a try. Also clown loaches do very well in harder water with a high PH so you should be ok there as well... just my 2 cents
  5. I'd get a piece of glass and and fix it bro. A piece of 1/2" should be around 100 to 150 bucks at the most maybe even less especially if it's recycled plate glass. Remove the whole section and replace then use the new side as your front. that way you can still get use out of the tank and have a shiny new front.... take your measurements and call around, it's not a lost cause by any means and its easy to fix I feel for ya dude.
  6. ummm call me crazy but perhaps an easier or safer non chemical IE: more natural approach could be... and i'm just thinking out loud here bro.... but why not "seed" your filtre with colonised portions donated to you form friends and members ?? I'd be willing to bring you some from my big bad boy tank filtres. just an idea cuz when i set up my monster tanks I just split the filtre from a running set up and voila just add fish .. works every time and it doesnt take as much as you'd think and then do an initial a 50% during the week if you already have fish in it and no probs. works for my stocking list and havent lost anybody ever.
  7. middle of nowhere as well had to miss out !! grr....
  8. Only illegal in the US, just like Arowanas b/c they can get loose in the southern temperate waters, here in the Great White North we can have at er' same with aquatic plants. they can't own many of the species we can for the same reasons
  9. Hmmm I'm gonna play devils advocate here... I dont see anything wrong with what he's doing. The old english guy on River Monsters does the same thing using local bait fish to catch what he's after. I don't recognise any of the species he's using and catching as protected or endangered in fact most are nuisance introduced species. I actually found the article quite informative and interesting.... Perhaps you've read too much into what he's attempting to discuss. sorry but that's how I see it lol..
  10. Dyed fish are gross... remember the glassfish 20yrs + ago ewwww however this GMO stuff is interesting ... Bring on the Mammoth !!!
  11. I can't come this time grrrrr. away on business. sorry no giant vals for $20+ for me this time around hahaha sorry to whomever brings em ... lol
  12. sweet pic dude !! wicked colour on him.... even better in person I must say ...
  13. This is a punitus sp. barb for sure but hard to tell if it's one or the other species. this specimen is a female so the colours are a bit drab. I have had both species and they are truly beautiful in groups as long as there are several males with a couple females to display for....
  14. I sure hope a store didnt charge you 20 for it lol... If he's a decent size he may become aggressive as well... I'd keep my eye on him cheers
  15. I can personally vouch for Shine !! Boydo is an awesome guy to deal with.. He has a lot of passion for the hobby and offered the highest quality specimens I've seen. I bought my golden crossback from him for a wicked deal and he was worth every penny. I keep the same hours and lifestyle as Boydo and know how hard it is to keep up with the hobby when life's on overdrive... think before you speak people .... and yes happy fish keeping always good luck finding your Aro, try Henming Lee he might find you a decent specimen
  16. mine is about 14 inches, from what i understand they do take forever to grow so a lot of patience is required. At nickle size I bet they're quite darling though and already a couple months old at that.
  17. hmmm good call.. couldnt hurt either way...
  18. dude what happened ?? you seemed so keen on it ! I was thinking of doing the same thing to one of mine....
  19. you can get suction cups at Princess Auto. They're about $15-$20.
  20. of course you dont give er... one person tilts back and the one in front pulls. It aint like a runaway freight train, just know what each person is supposed to do. Works everytime for me to get a tank downstairs thats standing at the top on one end. suction cups help but not necessary.
  21. We have the same issue. All my tanks are in the basement. suction cups are a great idea. You and one other person are able to move it down. have someone at the top as it tips back to guide it and one guy to pull the bottom so it starts to slide down just make sure it doesn't run away on you lol.. but it's not that bad once you map it out.
  22. LOL yeah they do have layers dont they. I didnt mean to over simplify. however there must be a way, perhaps some sort of algorithym maybe. i wonder if there would be someone at the UofA to speak to like a professor or something like that. Cuz now I'm curious, so if you figure it out please share.. best of luck
  23. Does anyone remember highschool biology ?? I think the Punet Square would be able to predict the outcome with a high degree of accuracy. Hey if it can work for hair and eye colour as well as sex in human reproduction it should be able to predict colour in Siamese Fighting Fish ???
  24. I've gone 8 weeks due to being away at work, I changed it out of guilt more so than it smelled which was actually quite good. As for a re-scape about 2 -3 days I think
  25. hiya Matt, I'm Stan and while I don't have nearly what you have for rays I do have a male motoro in a 260gal. he has tons of personality and is quite social and friendly. If I had my druthers I would own several pearl and leopoldi rays as those are my favs. perhaps at the end of summer i may get my chance.. cheers
