    MCI

I have been following THIS post on APC since last May. I was an early sceptic; it has evolved into quite the dicussion. Mr. Barr even got his nose in there - read it yourself to see how he fared. Grab a comfy chair it takes about two hours to read and cross refernce it in its entirity. I am curious if anyone has heard of / read / practices the regime ? I have been implementing it for sometime and would like to discuss it with folks 'round here. I have read it over and over and would really enjoy to pick through it and possibly convert a few of 'yas over , , , to the sunny side of the street. PS - I have seven planted tanks @ home with light intensity ranging from .5 WPG up to 7 WPG. There is ZERO algae to be found in any box.
  2. Is true! I read about them on wikkipedia; now I know they grow to 25 inches and will work in a 15 gallon tank. THNKX Wikki !!
  3. Got to see me an oddball yesterday :smokey: - if only for a second A gentleman was in line ahead of me; picking up some sp. order fish at the LFS. Pretty good size for a newly aquired , had to be @ least 3 inches. The other specimen he made off with I did not recognize. It had the shape of a clown knife; although it was jetblack with two or more very well defined white splotches on the lower err, ahh, peduncle?
  4. , , , its like money, , , it only matters if you do not have it. Have you ever seen a jacked up 4X4 driven by a guy taller than 5' zip ?
  5. Thanks - a happy Ameca can be triple yellow. They maintain the plants. They are a lot like aufwuch eaters that way. They will graze all day.
  6. These are going in the 29? Your plants will love you for it. The best way to get them to behave is to make them find their own food. Fat Ameca's are pugnacious - skinny ones wander all day. That action however, would starve your bottom feeders. I find they are re-active; they chase the surrounding airspace. They are active @ all levels. Anyone is fair game. Oddly enough I have had about 100 in a species only 75 gallon and rarely a ripped fin to be seen. . They leave my pl*co's alone, other than @ feeding time. They have no qualms whatsoever wrestling for food. :chair: Very hard to catch standing still - here is a rare pic in focus
  7. Ha - Ha, thats why they call it quick sand. You in it now. Welcome to the jungle Do not buy fertz on line. If your neighbor down the road charges a reasonable price - buy it there. Then when we all need bulbs they will be there for us , 9-5 to sell us more.
  8. With a little math the costs can sometimes be justified Example 400 CAC shrimp from Toronto Cost $85.00 shipping $25.00 Thats 22 cents each as cost per shrimp Thats 7 cents each to ship total cost per shrimp = 27.5 cents 400 shrimp @ LFS cost $ 5.95 each X400 = $2380.00 Depanding on availibilty and quantity it makes ( dollars ) and sense very quickly
  9. Everything is more fun when you make it a game! Why not? If it is not doing much you have little to lose. Grab a chunk and put it in a shady spot. You may find it does the trick. The Java and Tiawan moss grow faster in my low-light non-C02tanks. What is the Temp? Moss and heat make strange bedfellows. :boom:
  10. Just to be contrary - I do not believe any of the above recommendations are shrimp safe. :boxer: As far as I know only cory's will abide shrimp
  11. How picky are Bristlenose Pleco's about species? I have a Male sold to me as "wild caught Peru" What are the chances of finding him a suitable mate ? Do BN interbreed? I do not wish to angst the 'L#' purist crowd but they all look the same to me.
  12. I would agree. I have four year old gold barbs who snack on even the largest cherry shrimp. As for tank mate suggestions - that is a toughie. My P. Furcatus ( blue eyed forktail rainbows) can eat cherries half their size. The only thing I have in my 'main' shrimp tank is kuhli loaches. Truth be known - I never see the loaches. They may prefer to eat in private
  13. Ahhh, yes, left brain, right brain, - no-brain soooo, complicated !! I have always admired hydrocotyle ; just never seen it offered for sale
  14. Cgy_Betta_Guy On the lower left - is that hydrocotyle ?
  15. This is a pond built from a plastic laundry sink  - don't laugh yet it gets better. 1" PVC pipe snugs into the drainhole of the sink. It surounded by a bottom sieved 2" PVC pipe - Viola instant herbie. The bottom ouside drain terminates via a bicycle tyre-tube into the super-store bin sump. The sink could be painted or bricked in for looks. Here is a photo showing the slate light hood I built
  16. Could be residue transferred from a static cling background. What eats vinyl? WD40, Goo Gone, Beeswax.

    Algae Magnets

Has anyone tried a D.I.Y. version? Them baby's is exspensive.
  18. Howdy neighbour ! :welcome: I am not much of a vacc'r myself. I direct heavy filteration output @ the substrate. This 'kicks up the dust' a bit and sends it all toward the filter. I am not sure if your account will accept PM's @ this point. Save your bread for equipment - I can fill your tank with plants :smokey:
  19. How did it get in there to begin with ? Here is a fresh take; to answer the question specificly - you cannot. We are talking about microscopic bacteria. "Ya' gotta catch 'em all !! " these are not pokemons. You could start with a sterile tank and still have BGA. Aviod the conditions within which BGA grows. Increase circulation Increase nitrate Increase waterchange / gravel vacc frequency PS,. Ameca spendens will eat BGA

    20 Gallon Long Planted

    Any plans for lighting?
  21. Great, now I need educating; how can one tell the difference between that and Ammannia senegalensis You surely have the second part covered :shifty:  :shifty:
  22. Update. UPDATE still wide open
  23. If you are seeing egg sacs they are from pond/smaller snails. NOTHING I have encountered will eat these sacs. Apple/brigs/spixi's all lay thier eggs over the water line. Egg sacs are usualy serendipitously found up in the canopy. If they cannot get above the waterline they will not breed. All snails keep a lower profile when there are no curoius fish around. Stop gravel vacc'ing
