  1. Note, there are differences between nutrients and organics I have always enjoyed , although not entirely understood, this page Substrates for the planted aquarium
  2. The bun feet will allow the miosture that WILL eventually spill its way down there to evaporate. Not sure if that was the intention of the design; but the explanation is logical.
  3. Do we factor by 17.9 to find ppm? Even 4 X 17.9 would get you only 68 ppm kh. Is this typical of Calgary water?
  4. I purchased a scale accurate to hundredths (X.YZ) grams. What a riot!! Things I have learned so far... some dry goods will double in weight in short order a loose spoonful of powder can weigh three times less tha a packed one 1ppm of phosphorous for a thirty gallon, is less than you can press in to the tip of your index finger phosphorous burns when you press it into your finger tip ENJOY !!
  5. This is a result of the bulbs CRI Colour Rendering Index Many street lights are HPS-High Pressiure Sodium Nearly all of the light is in the red end of things. Hps rendering is around 27. High quality daylight bulbs are closing on 90 Further off topic ,,, Many digital cameras now have a "white balance adjustment" Using the available light you "tell" the camera what white is. Then, it has the ability to make its own adjustments from there.
  6. :smokey: Fourteen pages? I will have to get back to you on that one :smokey:
  7. I did not know you were from Taber! I went to high school @ Myers! Two types of moss. They were growing above the waterline. When I kept their feet wet( In a HOB filter) they took off straight away. When I dunked them they had to adjust and completely die off before re-generating in an underwater form. To date both are doing well. from my experience I would worry about the fish Not @ all 20:1 bleach Three minutes for heavy , tough and rooted plants(swords etc.) Less for stem plants All manner of crawlies I imagine. I was only brave enough to give larger fish what looked like fairy shrimp. I do not have experience or an authorative answer for that one. I have read that some live food may have the robustness to exit a small fry in the direction of thier chioce. I would be concered about that!
  8. There are a few of us around :welcome:
  9. SCORE!! That is exactly ( some names and locations have been changed) how we got our fisrt aquarium ( 29 long)
  10. Do not pull it!! To address the question specificly. Keep removing the yellow leaves and hope for the best. The Phoenix may be re-born from the ashes!! As for advice I would say that if you can not see any root than you have it buried to deep. Just tug upwards by a healthy leaf until a little root shows. Plants lacking nutrients will start to show less than ideal leaf formation over time . You are not forming new leaves @ this point. Pehaps not what you wanted to hear; but I would not expect robust growth with that intensity of lighting.
  11. Does this concept include (constantly) circulating water ?

    RO/Di unit

Excellent choice!! On the TV anyway
  13. I have put Ameca fry that size in with my Golden Wonders. They did not seem interested. Rams are higher bodied as well. Have you ever thrown any thing live to the killi's? They ( as I am sure you know) are FAST fish. You will know how it will turn out in about one half second,
  14. Java is the 13th largest island in the world and the fifth largest island in Indonesia. It is mentioned in a few songs by Ween, and I think coffee comes from there. Yes, BFM, I did intend on exploring the possibility of utilizing locally harvested and transplanted specimens. I did try an Ameca with the new moss, it is doing just fine !
  15. I though Java fern was from Java. Use caution Ish. The plant I put in with my Amecas killed them , staring from smallest to largest. The whole process took three hours
  16. I tried a stem plant last summer, it poisoned only one of the five species I had in there. I collected moss earlier this spring and it seems to be growing well enough. I still have the fear
  17. First I have never tried it. Also we know this. windows do not provide overhead light sunlight varies in intensity the sun is gone by 4 in the afternoon during winter NO ONE gets more light in Canada than right here in Medicine Hat Alberta By all means give it a burst--- Try EVERYTHING ----- @ least once :eh:
  18. I may change my vote to plastic
  19. Has anyone had success with locally found plants thriving within their aquariums? I tried it once before and it was disastrous. This time ( yes, I did it again) all seems to be going very well
  20. I agree , and I have said it before some of that hygro will grow by candlelight.. And I am making an assumption here, as most ten gallons will not get much light.
  21. I have purchased a 75G set up complete with sump. Is it possible to retain CO2 in a system like this? I enjoy plants in all my aquariums. There is certainly enough light available to get the job done; although, I am concerned I will be wasting my time ( and money!) if it is to violent to retain CO2. Will deep water run still? :eh:
  22. I do the opposite. Treat the like stem plants. Pull the old growth. The new growth is going to be algea free robust not blocking light from other growth besides we all like sumpting new!
  23. Tell me the winner is yet to be declared; I worked hard on this one. beat this
