  1. IMO, your quarantine/hospital tank should be large enough to comfortably house your largest fish for at least a month.
  2. if the two fish were housed together previously and are the only fish in this tank then i wouldn't worry about quarantining the one that is having problems, as the other fish has already been exposed to whatever ails the other one. if the labs are in with other fish i would definitely remove the one with odd behaviour to a quarantine tank. i can't say i've ever heard of that sort of behaviour (the odd swimming/pressing on the ground) but i had a bolivian ram in the past that would twitch and it didn't live for too long. never did find out why it twitched, but loss of vision was part and parcel of its passing i think. is the lab in question otherwise in good condition, eating, pooping, etc? if so i would just let him be and hope for the best. maybe its problems are stemming from not being cared for properly by the previous owner and in your care, with increased water changes and monitoring, it will get better? we can only hope. keep us updated!
  3. lol, yeah it does sound a lil sadistic. once all the snails in your tank are eaten by the assassins, what is your plan for feeding them?
  4. i have a Rena XP2 on my 55 cichlid tank along with a Top Fin dual output hob. i love my Rena!!!!! (and don't care much for the dang topfin hob, lol) had it for about a year now and no problems at all. media is fairly easy to find (in deadmonton at least) and the baskets make for easy media rinsing. best thing is you really don't need to buy the Rena media, you can use whatever you want and make it fit in the baskets (pot scrubbies, sponge cut to fit, any biomax type media, any filter floss). a new Rena will come with the sponges (4 - two coarse, two finer) and if i recall correctly it came with the custom cut filter floss too. the spray bar is good but i like using the jet nozzle output attachment better, as it seems to give a greater flow of output.
  5. leaves turning yellow indicate an imbalance in the nutrients the plant is receiving, from what i have read. i don't dose ferts in my planted tank and i have no yellowish leaves or unhealthy plants in there, so unfortunately i can't give you any advice on what to dose. hopefully some of the plant experts will pop into this thread soon. i wish you luck!
  6. am not a garbage picker! lol. it was sitting on the ground beside the recycle bin. so does anyone have advice on how to go about resealing this tank? between the chrome and the glass there is a black tar substance and i need to know if i have to remove all of that or if it's ok to leave it and just redo the silicone on the inside of the tank? here's a link to it on photobucket (oooooh...... shiny....... lol): BFM's free retro tank!
  7. Welcome home to Alberta Aquatica!
  8. so me and my kidlett were walking from the transit terminal up to the mall near home and i see the sunlight glinting off something beside the recycling bins in the parking lot............ a vintage chrome trim 20 long! glass has hardly any scratches, and the few that are there are only on the bottom panel! the chrome trim is in perfect shape, and all it needs is a good cleaning and resealing. Woo hoo and yay me! i'd post a pic but AA is trying to tell me that a 16.1 kb photo file is too big an attachment..... wth?
  9. to be honest, the photo doesn't really do the colours justice. i have deep green jades, nearly purple blues, bright yellow goldens, and ivories that are nearly platinum. they're growing fast and will soon be available for sale if anyone is interested!
  10. literally! lol. thought i'd show you all the various colours of my baby briggs (apple snails). had to take them all out to rescape the planted tank (had to make sure they didn't get buried!). i figure there's at least two dozen, and they're growing by the day! sorry for the small pic, dang cellphone camera.........
  11. if i had your tanks and your fish i'd move the goldie to the 5 gallon, as the current tank (2.3 gal) with tankmates is much too small and the bioload is way too high for that size tank. maybe a betta for the other empty 2.3?
  12. Welcome home to AA! i don't live in L.A., lol, but my mommy does, does that count? lol!
  13. currently i'm only breeding and raising apple snails (Pomacea bridgesii). i have goldens, ivories, jades, and blues. some ivories are nearly platinum!
  14. if you could post a photo that would help us. you mention it is 'peeling off from the body'. i'm a lil confused. do you mean the whole fin is coming away from the body of the fish where the fin connects to the body? fin rot does not 'peel away' the fin like that, most often it slowly (or quickly, depending on severity) disintegrates the fin from the outer edge inwards. perhaps the jewel was fighting with a tankmate and the tankmate bit the fin? a photo would help us help you. if it is indeed fin rot, i would do daily water changes of a large volume (at least 50% or more) for a week to see if a clean environment will help. if no improvement after a week then you need to consider medication. don't 'dump in' products that are not designed for the specific problem. Cycle is not designed for healing fin rot or injuries. keep an eye on the other fish so that they are not picking at the affected area of the jewel, and if you do have to medicate i would set up a hospital tank (a 10 gallon should work fine) and have just the jewel in there so that you are not a) wasting medication by dosing your main tank, and not causing undue stress to your healthy fish by medicating in the main tank.
  15. yes, throw it out. if it is expired it will not give you correct results.
  16. i'd rather not have to sign up on yet another online this or that, i belong to too many books, buckets, forums, and fanclubs already, lol. normally my photos are not a problem to load but this one time AA was trying to tell me my attachment was over 1 meg when it wasn't even 70 k. dunno what was going on..... oh well.
  17. mts, when used in lower case, can also stand for Malaysian Trumpet Snail.
  18. unless i put the albinos back in the 10 gallon i probably won't be having fishy babies anytime soon, what with an albino rainbow shark in the tank they are now in. dang hoover sharkie, he eats all and any eggs laid in that tank. oh well, got about 11 snail clutches waiting to hatch out so i'll have shellkids to raise up anyhoo. might try again in a couple months.
  19. i work right around the corner from AE and i can say the number of people that have stopped by during the weekday noon hours that are very disappointed that the store is shut down has been quite a few over the past couple months. i see this when i go for my noon-thirty walkabouts, lol. i think it would be wonderful to have another store that is owned and operated by one of us, like nature's corner is by Henry. and the idea for having the more exotic and rare fish is great, fish you don't have to pay an arm and a leg for at stores like big als. as for speaking with the former manager, i could put you in touch with them if you want.
  20. came home today to find ALL the cory eggs white with fungus on them! and thats even with the airstone i picked up going gently in the breeder box. dagnabit! next time i am definitely going to use an antifungal. so no cory grandma status for this crazy fish lady.............
  21. ok, so i put the eggs in the plastic floating breeder trap. couldn't find a way to get the insert thingy to cover the holes in the bottom of the trap so to heck with it, if the cory fry end up gallivanting with the endler fry so be it. i was going to just leave the eggs on the glass since i managed to move the parents out, but got the breeder trap just in case and glad i did, because when i got home from shopping today i noticed one of the larger endler fry picking at the eggs. my airpump has decided to grow legs and hide somewhere (i don't normally use one but keep one around just in case) so i'm not able to get an airline in there tonight (read: too tired to go tearing apart closets for air pump, lol), but the breeder box isn't very far from the filter output so i think there is a lil bit of water flow through the box, so not too worried for the night. eggs were a lot easier to get off the tank glass than i thought! plastic measuring spoon worked great for that. picked out the ones that looked white and tossed them, since i've read and been told that white = fungused eggs. every once in a while i'm going over to the tank and gently moving the breeding trap up and down in the water a little to help with water circulation in the trap. good idea, yes or no? also, what is the maximum time the eggs can be out of water and not be damaged? and now the last question for this post, i promise! lol. so if the tank is at a constant 80F and the eggs were laid at some point between 8:30 am and 7:00 pm on Friday, when can i expect wrigglers? i've read anywhere between 3 and 9 days, depending on what info you glean from.
  22. what a lil cutie, and very nice colouration!
  23. nice rack! hahahahaha! (hey, somebody had to say it! lol)
  24. wow, thanks for all the info Guppygirl! much appreciated! i have managed to be able to move the parents out of the tank, so no worries on them eating the eggs any more. i did buy a breeder box, the plastic floating kind (all the lfs had), but it has an insert that looks like it allows for the holes in the plastic to be blocked. we'll see how it goes. i do plan on putting the eggs in the breeder tonight, and i'm going to remove the few that i've noticed have gone white. i don't have an airstone for the breeder box so would just putting the airline in there work, on a gentle flow? as for feeding, the lfs today had no fry food that wasn't a ridiculous price for an itty bitty container, so i'm going to try powdering nls, shrimp pellets, algae wafers etc and target feeding the fry with a syringe. any comments on whether this is not a good option? the tank all this is happening in is a 10 gallon, filled nearly all the way, with an aquaclear hob (rated for 30 gallons i think) and the intake tube has a net over it to keep creatures from going for an impeller ride. is there anything else i would have to do to the filter for the fry to be safe once they are out of the breeder box? i plan on removing the box and having them free in the tank once they are about the same size as the endler fry that are also in this tank. other inhabitants are baby apple snails, but i don't anticipate any issues with them. all comments and suggestions are very much appreciated!
