cool, thanks for the advice guys. The Brush algae is not everywhere yet, the takeover has just begun, I think I will remove any that I see on the plants, overdose the tank with excel, and turn back the lights a bit. I'll let you know how it pans out. DK

Hey guys; So my tank (planted/tanganyika tank) has gone through all kinds of algae changes since I started it up, first there was the brown algae, then that was taken over by the green algae, and now this black brush algae is taking over my tank. It is beginning to be a real pain as it clings very strongly to my plants and looks like shite. I did some reading and besides finding out thats its quite hard to get rid of I read that increasing the doses of excel might cure it, has anyone here experienced this black brush algae? and has anyone had any success getting rid of it with carbon?

Hey Felixc; Thats awesome your going for the same type of setup, I love it so far. My anubias and Limnophila aromatica are doing pretty good too, however I think the red tiger lotus is on its last legs . As far as algae goes Im in the midst of the battle between brown and green algae, I am getting lots of algae on the plant leaves as well. For pleco's I have a clown pleco, the blue phantom, and a few otocinclus. The blue phantom and clown seem to stick to eating the algae on the rocks and glass, the only ones that really clean the plants are the oto's. I thought they might not like the high PH but all seem to be doing fine. The clown pleco is a real algae vaccume, but he doesn't really touch the plants. Hope that helps

Just got my 100 gallon back up and running, woohoo, and have the following tanganyikans in it: -4 gold head compressiceps -4 black calvus -5 synodontis petricola -6 julidochromis transcriptus -1 brichardi -Also have 1 clown pleco and 1 blue phantom pleco in there -(hopefully will add a neolamp tretocephalus soon).

Thanks for the advice J, I've got a few nana's attached to the rocks they are just very tiny atm, and the lanceolatas are tough to attach, but maybe I'll attempt to attach a few. I cannot wait for the dust to settle to slough shark, I mixed in some seachem onyx sand with the black flourite sand I bought and holy did it make the tank cloudy, its been 3 days of filtering with filter floss and still have silt. The tank is actually full of fish, have 5 petricolas, 4 black calvus, 4 goldhead comps, 6 julies, and a few oto's, they are just tiny and hard too see through the muck. Still waiting for my blue phantom and butterfly pleco's hopefully they show up soon.

Finally finished most of my basement off and got my 100 gallon back up and running. I love tanganyika fish, but also love to have plants in my tank, so decided to combine the two. Everything seems to be going good so far, fish and plants both seem happy just hope it stays that way . Big thanks to Harold (fairdeal) for the calvus and compressiceps and another big thanks to Jen (shanyesmommy) for the julies. Only have one decent pic of the fish, but will test out the camera skills again soon to try and get some more. Any comments would be appreciated. DK

Im just about to start my 90 gallon tanganyika too, going to have 4 black calvus, 4 goldhead compressiceps, 5 synodontis petricola, 5 julidochromis transcriptus, and two plecos. I have the petricolas already and just love them, I would recommend a group of those for sure. As far as other tanganyikas I have looked at the Paracyprichromis nigripinnis or tri color cyprichromis are cool fish. Daffodil brichardi's and Neolamprologus tretocephalus are also nice fish from tanganyika I would consider but they are abit on the agressive side. Hope that gives you some ideas DK

Had a little 28 Gal sitting around so figured I would try my hand at a planted tank. Have a eheim 2215 for filtration, some T5HO lights, and a 250W visi-therm for hardware. The substrate is a mix of seachem onyx sand and flourite black. Tank is about a week old and all the plants seem to be growing good with no signs of an algae outbreak yet (fingers crossed). The current inhabitants are 3 Red rams, 2 Oto's, 1 clown pleco, and 1 yoyo loach (he is wierd, likes to be alone). Any thoughts/comments are appreciated.

Thanks for the comments guys . She is almost full grown right now, around 8-9inches long I would guess. Hopefully will be getting her a mate at the reptile show on the 24-25th of May, can't wait for babies!!

Sorry to hear about your king tiger boom. Did you buffer your water or use it straight from the tap? I don't plan on adding anything to the water, but will probably use 50% seachem onyx sand as the substrate to keep the PH up a bit. My goal is to have the PH around 8, hopefully the pleco's can handle that.

At first I was looking into plecos that would like the hard/alkaline water, but after some reading I found that lots of people have kept soft/acidic water pleco's in their tang tank. I will probably do abit of acclimation in another tank, to get them used to a higher PH and water hardness before I toss them in the tank. Will let you know how it goes down. Might be an expensive lesson, but if it works, blue phantoms in my tang tank = awesome.

If you really want a digital PH meter, I would suggest going to Ebay: http://search.ebay.ca/search/search.dll?fr...igital+ph+meter. Got lots to choose from and they are cheap.

These rocks are from Burnco, and the algae does only seem to grow in high light areas. Don't think it is brown algae or a reaction as I get the same purple algae growing on my substrate and on the tank glass. Wierd, wonder what the hell is in those rocks?
