  1. not really as green as it looks, but the light is going through a couple Lily pads and other floating plants.

    Hello

Welcome =) picked up some of the same fish myself.
  3. would you be able to tell me how to get this thing hosted so people can download it!! I could host it if the file isnt to big. matt ditto
  4. And what rules should apply? post a price, or just say you're looking for something over the next 6 months and are unsure of what value you would like to pay?
  5. I had an 'all-glass' heater bought from e-bay with the name 'all-glass' stamped on it. Heated the tank up to 90+ degrees. felt like bath water.
  6. I know a store specializing in plants alone that sells high output t5's. more lumens per watt than any other light on the market. one light complete with ballast 48" long for about 36 bucks, a few more bucks if you want the 10,000k spec. pm me if you want the address.
  7. I've studied ich quite a bit online. Just thought I'd share some of the mechanics. raising the heat speeds up the life-cycle of ich and has no effect on killing some versions of ich. ich pretty much is everywhere and the fish's own immune system fights it off. heat can also boost the immune system. I've got a tank with clown loaches and have never had an ich outbreak. salt prevents the ich from surviving very long in the tank without a host. don't dose so much salt that your fish are stressed, you could make the problem worse. There is an advanced form of ich that can live and reproduce within the fish untill it dies, never relying on the outside water. At that stage, time to quarantine and medicate. On a side note I've seen a tank cranked to 90 degrees with a malfunctioning heater. Some fish loss after three days. And yes, ich can live at 90 degrees. Most of the fish were warm water species.
  8. I used to run my aquarium water through a mini hydroponic garden. Didn't do a water change for 9 months. The water did develop a smell after 2 weeks which I don't know how to test for but I assume it has something to do with plant waste. nitrates were between 40-60 ppm and stayed stable there. I changed the charcoal when the smell developed and it went away.
  9. Anyone else think these fish are growing a lil fast? I put them in a breeder when I first got them for fear they would be eaten. Today they are half the size of full grown blue rams. I think I only have one left who could possibly eat them.
  10. This topic spilled over into other boards now. I don't like posting links to other boards, so I'll just post this. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Re: Australoheros sp. "Red Ceibal" Postby Bas Pels on Tue Nov 04, 2008 2:59 am I keep both, and as they were kept in ponds sharing 1 wall, and jumped, the fish got mixed It was, however not hard to separate them Red cerbail are red - on the body. The eyes are brownish, and they have a slightly higer body Valentines are yellow - with red on the fins, and red eyes. They bodies are somewhat lower build Further the valentines are, when guarding fry, swimming somewhat higher in the water - although both species take the fry to the higer regions of the water, with the fry swimming above the parents. however, when looking closely at the fry, one of the parents jumped into my face. I never had this with Red Cerbail. (a nice way to surprise friends ) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Re: Australoheros sp. "Red Ceibal" Postby Felipe Cantera on Tue Nov 04, 2008 10:33 am well...my english is not enough :? ....but there is a lot of diff. between "Red Ceibal" and "Local"....better than (wrong) words, look at the all the pics on the site; www.aqvaterra.com ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you look hard enough on his site you'll find a lot of information on these and more to come about their natural habitat. Also be carefull about which sites you do read from, I've seen photos on the net that seem to fit the wrong species identification. And if you're really desperate to goto that board, the link is already in this thread.
  11. I'm glad your experience is better than mine. I had customs problems(on an in country shipment), doa, missing items. Buying intown may be a bit more expensive, but you get a live plant this month and no extra headaches. I'll goto natures corner store from now on.
  12. Anyone had a problem with all-glass lids breaking due to light heat? I have 2 t5's with nothing special about them. Though they arn't sealed in a plastic container and are proped above the tank. Anyways both my lids are cracked from heat(I can touch the lights with my fingers). I would like to purchase some better quality glass(of the same measurement) that can take some heat because the stuff provided isn't up to par. My tank is an allglass 90 gallon with the two panes on the top.
  13. posted in new thread rather than hijack one.
  14. Wasn't sure they'd hatch.. but they did.. and it isn't perfect water. I counted about 8 that got fungus which the parents have removed. I know it's not clear but in the back of the flower pot you'll see lil fry with their tails wagging up against the back, it isn't algae. I do plan to photograph this fish when it isn't breeding. The two I have are possibly still very stressed as two sets of fish who are territorial are trying to breed at the same time. Their eyes are still completely black and their coat is like dark grey on black.
  15. I think the Red Ceibals are nicer. The ones I photographed have some eggs right now while the others have stayed much darker. I thought it was just stress. Whats odd about this fish is that it's been rubbing on the eggs for 3 days now.
  16. Join the rest of us in hmm and haww while we decide if that species will be beneficial or too aggressive, too docile for our tanks. And while most of us have this urge under control and spend only a reasonable amount of time there, I have a niece that due to her daddy's 7-9 tanks once upon a time will do anything not to go there. My gf on the other hand who doesn't actually like fish was able to take her classmates there one day during break and teach them things.
  17. I e-mailed Spencer Jack's after not hearing back from Mike. These fish are in fact Valentines, the others are not the same. Hey Darren, Mike indeed get the locales with me last year. (valentines is also referred to as Australoheros sp. locale) when they are not in breeding colour they do look like a lot of the others, but for example scittulus will have a bunch of cheek spots that stand them out. The red ceibals when they breed go orange if not almost to red in the body where locales will go more yellow and are much darker. (the ceibals are pinned up against brazil where the locales that mike has are about 300km to the south of their location. If you look on my website the picture of the Blue Neon Gymnos, mike got the locales out of the exact same water to give an idea of the habitat. Over all though most of the differences on australoheros really show up in breeding colours, other than scitulus and such that are easy to tell apart by the cheek spots, or even red breast cuaro that have the start of the red belly even at a young age (and are taller bodied) Cheers. Spence
  18. Any idea about which 3 months in the year Uruguay has the cold season? There is a store that sells mini a/c's that do a good job cooling a 5' by 5' area, or possibly I could build my own. Also any word on if anyone has successfully bred these apart from some egg photos? or what might excite breeding?
  19. Picked up 4 of the same myself! this is what they will look like http://cichlaholic.com/uruguay_list.html#pasopache
  20. I cannot be sure untill I contact the person I bought them from. It was once believed that 30some species in south america were one species. lots of them look exactly like Geophagus Iporangensis. Just thinking there could be something that my eye isn't trained to look for. But otherwise yea, they probably are the same. Just to add while searching on the net, when I got the fish they looked exactly like this http://cichlidamerique.bb-fr.com/amerique-...os-spp-t191.htm
  21. Found a site referencing these fish. http://winnipegfishforum.info/forum/galler...um=61&pos=0 specifically interesting "Australoheros that I brought back in my suitcase from Uruguay." So, no specific local ties. I also e-mailed the previous owner to confirm species identification.
  22. not 100 % sure on the name, I also found this link http://www.cichlidae.com/gallery/species.php?s=555 . I know that these in particular didn't come from Spencer jack's. AUSTRALOHEROS VALENTINES is what the bags were labeled as. They also change color patterns and instead display a single black stripe similar to a Siamese algae eater.
  23. Just thought I'd share some pictures of this rare fish. Picked up 4 of them at the Edmonton auction. I don't know a whole lot about them, but from what I've read online with similar species from the area, I may have to make a separate tank for them and run a cold cycle for 3 months at 60 degrees. I also picked up some GYMNOGEOPHAGUS PASO PACHE which really are too small to care about photographing right now.l
  24. Please keep in mind this is a 10 gallon tank. Clown loaches get 16 inches in size and prefer groups of 5 or more to thrive. Clown loaches still take a long time to grow. The snails should be long gone by the time they become a problem. plenty of time to resell them. On a negative note, very prone to ich, should not be medicated, and may eat some of your plants.
  25. It would appear so. My research was limited to 'co2 aquarium' on ebay.com and whatever poped up. After reading about Carbo Plus, I now realize we use almost the exact same technology at work as a method to control where an underwater item should rust. I'm sure the voltages are different and on a much larger scale.
