I bought 25 lbs of clay today for $28. Which is a lot of clay(think about a large margarine tub). I'm going to make my own and get them fired. Oh and it's the real non toxic clay(not polymer or glue clay). Let me know if anyone else is interested in doing this with me. Chances are I'll have a lot of clay left over.
  2. strips are fine. But it's good to get results double checked. Otherwise do a water change.
  3. Make sure the fish are kept in clean healthy conditions and their own immune systems will take over. By the way while turning up the heat does boost their immune system in some fish. It also speeds up the life cycle of ich. You could also add an amount of salt to the water(aquarium not table).
  4. do corydoras eat planaria?
  5. tried it once. My fish tore out all the dirt and ate the plant.
  6. The sprinkler heads are pretty powerful. It seems to make lots of splashing at any water level unless you submerge them. I however like seeing the top of the water and will probably lower my water level even more in the future and perhaps start planting emerged plants on driftwood. As for timers I don't really understand where we would be going with them. Unless you wanted to simulate a different type of environment. My goal at the moment has simply been for oxygen.
  7. It was many many years ago and I don't remember. Sorry. It was most likely a very strong mixture.
  8. perhaps formaldehyde would work better? It is naturally part of some of our fresh water streams in the mountains. I know that bleach leaves a film behind due to the time I washed out an aquarium with bleach and killed all my plecos when they sucked on the glass. I washed it out ten times after using the bleach but it didn't get rid of the film. Finally a vinegar bath fixed it.
  9. I understand in some parts it's a constant rain that doesn't stop. Anyways it's main purpose is very rich oxygen waters. As for the cool rain effect the plastic will insulate so I would have to move it through an aluminum pipe which could then be cooled by a modified mini fridge or computer heat syncs.
  10. I came up with this idea to combat my constant oxygen problem. It's overkill, it works, and it's cheap. I'm not so great with artwork but if anyone wishing to copy this needs more detail I'll be happy to provide it. Ideas for improvement 1) you could buy more of the expensive hose and put a computer heat sync on it to chill the water just a bit. It could simulate cooler rain to help induce spawning. 2) One could also try hooking it to a canisters return line. Current problems 1) a sponge is required on the pump or you have to clean the sprinklers often by shoving a pin through them to clean out gunk. 2) Anywhere your tank has an open space it will splash water out. I used saran wrap to temporarily seal the holes until I get new glass cut. parts list 1 x aluminum bar the length of your tank 4 x plastic tie wraps 1 x 3/4 inch cheap hydroponics shop hose the length of your tank roughly. cut to fit. 1 x 3/4 inch elbow 1 x 3/4 inch expensive bendable hydroponics hose (89 cents for 1 foot) 1 x water pump mine does 300gph and has more than enough pressure 6 x plastic sprinklers from hydroponics shop ($1.20 each) Hint: You could match this to the power of your pump And as requested a video of the sprinkler in action

How do you think this compares to a python?
  12. Lost them all in the fire but I'll be looking to add a few later. Have been thinking about satanoperca daemon just because of the name.

    I love the caves EowynJane!
  14. If it's not the water try to find another stresser. New tankmate? failing heater? electric shock? soap on hands?
  15. I know everyone always wants to go straight to the meds and when you tell people something simple like lots of water changes no one listens. It sounds like bad water to me. I'd be doing some massive water changes.
  16. These are a rather unique species often keeping wild habits while bread in captivity. Fiercely aggressive while mating but docile the rest of the time. Plants can be kept with them as they won't be harmed except while defending territory. I found this odd as they're actually taking the kids for a walk at great risk of loosing some.

    hello

We LOVE Winnipeg here. Especially Spencer Jacks. Now you have to pay extra to get fish from there lol.
  18. I as well have used lights for years with no covering. Never had an issue until I put them too close together without enough cooling and blew the circuit. Upon closer examination I also found some parts where water may have arced across. I never sealed my tombstones.

Ok the baby bottle was a BAD IDEA. The pleco was trapped in there. while the pleco was co-operating with me and keeping his fins closed it still took quite a bit to get him out of there. It's due to the way the spout on the bottle is shaped and the fact that it opens wider on the inside.

Feel free to hijack this thread a bit and share. No reason I can't try both.
  21. In some natural lakes the ph can swing from 6 to 8 in a day(ok maybe one recorded ever). The fish are less concerned about ph than about what chemicals are in the water. When you start adding chemicals like crazy to compensate for your ph flux is when the fish start dieing. ph shock is more of an urban myth where as osmotic shock does happen.

This is the first use I've seen since putting them in. They seem to have served as hiding places for smaller fish until now.
  23. Was looking for a cheap way to do this. I hate shipping and no one seems to be responding to pms. So I found glass baby bottles. Not sure how well they work for breeding, but this guy seems to think it's ok! It was 3 bottles for $2 at dollarama(yea so it's the trailer park version). I found no sharp edges and they're meant to cause no harm to infants with chemicals or anything else.
  24. They may have found something they like better while the supply lasts... like maybe algae on the wood. And sometimes the wood.
  25. I find I would like most things in my tank people say 'ewww gross' to. But that is amazing!
