  1. I was wondering who would get the bonus fry, as for the snail. I have lots more where that came from
  2. 5 synodontis petricola, 1 Echinodorus rose, 1 Echinodorus red special?,1 Echinodorus ozelot red, 2 Echinodorus red diamond, some heaters, some killifish and a few other things that i really did not need, but they were cheap so why not.
  3. i have lots of guppies, endler's, pingu's, swamp guppies, and a mixture of other fancy guppies mixed through out most of my tanks with angel fish and female betta's these are probably the most aggressive to the guppies. i have not added salt for 6 months or more since i ran out. i have lots of babies in all of the tanks except where the betta's and angel fish are. they eat the fry. i will even admit that a couple of the tanks are over crowded from them breeding and as a result i am sure that the water quality is low in that tank. i do weekly 30-50% water changes and they are heavily planted tanks. i think guppies are very easy fish to take care of. when buying fish from pet stores you just have to check carefully that the fish are healthy and the other fish in that tank are also healthy. i think that the live plants are really helpful to their health as well. as for why your fish are dying, sometimes it is hard to tell. over crowding causing stress. or tank mates causing stress. also parasites.
  4. Diy c02 would be fine for that size of tank. The betta will most likley kill the shrimp
  5. some times the plants will go for more than pet store prices but some times especially towards the end of the auction the prices go down. also most of the time the plants at the auction the plants will be healthier and or bigger. i will be bringing about 14 bags of plants. just make sure that you know the type of plants the you want, some require high light and c02. lots do not.
  6. lol i was just going to ask if they would want a donation of duck weed. it is either donate it or throw it out.
  7. Dead mans flats campground, near Canmore
  8. i was thinking about two bags of endlers, 2 or more bags of cryptocoryne wendtii, 2 or 3 microworm cultures, a bag or two ludwigia repens, ameca splendins, pogostemon stelata, possibly java moss, a large bag of limnophilia sesafloria, a few amazon swords, riccia, pearl weed, java fern, bronze coydoras,
  9. this pic was taken from the bridge behind the zoo
  10. while checking out my tank on the weekend i seen my red jewels laid eggs as well. they were on a piece of drift wood. i took the eggs off the drift wood by hand (i wasn't sure if that would work or not) i have never had cichlids before. i put them into a 2 1/2 gallon tank with a sponge filter and heater and some methylene blue. probably half of the eggs have hatched now. not sure what i am going to do with them if they live. i just got these guys less than two weeks ago.
  11. troll falls in Kananaskis i had to stand in the creek to take this picture it was really cold a pic i took on the way to troll falls
  12. i have 4, 40 gallon tanks with holes drilled in the bottom 6, 18 gallon tanks with holes drilled in the top corner and 6, 10 gallon tanks no holes and 2 or 3, 5 gallon tanks no holes. i would like to build some sort of shelves for these tank. the drilled tanks i would like to put all on one system i have an extra 40 gallon tank that i could use for a sump. the 5's and 10's could be on a separate shelf/ rack. i was a framer and have all of the tools / knowledge i would need to build this except for a table saw.. the problem i have is that i dont want to over build this thing or under build it. normally i go overkill but i think that would take up too much space. how long of a span could i do with 2x4 doubled up on front and back, could i go 8' or would i need 2x6 to go 8' an what the verticals? the 40 gallons are 3' long i was thinking about putting the 18's sideways but every second tank there would have to be a 3 or 4" space between them. not sure which would be the best way to set this all up. any suggestions or ideas? thanks
  13. the holes in the leaves could also be from the loaches. i read that somewhere i dont remember where. i am new to loaches, the tanks that the loaches are in the swords all have holes in them. when ever i buy new sword plants almost always the original leaves die off. then the new ones grow back. the other plant could also be a hygrophilia plant that they have as well. i think they have two different types of hygro with the long leaves
  14. the bad father spawned again. i was watching them closley this time and i was waiting till they were done and i was going to take both of them out. well i had super and when i checked again he had eaten most of the eggs again, there was maybe 10 left. i took them out, turned on the air and put some methylene blue in. the other ct male in the tank beside his also spawned at the same time. i left him in, i will give him a chance. even though 4 of my last spawns i lost all eggs.
  15. i had a different pair in the tank beside the bad father and the two of them were just swimming around not really caring about each other. i was just about going to give up on them when i came home to see that they had spawned. unfortunately the next morning i woke up to no more eggs. the ct male and his partner were not doing anything, the female was always hiding. so i swapped out the female with a different one. i also went and found another nice looking ct male. he seems a little young but looks good. they aren't really doing anything yet but it hasn't been very long so i will wait and see what happens.
  16. Canon Rebel XT with a Canon EF-S 60mm macro, full manual + Canon 430EX flash in manual mode from above. I can't remember the settings exactly but the flash was probably 1/2 power with built in diffuser, ISO 100 and the aparture pretty high to get good depth of field I'd say between f12 and f14. Shutter I never touch when using the flash, it's always at 1/100. when using the flash how do you keep the water from looking yellowish? the only light you use is the flash? do you have a special tank that you put the fish into to take the pictures? is the flash mounted to the camera? the minumum focusing distance of this lens is 20cm that still seems like a long ways away.
  17. Ya Home depot has the 6500k bulbs as well, I just got some for my house the other day. That's when I figured they would be good for my 10g. If I get 2 23w bulbs do you think that would be a bit extream for the tank, I will also be supplying CO2 with a DIY. i would try it. just keep an eye on things. i have a 5 gallon with a 20 watt 50/50 bulb in it. i have no c02 just the occasional dose of excel, there is a lot of algae in that tank, and its a plastic bow front so it is really hard to clean the glass
  18. You can get 6500k twister bulbs. But they are sometimes hard to find. I know that canadian tire sells them in 3 different wattages.

    New Racking

i need to build a rack for some of my tanks but i am worried about building a rack that wont hold the weight, but at the same time i dont want to over build it either. what does your shelves look like underneath the tanks and how did you attach the shelves to the vertical supports? could you take a picture of the underside of the shelf?
  20. what kind of plants are you trying to keep? you could try a diy c02 just to try it. if you are planning on having lots of plants and high light you will need c02 i have always had live plants but until last year i just got high light and c02, and it is definitely worth it. i only have diy c02 i am running it on 3 tanks but would like to put it on more of them. i would also like to try a pressurized c02 system, but they are a little on the pricey side.
  21. GE silicone 1 windows and doors. NOT bathroom and kitchen
  22. the flourish excel will melt the Vallisneria. and you dont need to be a member of the calgary aquarium society to buy stuff from the auction.
  23. i would redo it if it was me. but i work with silicone almost every day. i always left them along if they did not leak, but recently i resealed a 45 gallon that i had and it looks great now. i am glad i did it. there is a few other tanks that i would like to reseal. i used silicone 1 clear. i cut away the old silicone but i made sure to not cut in between the glass.
  24. Marimo balls take about 5 years to get to be 2" in diameter. And anubias is a really slow grower. I would stop fertilizing for now and cut back on the lighting. I am not sure about the wisteria or the hygro, I have a type of hygro that has hardly grown at all. Try some plants that grow faster. That will also help with the algae. The plant will take the nutrients before the algae gets it
