The kh and gh are fine. It is Calgary water. It is hard. I wouldn't try messing with it. Just get plants and fish that can grow in hard water.

I once left a large anubias plant in a bag for over a year. It didn't do great, But it didn't die. I added water once (1/2 cup) and added more air twice. It sat on a ledge by the window. I also kept Java moss in a bag under a grow light for 2-3 years. Only to add water maybe 5 times. This one I also would flip the bag over maybe every 4 months. Both of these bags had very minimal water, so the plant was growing out of water. I suspect the Java fern could last a year in the bag. The ludwigia will probably die regardless. I wouldn't consider red ludwigia or any red plant a beginner plant. I would only add that after 6 months of having the tank setup and growing plants well.

if krazy glue gel is safe in reef tanks, it will be fine for fresh water! now days everything causes cancer.

that is a great idea! use the gel super glue. you wouldnt even need to take the driftwood or rock out of tank. just put a dap of glue on root and then put into water and stick to what ever. it works for saltwater and soft corals so it will be fine for fresh water. you may need to hold it for a few seconds

what about fish? or snails? i "had" a loach that did that exact thing to a few of my plants. my plants are now just recovering from that. what fish do you have in there?

in my emersed tank, (without water) or at least very little. i had noticed my hygrophila angustifolia turning colors and kinda looked like it was dying a while ago and was going to throw it out, but i didnt. and now it has flowered and has several other flowers that are going to open soon. and here is a picture now if only some of the other plants will flower.

what camera lens do you use? do you have one that you use for the majority of you shots? what about for you bird shots? a few topics back you had a pic of a humming bird, what was your shutter speed? great pics!

honor system. if you really wanted to, you could have adults, they could spawn, those eggs could be no good and you just buy some more and then hatch them.

how did you get hours the last time you did the auction? i would imagine it would be the same? what qualifies for hours?

i mixed florite black sand with some gravel once, i did not like the way it looked, it was hard to clean. the plants grew fine in it, but i would not do it again

i know we are looking for more volunteers at the next auction. i could use a volunteer to come and clean some fish tanks and filters?

i have also found that when i am more aggressive with the breaking part it went a lot better. and i use the broom stick as well. or some sort of wood that is narrow. i dont use lubricant. i just wear gloves when i do the breaking part. i also put the broom on the edge of a sturdy bench or table. then i also put something reasonalby heavy on the glass that is on the table. the weight is to prevent the glass from jumping up. the first few times i was trying to break glass i was a little shy on the breaking part, now i just go for it, and it works great

i use those bulbs in a few tanks, i think the only thing that is wrong with them is that they make the water look a little bit yellow. but other than appearance of the water they are fine for plants. but then again most 6500k bulbs do that. it seems like the cfl's cause the yellowing a little bit more 2 13w bulbs in a 10g tank is a lot of light. they might cause algae until you get a good balance of light, ferts, c02 (if any), plants, and fish you could try 1 6700k bulb and 1 bright white cfl. that might make the water look cleaner. but it might not, i have never tried it

i use pps pro, and it works great. i would never go back to the store bought aquarium ferts. i dont want to say how long i have gone with out a water change, but it was quite a long time. all of the fish and plants were healthy and the water parameters were good. i sometimes forget to dose once and a while, and i have not noticed any negative side affects i bought the ferts in a store in Calgary. quick grow on Edmonton trail for about $50 i have a few years supply.

the lid is not very tight, i have a humidity gauge in there. it stays around 70% i did nothing except add crickets and water, when the water level got down. for crypt wendtii, java fern, java moss, and anubias they can go back and forth emersed / submersed with no problem. the sword can not. it is the only plant that is not doing good. it is still alive, but stayed very small. and the submersed leaves melted off. some crypts are more sensitive than others. wendtii is not one of them the crypt has identical emersed leaves.

I planted some aquatic plants 7 months ago in my red bellied toad tank. crypts, moss, anubias, echinodorus rose and some java fern. since then i have added only crickets and water. and have done nothing else to the tank. light is on 12 hours per day. it is a 13w cfl 6500k here is a pic from 7 months ago. and a pic from tonight. and a closer shot of the spathe. it is the purpleish thing in the middle

or you could leave the leaves the way they are , and try and get it to flower. mine turned green with red spots as well when it hit the surface. my lotus with pics of flower the plant is fine, and healthy. i let mine flower, just too see it. now i have it trimmed back and all under water. i trim any leaves that hit the surface. my flower hit the light and got burnt. it would have lasted a lot longer if it didn't get burnt. it is also a night bloomer. closes during the day and opens at night.

i was looking through your photo album and seen that plant in an older picture. it looked healthier before. i would defiantly pull it up so only the rhizome and roots are under the gravel

how deep is the gravel? the plant looks like it is a little bit too deep in the gravel. but it might just look that way. in the picture, the gravel looks 4-5 inches deep. if it is that deep, i would pull it up closer to the surface. right now it looks like the base of the leaves are buried as well. the only part of the plant that needs to be buried is the rhizome and roots. even then, i have lots of crypts that are just floating and growing fine.
