  1. Not so sure about that, lost a few fry to filters! That is an issue with filters in general, as apposed to an issue with over filtration. My fry seem to do better in the filter, so I leave them alone and dump them back in the big tank when I clean the filters. I now use media bags over the filter intakes to keep the fry in the tank. They reduce the flow less, are easier to keep clean, and don't let any through. If you wallet can take the price and your fish can take the current you don't have too much filtration.

    Timers

I have a bunch of digital timers, the Wallmart Woods and Canadian Tire Noma, and have not had an issue with any of them over the years. The Woods are the power bar intigrated and the Noma are the standalone ones. The LFSs seem to cary units (Coralife, Zilla, and maybe Newtek) that looks just like the Woods but claim to be aquarium safe, where the Woods cliams end to life and limb for aquatic use but still seems to work well.
  3. Thank you and I have 3 more bettas, females though I dont know if I will keep them or not, I had planned to breed the bettas but maybe I just dont have the room for bettas right now. I am looking into buying purebred guppies so I might sell the bettas to help getting them instead. Thank you Teenage obsession with breeding...
  4. But the water in the jug came from...? It was filtered to remove...?
  5. Best thing to do is add a bit of heat, feel lightly, and don't kill him. You can also add 1 teaspoon of aquarium salt per 2 1/2 Gal of water. http://www.bettatalk.com/betta_diseases.htm seems to have some decent advice.
  6. If the heater is not broken unplugging it will have no effect on daytime tank tempature. A working heater will only turn on when the water is less than the specified temp. With your low light plants and your high output lighting I would think a few hours a day would be more than enough growth time.
  7. I often see people asking more used for a tank and stand than I paid new on boxing day for mine, but at the end of the day it is what it is worth to you and make an offer. Different items depreciate at different rates. There is also the nice guy factor and the getting taken for a ride factor. I have a bug hangup over end of warranty and old batteries. Then there is the condition.
  8. I think ACE did a great job of the auction, and I liked the awards. Only possible negative is they don't have more space for auction table viewing. There seemed to be a good selection, items seemed to have decent prices, but it was very crowded and I think I had a different expectation of manners and edicate than more then a few others. I had a lot of negative interactions, minor things that seemed to occure more than usual, but that could have been magnified by the small space and large turnout.
  9. My cats could be interested in surplus fish, but no room in the tanks.
  10. We have a pair of them, and they are flimsy once filled past 1/2. I would not expect it to last seveal years. Dirt will add some support ifwell packed, but if you added a few braces to the outside the plastic would just deform around them. You could ask your landlord or PMGR, and I suspect as long as you fill it in and repair the grass you will be fine, but should they come buy and just find it there could be friction and or packing. You will also find low cost pond liners (think I saw one today) that mak everything easier as it i what it was designed for and does not look as goofy sitting in the ground.
  11. in a move of solidrity I have also chosen not to vacuum or do housework this weekend.
  12. The sticky http://albertaaquatica.com/index.php?showtopic=6071 in general discussions has the addresses.
  13. 2 left in Alberta, one each in Calgary and Edmonton. About 15 in other provinces aswell.
  14. Perhaps mounted on 1 meter articulated arms.
  15. Looks like the consensus is all small skimmers all suck, not to bother with a filter, and just use a bunch of live rock(2lbs/Gal) and PWCs. http://www.aquariumadvice.com/forums/f101/nano-protein-skimmer-123088.html I love this guy's 20 (gone now) http://www.nano-reef.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=119022 and like both his writing style and the debates they had.
  16. I would like to encourage everyone regardless of situation to make sure all items are taken care of before they leave the building, especially with live stock.
  17. I have always wanted one, and know exactly what I want and how I want it all to go together. But I have a deep dark secret, I am way to much of a sissy to touch stuff in the tank. I had an Endler jump out and I could not grab it with my hand to put it back in the tank, and the stuff I want needs hands on maintenance. Oh, and I can't afford it yet.
  18. As long as you realize liking the idea and it being a good idea are not necessarily the same thing, at the end of the day it is your time and money to play as you want. Do what seems interstingand fun. You can always buy stuff later if you need. Half the fun of this hobby is trying and playing.
  19. I think you just need to take it one peice at a time and go slow. Temp depends on what you want to have in your tank. Just like FW what you want to keep dictates what you will need. There are starter corels and starter fish, low light, high ligh, you name it. I think of corals more like fish than plants, in as much as some species are healthier with complimentry friends, some create more waste than others, and some need special diets. Corals create waste just like fish, and will have different curent needs.
  20. Not sure, would definatly like to know more about the underlying calcs. The small tanks seem weighted. It says 33 Endlers are 100% stock for 15G, and 140 for a 90G (linear would be 200).
  21. That link is fantastic. That get's best link of the month in my book. Seems I am over stocked on Endlers, but no warnings and it looks like it agrees with my water temp and water change selections. If I guess at the unfettered population in the fall I need a new tank! I've been playing with adding differnt fish and most of the warnings seem resonable. I like the level of detail it adds when it does have a warning.
  22. I think I am still pro bump, but I see both sides. I suspect sellers support no bumps as the average price of items goes up, and they tend to be in for the full day anyway. but the auction is long and being able to move items up rather than comeback or stay means you can get others things done. I'm looking foward to seeing how things run in Edmonton. $5 sure limits what I would be willing to bump.
  23. Yeah, thanks a bunch- we love being stuck with unwanted stuff. At least it wasn't alive (that's been done before too.) It's like camping, haul out your own trash. At least the dumpster was not too far away, as sadly the magic pixies that Northranger expected to clean up had the day off.
  24. Ithink I justed talked to S.O. into going, but we will just be buying. May have to go to the inlaws the night before to make the deal work.....
