  1. AAARG! My life is over, i have a training session all weekend that weekend... I may need to get someone to buy stuff for me.... So i can have my cake and eat it too!
  2. The tank it's in has Co2, 39w x2 HoT5, and flourite gravel, im thinking of doing the EI method now once i can source the nutrients.
  3. Hey folks, i finally found myself a bushel of this stuff, i've been half heartedly looking for it for the last few months. now that i have it settling in the tank, i realized i have no idea how to plant it properly so that it grows well in my tank. So if anyone can give me any pointers, it would be much appreciated. here is a pic of the tank it is going into and a pic of the bushel, im planning on planting in the front left of the tank, around the red tiger lotus Thanks for reading, and i hope you enjoy the pics. I'm also looking forward to hearing what your opinions are going to be!
  4. does the male guppy have a few females to harass? i've seen wierder things... like a gay male guppy... i have to say guppies aren't really that high on the fish intelligence scale lol
  5. yeah, like the fish on finding nemo that stresses out about cleanliness ... mental health diseases can affect everyone lol
  6. swordtails and guppies cannot cross breed, they are very different species... swordtails and platies can crossbreed, guppies and endlers can crossbreed as well, but not guppies and swordtails... that would be interwebs misinformation. i'm sorry to rain on your parade
  7. i got mine from pisces many months ago, i regularly just throw away excess, im sure next time i trim, in a month or so... someone could get there hands on it lol
  8. if you google aquatic photography - there are many guides to get started, one you get the basics down... well practice makes perfect! Nice Tank, whats the carpeting plant you have in the front?
  9. Pogostemon stellatus is that plant in the middle to the right of the aquaclear
  10. Hello AA people! My 33 gallon tank has been very active over the summer, I think this is in part due to the many storms we had over the summer. I'd usually complain, but thanks to the changes in barometric pressure, my fish starting spawning like crazy. Considering this is a community tank, i felt very lucky to experience the great variety of species all spawning together. Only problem with so many species spawning, is figuring out what kind of fry i got! So heres some pics of these mystery fry i have. My roomate and I have been debating it over the last few weeks, she reallty wants them to be gardneri killi fry, but i have a feeling they are swordtail fry. So i guess ill let the "experts" decide... whcih would be you guys lol. and of course a mandatory full tank shot. I had problems with black beard algea, blue green algea and green spot algea in this tank. Well im down to just having minor green spot algea so i consider myself pretty lucky, although i had to butcher a lot of plants to get rid of the last bits of it. So keep in mind the plants were all recently trimmed and don't judge me too hard, the tank doesn't look as good as it did a while ago. Im thinking i might have to start adding ferts, although i don't know what i should add. BONUS!!!! As promised, here are some bonus pics! First off we have my American Flagfish fry! I have to say, these fish grow very slowly, i fed them a steady diet of freshly hatched brine shrimp, immunition growth food, microworms and nls growth food and they are still only a quarter inch. So i figured i'd let them free in the tank and let the dumb ones/slow ones get eaten. I had sooo many of them and I only wanted a few. There still seems to be quite a few, but they are very good at hiding. Anywho, enough rambling out of me and heres the pic. I also managed to grab pics of my new n. brevis fry and i have to say they are hard to spot at under 1/8". I was lucky tonight though as two of them were right up near the front glass, making the photo opp very easy. Here is the 10G species tank they are kept in. And finally, I came home today to my angelfish having laid quite a large spawn in plain sight, as if they wanted to show off their spawning abilities, since the sterbai cories put on a two day show last week. Maybe the angels figured it was their turn. and a picture of the pair Heres a tank shot of the 55G community tank they are kept in. Well thanks for reading/watching and let me know what you think! Thanks
  11. lol bribery is fine, its when it turns to blackmail that your in trouble
  12. The mineral content of Alberta water is one of the highest in the country, possibly North America. Salt, aquarium salt, is sodium chloride (NaCl), which is part metal and part chlorine- no minerals there. This ionic compound is not normally natural in fresh water and it's even rarer in South American black water to which oscar evolved in. I am also yet to find any information anywhere as to how the continued use of salt in freshwater tanks is good for a fishes health. And brackish water or esterine water is salt water, but at a lower salinity than marine water. A mineral is a naturally occurring solid chemical substance that is formed through geological processes and that has a characteristic chemical composition, a highly ordered atomic structure, and specific physical properties. By comparison, a rock is an aggregate of minerals and/or mineraloids and does not have a specific chemical composition. Minerals range in composition from pure elements and simple salts to very complex silicates with thousands of known forms. Under this definition I think salt classifies as a mineral. Salt isnt always made with a Sodium ion either. It can be MgCl2 such as what the main composition of the salt in the ocean is. Yes, but are you not confusing mineral salts such as those abundant in Alberta water, and such water as the rift lakes of Africa with sodium chloride aka aquarium salt? The salt used in aquaria as a wide range general tonic is not a mineral salt, but nothing more than one part metal and one part chlorine. Two things that I remove from my tap water using a good water conditioner to prevent my fish from being harmed. don't those water conditioners increase the sodium levels in your water?
  13. That would work!! If not, an angel food cake with money hidden in it will suffice  And fill the hole in the middle with water and some fancy betta? i think the money is supposed to go in the hole lol
  14. Great Thread! Do you mind sharing where you purchased these, unless i missed it :P
  15. Betta Addicts Anonymous how may i help you? Ps. support group meetings are held saturday morning at the sunshine inn restaurant.... you may leave with more fish, but at least youll have emotional support
  16. i had a similar problem with my 55 gallon tank, and i cured it with a power head with the airline attachement... within a day the scum was gone
  17. one thing to note on shop type lighting is that the reflectors are build to spread light to another room, rather than direct it at the floor of a fish tank, so not only will you get some light polution (from light being reflected outside the tank) but you may not get as much direct lighting on the plants as a light unit made for an aquarium. If you do go the shop light (as i have on one of my tanks), you may want to consider replacing the reflectors to ones comparable to aquarium style light assembly, whcih should be fairly inexpensive
  18. american flagfish will eat hair algea, and excel does work, although the tank seems to get worst before it gets better. I have had problems in my tank when i switched from t8 to HOt5 with hair algea... between the flagfish and excel it took about three weeks for the majority of the stuff to go away, and another month or so for the remnants to be cleaned up by the various algea eating snails and plecos i have in my tank. CO2 will work even better than excel, and in the long run will prevent many kinds of algea from reappearing as the plant will be competing for the same source of nutrients as the hair algea
  19. im guessing if you take good care of them they will spawn for you, keeping and raising fry might be an issue though
  20. i have mine spawn and raise the fry up to free swimming every month or 2, i just have them in a properly aquascaped 33 gallons with a temp around 80. It s heavily planted and has high tech lighting and co2. The fry make it to free swimming and usually get eaten up fairly quickly. I would recomend breeding them in a 25g with a couple dither fish to keep the parents on guard and you'd have better success... unless that 120 is a species tank lol.... i think i read somewher that rams come from waters with very few predators so they don't have to develop the extensive parenting skills of other fish
  21. in my ac's i use sponges and bio pellets... when the filter rises, i just rinse the sponge (not the bio pellets) and put it back together... after six months i just replace the sponge as its only really used for mechanical filtration. as many people have indicated, if the cage rises, rinse out the sponge, or replace it depending on how old it is. They are usually under $3 at the LFS
  22. the number one cause of death is birth.... i use extension cords and powers bars as well, i just try to keep it to one extesion/powerbar per socket
  23. shouldn't the eggs be yellow in colour? could it mean they aren't fertilized yet? if the fish are still young, i'd just sit back and be patient. I had a pair of angelfish that took six months to "get it right". Now they spawn very regularly and the babies last in the tank till they are free swimming (at which point the other inhabitants eat them) hope it helps
  24. oh man that would be brutal! I remember the days of travelling from 162nd ave se to the aquarium society meeting by transit (in the days when the train only went to anderson) It was a good 2 hour ride, while driving only took 20 minutes. I wouldn't know what to do without a car anymore llol
  25. ugh - don't remind me, i have to drive from mckenzie town to pretty much the other side of the world to get to pisces or big al's, but on the bright side, i usually make a trip out of it lol
