  1. Thanks RD. I know that every fish is different. I'm just more worried about ones that will not work together at all. Don't really want cross breeding either. I'll be getting quality stock and I don't really want to mess it up if they do decide to breed. I can easily, and will if need be, modify my tank if there are issues. I have rocks in the tank right now, but I am looking to add more since some of the fish I'm looking at can be more aggressive. If the need ever arises I also do have a spare 29 gallon that could be set up in an emergency. And always looking for input. Every fish that someone mentions I read up on if I haven't already, and find lots of pictures to see how they look. I'm fairly new to the African Cichlids but I'm really enjoying it and doing lots of reading. If anyone else has more input keep it coming. It's geatly appreciated. Learn from others mistakes. But like you say, some with will be fine for me whereas with others they weren't. I currently have Piranhas with a variety of fish and really haven't too many issues where others can't keep anything with them.
  2. Than what would you recommend jonnytens? I'd like to keep the Demanosi, Yellows, Petricolas and Plecos. Leleupi and Eureka are changeable. I have the plecos right now and I don't want to get rid of them. And I really enjoy the Petricola.
  3. Are the red zebras not pretty aggressive? And if the eureka are only males without the females that should curve aggression?
  4. Yea I really like the Petricolas also. Very neat. I will for sure get some pictures up when I'm all settled in. So how does this look? Fully stocked? Looks like it'll be great color and nice active fish. 15 Demanosi 5 Electric Yellows 5 Firecracker Leleupi 5 Eureka Red Males 6 Petricolas 2 Albino Longfin Bristlenose Plecos
  5. Just working out my final stocking here. It's a 90 gallon. 48x18x24. Sand substrate with rocks. No shortage of filtration. So what I have planned so far is: 20 Demanosi ? Electric Yellows ? Synodontis Petricola I have 2 Longfin Albino Plecos already ? Other fish And I'd like to add another species. Was looking at acei, red zebra or auratus. I was told that might work. But what would be good. I just want something that isn't blue like the Demanosi and not bright yellow like the Electric Yellows. Similar color with different designs would be fine. Give me some ideas would be great. Thanks in advance
  6. Not all softeners add salt. I have one in my house and it just uses the salt to make a brine which rinses the system. During that rinse I have bypassed/unsoftened water. Which doens't matter because it happens at 2 AM. I'd look into what your system actually does before you worry too much. And I wouldn't say that it's hard water that causes your problems by itself. Probably more to it.

    T5's

Interesting. I've heard otherwise. Was told that the fixtures were good. Other stuff there not so good. We'll see how mine holds up.

    T5's

Check out the aquagiant website. There is one south side edmonton. I just picked up a T5HO for $119. Not bad price I figured. Unless you mean between and not including....
  10. Actually contrary to what most people think, the common pleco is a poor algae eater. It will eat any scraps it can find in the tank. So what yours is doing is normal. They are better algae eaters when they are young. One of the better plecos for algae is the Bristlenose Pleco. It does a much better job keeping the glass clean.

Awesome. Thanks for that. Been looking for something that actually said a certain 2 bulbs were meant to go together for a purpose.

Yep. I'll be picking up some of those too. Want to test a bunch of stuff if I can. See what I end up liking best.

    K. Well I'll try the power glo with the 10000k and see how that looks. I only have space for 2 bulbs in my T5HO

I will for sure try them. But do I get 2 of them? Or should I get one of the 18000 and the other 6700?? I guess the ones that are on the website are the powerglo and life glo. One of each in the fixture?

Where's the best place to get the powerglo bulb? And would I get 2? or just keep the 1 10000k and add 1 powerglo? Actually.. which powerglo..

Ok. And from what I've read and heard. actinic will actually cause more algae growth if left on too long? I guess tomorrow I'll head back to the city and pick up a 6500k or close to wherever I can find it. Thanks for the quick replies jvision.

So just run the 10000k that came with it and pick up a 6500k somewhere. Actinics are more for saltwater then? And actually what wattage should I be running? Or is 54w the only one I can get for T5HO? Sorry, should have read more. 54w seems to be the one for the 48" length. Petsmart edmonton has an 18000k and 6700k. Is 18000 too high?

I just picked up a T5HO fixture for my 90 gallon freshwater tank. Only reason I got the T5HO was because it was so cheap. Now I'm unsure of what bulbs are best to bring out the color in my fish and my rocks. It came with 2 54w 10000k white bulbs so I picked up a Slimpaq 460nm actinic and a 420 actinic to try out. I don't have any live plants as of yet. Most of the fish are african cichlids. Johanni and yellow labs. I want something that will bring the color out nicely without making the water look too white. Also I have some nice red rocks that would be nice if it brought out the color also. Thanks in advance.
  19. Sounds like you need more surface agitation. If they are gasping at the surface then they are short on air. Your fluval output should be at the surface agitating it. Otherwise get a bubbler. The HOBs always doing surface agitation.
  20. a 20gal tank doesn't weigh too much. so almost any kind of stand will do. T.V stand, anything you can sit on. Needs to hold about 200 pounds.
  21. Can they not be found in edmonton? They are also known as buck tooth tetras. Any info would be great.
