  1. Thanks to everyone for their quick responses, and for all your help! I got my hands on some medicine today, and I will be working on weighing it out and treating in the next day or so, Thank you to everyone who helped! I really appreciate it, it's great to have such a quick and helpful community such as Alberta Aquatica to turn to for help! I'm sure my fish will greatly appreciate it, and thank you once again everyone for helping to save my fish Sincerely, Warren
  2. Well what a morning to wake up too, Already this month I lost a tank to Callamanus worms that came from a betta from a LFS, Now my Albino Bichir, and my delhizi Bichir have come down with it, and my cichild tank. It was a hard enough outbreak to see my 3 dollar guppies go down the drain, with my 3 dollar betta, But I've paid anywhere from 20$ onward to 70$ a piece for these fish, I just want to cure them. These worms are almost enough to drive me out of the whole hobby itself. I just need to get my hands on some, if anyone has a website, a way for me to get a hold of some, or anything, I just want to cure my fish. My eels are my favourite animals I've ever had and I just want to save them. I have One 100 gallon tank I need to deworm, and one 50 gallon tank, I'm not risking anymore of these fish to these things...
  3. Kind of filters do you have? I'll just pick you up some media or something
  4. Would you sell me it or something? My poor girlfriend, I just got her into the hobby about 5 months ago, and she's been so keen about taking care of her tank and this outbreak of worms has her destroyed, she feels awful almost to the point of giving up with it, and I'd hate to see that happen simply because she caught something that happens once in a blue moon.
  5. Hey I just recently had an out break of Camallanus worms as well, I was just wondering if anyone here in edmonton would have any of this medication left over that I could purchase, or if im stuck to importing it as well, I only need enough to treat a 10 gallon tank.
  6. A couple months back when I was setting up my 90 gallon, I went upstairs to grab something and told my roommate not to drown while I was away, and to my surprise this is what I saw when I walked in the room haha :P
  7. A picture of Taco my Axolotl He's getting so brave when it comes to feeding time now. I love him haha!
  8. I do like that idea sorta. The only problem I could see is someone seeing a post in said thread, not reading the post fully or properly like a lot of people online do, and bam a rumor is started that said fish store in the post is infested with disease. Ex. You give us all a friendly heads up that the puffers at the LFS have ich in some of the tanks, and to be a little cautious in going forth with them. Great for me cause I read it properly, now Joe blow who reads the post who is watching tv, eatting popcorn and browsing AA haphazardly, skims the article, and registers that "all of the puffers in LFS have ich", tells his friends, warns everyone not to buy puffers from there. I can see it getting a little messy simply from carelessness of the readers, no matter how carefully moderated or written. It's inevitable people just don't take the time to always read or think properly now a day. Though on that note, it did give me quite an idea from your idea. What about a thread on identifying diseases, with pictures, and explanations of common diseases that we all could work on combining every bodies disease experience from the forum, so that we all can see what to look out for. Also another good thread to start would be how to properly go about buying fish in a safe manner, you would not believe how many people I've met while I use to work at a LFS, that are simply crazy when it comes to their purchasing of fish. Ive once had a man with a Super Red Arowana, come in and buy 50 feeders, and upon asking what he planned on doing with them, he gave me the answer "I just dump them in tank with him", no quarantining them, no nothing. A guide to safely buying a fish for all the fish newbies and experts a like! That way we won't have to worry about what's going on in the LFS's cause we all will be able to identify most of what we'd see through reading and learning, and then avoid the tanks our self. "Knowledge is Power" (That's right I quoted Captain Planet :P) This would avoid any legal implications that could arise and wouldn't infringe upon any rules already in place (Not from what I've read). And I'm sure there would be plenty of people willing to help for the better of everyone.
  9. I don't know what's prettier, Mr. Dallas Green's voice, or the Arowanas :P Nice set up!
  10. Kk we'll I mean I guess it wouldn't hurt to get both sizes anyways, he's eventually going to grow up lol. Now to just find a breeder or place where I can get my hands on a black and a gray colour variation, of preferably the same size right now! Thanks for all the help RD
  11. Is the formula sinking or floating, just out of curiosity, cause if it sinks I wonder if I could feed my 6" bichirs as well with it haha.
  12. Is there a brand you recommend at all for the pellets? I'm rather curious to give New Life Spectrum a go, that or a good sinking pellet I could feed him, that'd be on the softer side. A suggestion for both would be great cause I wanna get my african cichilds a nice new food too lol. (Or if RD has a nice suggestion of which NLS would fit both my scenarios, I'm all ears to give the product a go, and you seem to know a rather lot on the food offerings from NLS :P)
  13. Haha that link was the main one I was reading! But I think I might have missed how many I could hold haha. Though 3-4 eh, hmm I guess I'm going to have to starting finding myself a breeder or browsing the LFSs to see what I can come across. Thank you so much
  14. "Question: Can an opinion be defamatory? Answer: No ? but merely labeling a statement as your "opinion" does not make it so. Courts look at whether a reasonable reader or listener could understand the statement as asserting a statement of verifiable fact. (A verifiable fact is one capable of being proven true or false.) This is determined in light of the context of the statement. A few courts have said that statements made in the context of an Internet bulletin board or chat room are highly likely to be opinions or hyperbole, but they do look at the remark in context to see if it's likely to be seen as a true, even if controversial, opinion ("I really hate George Lucas' new movie") rather than an assertion of fact dressed up as an opinion ("It's my opinion that Trinity is the hacker who broke into the IRS database")." Taken from: http://www.chillingeffects.org/defamation/faq.cgi Stating a pet store and saying "I just wouldnt buy a single fish off that dump because I assume that every fish there has this parasite." is asserting a fact in an opinion. "Question: What are the elements of a defamation claim? Answer: The party making a defamation claim (plaintiff) must ordinarily prove four elements: a publication to one other than the person defamed; a false statement of fact; that is understood as a. being of and concerning the plaintiff; and b. tending to harm the reputation of plaintiff. If the plaintiff is a public figure, he or she must also prove actual malice." Taken from: http://www.chillingeffects.org/defamation/faq.cgi Now given the current case, 1. You have already made a publication to at least one other than the person defamed, Myself. 2. It is a false statement of fact, the likely hood every fish in that store has that parasite is unlikely, and therefore the defense of truth is out of the question. 3. Of course it concerns the plaintiff, your bashing his/her store, and it is in intent of harming their store, aka You don't want people to shop there. Which could also constitute Malice if the plaintiff was a public figure. Your lawyer just lost his case, and I the business owner am around 10k richer at least, depending, I could also claim punitive damages, due to the loss of business from your claim. Defamation is more of a risk here then you think, count your lucky stars that you haven't been pounced on yet.
  15. Oh man all I can say is I'm in love. I absolutely adore this little guy, I picked him up for 40$ the other day at one of our LFS here in Edmonton, and I've been smitten ever since. I've been surfing the web pretty vigorously to get as much information on them as possible, and the more I read the more I fall in love haha. Take for instance I just read last night that you can hand feed them, and by today I already have him scurrying to my hand in hopes for food. He's such a little pig lol. Though I must say that I find it extremely interesting that these "fish" are just salamanders that sort of have chosen not to grow up haha, keeping the external gills, the awesome tadpole appearance, and somehow learned to mate before becoming an adult (Where have I heard that before? ). Though in all my searching I have yet to see if I can get a tank mate for him, he will in a month or so be upgraded to a 55 gal., granted he's only 2 inches now, so he has a bit lol. I know not to get fish, as they'll nip at they're gills and legs, and it says that if not given enough room housed with each other they might take a nip at each other. Though personally I feel with a 55 and lots of hiding places they'd be fine together given the room they have to stay apart if they want too. I thought I might just pipe in and see if anyone has any thoughts on the matter! Also if anyone has any previous experience with these lovely guys I'd love to hear whatever you'd like to share! Also I was wondering where I could get myself some soft trout feeding pellets, as they suggest it is good food for my taco (His name, given they're also called Mexican Walking fish, lame I know :P) as they don't have teeth! That and where I could snag myself another one, preferably one of the black ones!
  16. I rather do agree with T Dawg, if I wanted to hear every single vendor review that each and every member had, then I'd join a forum or venue in which to hear it. Not to mention there hasn't been a law course I've taken to date that said slander or libel will generally be taken lightly. In fact you could be held legally responsible, and there would be a good chance you would be, seeming as a review and warning not to shop somewhere is in direct conflict with their establishment. And just for a little nod to our beautiful Canadian legal system, the general lawsuit for defamation starts at around 10k and moves forward from there. That just seems like a lot of money to give KFC a piece of my mind, regardless of how it tastes or what it did to my tummy. Duckie <3 P.S A lot of local pet store employees love to be given a little extra information here and there, specially if you specialize in something. Given its fair not all like to be corrected and some get distraught but try it next time, I use to work at a pet store and when it comes to fish especially, not a lot of the new employees know a lot, fish is probably one of the hardest and steepest learning curves, and with such numerous amounts of bad info out there it's hard for people to learn sometimes. Maybe instead of writing angry reviews, we could help another Albertan out and give them some real good insight into the hobby we all love and support.
  17. Heh it feels good to be in the light finally :P. I had a bicolor peacock, but the poor little guy bit the bullet this morning, what a god awful site it was to see him thrashed around like a trophy by the other fish -.-, Though I do have a sunburst peacock who is live and healthy though. I also have 2 kenyi I rescued, one of them I really love he's a deep dark blue, the other one I just don't want he's a not so attractive faded blue, and it yellowing, not to mention he's too mean lol. Actually that's it right now, I forgot that they ate my electric yellow lol. I am looking for some new fancy colored ones to join the group, I'm just not sure what I want yet, I was debating a purple auratus I saw a one of the pet stores here, or maybe a snow white socolofi, though I'm fairly new to the cichild game and there's so much to choose from haha. Though one thing is for certain, I do want a bigger tank so I can stock a bunch more of these beautiful looking fish lol.
  18. Oh haha I know, I recently had a discussion with a local arro importer (I completely forget his name, he was a nice little asian fellow) and he blew my mind with how much there was to learn about arowanas. He was taking me through scoring procedures, what to look for in a good arowana, signs of bad breeding, feeding. I personally thinks its more complicated then raising a child lol, I wish I wrote a majority of it down haha.
  19. Talking of Zebra plecos you'd sympathise with me knowing I was this close ->| | to getting my hands on a full grown free one... I had a gentleman dismantling a tank and asked me if I wanted some of his fish, which to my surprise there was a zebra in hand! He told me to give him my number and he'd come drop it off the next morning. I went home and set my alarm for the early am, and lone behold while watching my phone for my lovely fish, the call never came. Till I get a voicemail the next day saying he just decided to give it all to a local pet store... I was crushed lol. - I could also see them being banned since 2005, I was reading a book I picked up the other day on catfish, and it said the wild zebra pleco is almost near extinction and that the best bet to finding one is to try and find captive bred.
  20. Hey! I'm new as well but it seems we share a similar endeavour haha, once I can pocket some cash I plan on grabbing myself a nice arowana and some rays as well lol! Its awful I've been scoping out the whole set up for about a year now haha. Ive even been finding breeders and running through reviews, pricing it out when I can barely afford the tank at the moment lol. What kind of set up are you planning on getting? I one day hope to get a 300 gallon going with a nice golden head crossback Arowana, they're so beautiful!
  21. Hey everyone I'm glad to finally be a part of the community and have the ability to post lol. I've been devishly stalking threads and reading like a creeper for the last week, but now I can still stalkerishly creep and reply to all the awesome conversations going on! haha I'm currently located in Edmonton, I've loved fish for quite some time, though in thelast year or two the fever has taken an all time high haha, I'm running a 90 gallon african cichild tank with just juv's at the moment, Im a watch the little suckers grow haha, though I have to start looking for a bigger tank to upgrade them too, I think they deserve more room (And I'd like to have some more of em ). Im also running a 55 with some small bichir eels atm, an albino senegal and an armoured, which would love to be upgraded to the 90 when I get a hold of a bigger tank for the cichilds lol. Oh and lets not forget my two 20 gallon community tanks!~ Im enjoying myself already!
