  1. In my opinion discus do best with a sand bottom and in a well planted tank. The sand acts as a 2 function (biological and denitrator) filter and provides a natural feel for the fish.
  2. Only thing I understood was the rift lake and cichlid info as i've not watched tv in about 10 years. But I went to the link you posted and that looks like a great station.
  3. I have 5 gallon tank with some shrimp, a few kuhli loaches and rabbit snails, The tank is only filtered with java moss and ricca. Two weeks ago I unhooked an air stone that was on it. Today I find dozens of red/brown microscopic bugs hopping all over the surface of the water. Anyone have any idea what they could be?
  4. They are a highly aggressive shoaling fish very closely related to the piranhas. They have huge appetites and should be feed regularly and with meaty foods. If they go unfeed they will fin nip each other and anything else in the tank.
  5. Here is the list! Behold and bedazzled!! http://acuariorosa.com/2011/08/02/the-international-aquatic-plants-layout-contest-2011/
  6. You have to think outside the box sometimes Hello? Hello? Is there someone or something outside this box?
  7. I feel like an idiot for missing that use!
  8. What spieces of fish swims up and down? How do you hydro vac a 15" square undergravel filter (what's that rated for, a 3 gallon? and it's expect to filter a 55g?) 7' down and with a big rock ontop of it and plastic plants buried in the gravel? How do you get the dead fish out from the bottom of the tank? How do you scrub the algae 7' down?
  9. The company that makes this junk and any company that sells it, in my opinion, shouldn't be supported, becuase clearly they know nothing about fish keeping. http://www.indoor-water-fountains.com/waterfalls/product.php?productid=16501&ppc=froogle
  10. I suggest an Eheim 2217 Classic or an Eheim 2226 Professional. Simply, there has never been a better quality or efficant brand of cannister filtration availible. They cost a little more to buy new, but nothing is cheaper to run. Running an Eheim will use less than half the energy of anything else; the media lasts twice as long as any other; they last 3 times longer than any other brand; no other filter biologically filters an aquarium as effiantly as an Eheim and they are made in a democratic society. They are the easiest filter to maintain and get started.Compare the intake strainer alone to everything else and that will give you a good idea of the difference in quality.
  11. I believe it is hard for north americans to obtain such mastery in anything, simply because we are not taught the priciples of art and mastery. It also has a lot to do with our differences in religions. North americas master is a old man with a beard and theirs is Nature.
  12. Canada had 6 applications and the US had 42. Some of these layouts are sick! http://en.iaplc.com/about/gp_works.html
  13. Interesting, i'm not much into breeding, but more into ecology. My hobby is fish collecting and keeping them in species specific tanks. However I have a large group of red belly piranhas that spawn for me, sting rays. two species of shrimp and i'd like to try my hand at breeding a few species of Xingu river plecos. Right now these three stacks of tanks will have rhom piranhas, an mbu puffer, an african lungfish and a grow out tank of Synodontis decorus.

  15. Thank you and if I owned this site, which I won't be, I would pay you the big bucks!
  16. I tried that too, but I was pushed away. Were any of your suggestion looked into? Were up dates made? When did you start this thread? This thread was started 10 months ago and yes, his suggestions were looked into. I personally went through and cleaned up all the pinned topics, fixed broken links and pictures as best I could. Not much else we can do in the buy/sell if people don't post "sold" or "pls archive" in their threads/titles(preferably the description under the titles so we dont' have to open topics dozens of times a day). If its not marked as "sold" we dont' know its finished and then it stays in the B/S until it expires in 60days. If there are any specific issues you want us to try and fix please let us know. We try our best to remedy things but we are only volunteers and can't patrol every thread on the site 24/7. Hijacking topics to discuss a pun under someone's avatar distracts from any points you were trying to make. Look at the very first reply here I made, look at the responce I got, then go and see if it was fixed.
  17. I think in Wingin' it's case the numbers of fish and possibly tank size keep things relatively cool. As you know, African Butterflys are territorial, as well as male Bettas and if the tank is too small there maybe some discrepancy regarding who gets surface space. I could see a butterly taking pot shots at a Betta and a Betta possibly nipping off the extended fin rays of a butterfly.
  18. If you just want a cluster of plant then leave the bunch together, but remove all the fibre from the roots and plant. Target fertilize the roots if you've not already added a substrate fertilizer. If you want the entire bottom or a major portion of the bottom carpeted with 6" tall cripts in a year, then plant them individually, but make sure the tank substrate is properly fertilized.
  19. Getting started. Location The building the first 3 stacks of tanks are going in is very old. I'm setting them up in the basement of this building and the floors are horribly uneven. The location's floor that I've sellected for the tanks is as good as it gets in this building. I will however need to build up a level sub-floor as shimming to level will weaken the rack structure and eventually sag and potentialy cause leaks and cracks in the tanks. The spot I chose has 4 electrical outlets on a 25 amp breaker. I'll be using six seperate fixtures with 2 T5 bulbs over each tank. I want to be able to grow some fast growing stem plants, plus Reccia floatins and java moss. Each tank will be independantly heated with a 200w Jager and all filters will be home made and air driven with The Pump.
  20. We're not business staff, we're volunteers. As for sounding democratic, wasn't meant to be at all. Here's harmless little Sackboy from PS's Little Big Planet: From the really popular game "God of War": And nickame for moderators is "mod", so really it's a very small jump to dressing Sackboy up in that costume. As you're an online gamer, I figured you'd make the leap pretty quickly. My mistake: So "Mod of War" is a humourous play on words. Your intentions seem to be that of intimidation and if I was the owner of this site it wouldn't be permitted. I play one 11 year old Blizzard game online, that's it.
