  1. I have a massive Aponogeton crispus (might actually be a capuroni) plus another smaller one. Very pretty. My angelfish like to snack on ulvaceus Have anyone tried breeding/propagating Aponogetons? It'd be nice if there was a local source. They're always so expensive in stores.
  2. Those bottle traps work great on lots of fish too. Cichlids and betta's especially. Yoyo loaches seem to be strangely immune to them.
  3. Just looks like detrius to me. How much flow do you have in the tank? You probably need more flow around/at your rock.
  4. On the note of local Oto's. Does anybody breed them in Alberta? Are the one's coming from chain stores likely captive bred? I shudder to think that the poor things are wild caught.
  5. I'd recommend swapping the sponge in the nano filter for some bio-media and filter floss. Personally I feel that sponges don't provide a statisfactory amount of surface area for efficient biological filter. Of course since you're just keeping shrimp they don't put out as much waste as fish so its not as big a deal.

    Why Ei?

I don't do EI on my 75 because I'm not comfortable with the thought of using twice the amount of water I'm currently using. Feels wasteful to me, and my roommates would certainly not be impressed. On smaller tanks I'd probably use EI.
  7. I know there's controversy over whether angels and discus can be housed together because they can supposedly vector disease to one another. I have yet to find any legitmately documented cases of this occurring. Unless of course you are referring to possible aggression issues. As stated above I intend to rehome him but I'd like to be sure he is parasite free first. I figured as much. Is there a more effective means of rearing internal parasites? Has anyone had success treating anchor worms with PraziPro? Is there a more effective plant safe treatment I could try?
  8. S/he definitely isn't starving himself. Still eating but none the less skinny. S/he does like to hover infront of next to once of my pieces of driftwood which s/he camoflages in very well with. Doesn't spend time swimming in open water however. I haven't witnessed any overt aggression on the part of the angelfish, they're some what warry of the discus as it is larger than them (this of course doesn't rule out bullying). I am aware of their shoaling nature. I'll pass the fish along to someone with other discus but I'd like to be sure the fish is disease free first.
  9. I recently rescued a Discus who was being kept with a Leporinus. Now before I took him home he was housed away from the Leporinus for three weeks and got some time to grow back his tattered fins. Tattered fins aside he appeared healthy and was eating (had some good pudge on him at this point). I do not know if the discus is wild caught. S/he looks like a Heckel except does not have the two more prominent black stripes. I now have him in my 75 gallon with my four angelfish (yes I know this is a touchy subject for some people). Originally he was doing well, however a week later I noticed my male Nannacara anomala had what appeared to be an anchor worm and was quite thin to boot. I tweezered the worm off (there was only the one attached just a few milimeters posterior to his operculum and I'm pretty sure I got its head) and treated the whole tank with PraziPro (just finished a 7 day treatment yesterday). I'm not 100% sure that the Discus brought the anchor worms in because in retrospect my Nanacara had been hiding for at least a week (I'd been really busy with work and hadn't noticed). The male Nanacara is still hiding and I shoot food in front of him. He'll grab it but spit it out after. Does it take awhile for the fish to bounce back from Anchor worm? The female Nanacara (who had also been hiding but appears/ed healthy and worm-less) is eating but hasn't been out in the open as much as usual (no weight loss on her). The Discus is now displaying black stripes (not super dark ones) but is still eating and has gotten rather skinny (both head and stomach are concave). Is it possible that he has internal parasites that the PraziPro didn't manage to kill? I also lost two green fire tetras however they were some of my juveniles so I'm not sure that its related. All other fish in the tank appear healthy, active and wormless. Water: Ammonia: 0mg/L Nitrite: 0mg/L Nitrate: 10mg/L Temp: 26C (heater placed in front of a canister spray bar). I run two canisters a Jebae 302 and a Cascade 1200. I feed at least twice a day. I use a mix of NLS cichlid, general, and discus formula plus frozen (mysis, bloodworms, and brineshrimp). Edit: Is it possible that my bright lights are stresing the discus. When s/he was originally introduced to the tank my plants were quite tall and provided a lot of shade and then later I pruned the hell out of it. His previous holding tank was also quite dim.
  10. Oh cool, similar to the Casper line of zebra danio used in research: Picture: http://msnbcmedia.msn.com/i/msnbc/Components/Photo_StoryLevel/080206/080206-coslog-seethroughfish-hmed-12p.jpg http://www.carolina.com/product/living+organisms/animals/freshwater+fish/casper+fish%26trade-+basic+observation+kit.do http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/content.php?sid=1534 U of A has a whole bunch of them. They were a bit more reluctant to breed than the rest of the danios.
  11. The brown smudges on the bad in the pictures. Is that blood from the fish? because if it is, they're most definitely suffering from nitirite toxicity (likely amoung other things). Nitrite will oxidzie the iron in the fish's blood rendering it unable to hold oxygen (also turning it brown).
  12. What is it about Edmonton's tap that makes keeping algae at bay so hard?
  13. Since we don't really have an advice or reference library I wasn't super sure where to post this. Gives a through break down of important terms and concepts for lighting in both fresh and salt water. Compares PC (T12,8,5,2's), SHO, VHO, and LEDs lighting. http://americanaquariumproducts.com/Aquarium_Lighting.html
  14. Salt would harm plants would it not? As for shrimp anything with copper in it is out. At the very least you need to bump up the temperature to 28C and gravel vac the hell out of the tank. I would also like to point out natural does not equal nontoxic. Many "natural products" are plenty toxic. In fact botulinum (the most toxic substance known to man) is natural.
  15. I'd be more worried about fertiliers and such than bacteria.
  16. Any idea how much flow I should have going through the skimmer?
  17. I was fortunate enough today to score a free protein skimmer I'm new to salt so I'm not sure of the make nor exactly what parts I need for it. Its missing the pump and I was wondering if any could suggest a good one to plumb on there. Here's a picture: It'll be going on a 29 gallon.
  18. As of yet I'm not running any T5s. Its still a fresh tank with just a T8. I can procure T5s though. How few could I get away with? Edit: I suppose I asking what organisms (live rock, sponges, soft/stony corals, etc) can I get away with having at say ~1watt/gallon, 2watts/gallon, and >3watts gallon.
  19. I've been thinking about converting my 29 gallon to a reef with some inverts (nudibranchs would be stellar). Now I'm a student and therefore rather poor so if I can find a way to do this relatively cheap that would be great. I only have access to tapwater (haven't got around to checking for phosphorous yet). Can I get away with using Sunblaster T5 HOs (the three footers are 39watts?) for lighting? I understand that there are lower light corals. As for filtration: I've got an aquaclear 70 I can mod into a fuge? Annnd live rock/sand (does it matter how coarse the sand is?)? I have friends I can acquire frags from.
  20. So I've had this little fellow for just about 6 months. Nooo idea what he is and he hasn't gotten past 3". Anyone know what he is? Sorry about the poor picture quality. He's hard to get a photo of.
  21. Not an app but might be relevant/interesting: http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/compound-eye/2012/03/12/transform-your-iphone-into-a-microscope-just-add-water/
  22. Surface turbulence can be arranged. I actually just removed a whole load of plant material on Thursday. I've been trying to sell/trade the severum with no luck for a while now.
  23. The CO2 should be going off at night, I have a solenoid. The angels have been in the tank about four months now. As for how long its been going on. I've noticed it on and off for three months. The biggest fish in there is a 4" severum and he doesn't gulp at all. It might be overcrowding. OR Not enough light for the plants.
  24. I do have a CO2 tank but shouldn't it be affecting the other fish in the tank? Its only the angels. If it was hypoxyia the angels should be breathing much harder when in the water colum shouldn't they?
