  1. Its green alge that you can scrape off into sheets. The tank started this days after being moved, all the filters were run here on another tank while we moved everything else then brought over to his place. He also does the stability every week. Ive moved many a tank without a crash or cycle and this is the first time other than a pond i have seen this kind of alge... I made sure his ammonia and nitrate/trites were in order weekly aswell just to make sure his fish wouldnt croak on him. Also the people who live next door to him have a turtle and they boil his water for waterchanges as the alge was also crazy and thats where i first got the idea its from his tap? He lives in goldbar right off the river...
  2. I sold one of my 180 preaditor tanks to a good friend of mine that lives just north of me in the next section of the city... he took a catfish, arowana, 2 big plecos and all the lights and equiptment i had with it. he has 4 foot flourecents on the 180 gallon and they are on for 7 hours a day. The tank is nowhere near a window and everything he is doing or running is the exact same routine and tools i did when it was at my place. He has such bad alge that he has to scrub the drift wood and rocks weekly and change out a bunch more water....? the only thing i can think of seeing as i never had more than a few spots is he gets his water from a diffrent station than i do? Im going to set up a 3 stage carbon filter system and see if i cant fix it that way but really is this possibly the problem? The only time i saw a tank worse that this was in a front window with guppies and only the front glass was viewable becuse of the magnet..... its really bad...
  3. Ok i lied..... 4k in toys and Im just adding salt today Now im looking for large salt fish in the near future if anyone knows please PM me
  4. Odds are its just Low quality koi bought a few years ago..... Look nice at the store till it gets in the daylight and poof.... Big grass karp
  5. I would love to come by with a few wobbly pops and just sit there..... in awe...... are you renting out tank space LOL Will you be doing a journal of how you built all that?
  6. lol i quit with the salt idea after a few weeks of research. the way i keep fish I would have rock and a nurse shark 5k later feel bad and go back to fresh where the monsters need only space
  7. Ive got one in my 300 gallon, Grows about an inch a month and it ate my alligator gar that was 2" longer than him.... They are a super preaditor
  8. Where would a guy find cheap base rock without shipping it?
  9. Yeah the startup dosent look too fun.... 300 lbs of live rock alone.... and Ill have to go metal halides with the 30" depth. The fish are pretty cheap tho Fingers crossed Ive dealt with some locals that are salties so i get to share some beers and pick brians again soon......
  10. Im really excited about it alot of square footage to work with but some of the set ups ive seen are just insane...... small computers running things ect ect And one gent i was talking to about livestock actually laughed at me when I told him how cool it would be to get into sharks..... Just like freshwater monsters.... big empty tank with one big meanie swimming around lol. If i do make the jump Ill have to go reef and stick with the community mentality for sure.
  11. Oh no..... Its Contagious......
  12. Ok so Ive been avoiding even looking in the section like the plauge..... Every time im at the pet store i stomp right through the salt section just like when the wife comes and trys to stop at the kittens.... Were not salt people i say..... life is complicated enough..... But doing exotic freshwater for 15 years plus the question does start to widdle you down lol.... And when i got my 300 set up thats all anyone asked.... Is it salt? will it be salt? blah blah blah.... So now im sitting here... watching youtube videos of how too reefs, seeing all the lion fish, and panther groupers and crazy corals and I feel a little like one more video is going to push me over the edge. I know there is ALOT to do when it comes to salt but for the average freshie how hard is it to make the switch? My 300 has a giant sump with room for a skimmer, I have an RO unit and the tank has been nothing but perfect since the week I filled it as far as PH and ammonia ect Is this a cross over worth doing? lol Is this just evolution and Im trying to fight the current
  13. the ones I did with the princess bits with 1/2 inch glass were good for 4 holes, then you could see the bear steel on the rim and it didnt sound right. I would think the $80 bits may give a few more but for the price Ide stick with an assortment of cheepOs For the chipping inside I was told to buff it or sand it down so there are no stress points that could cause a fracture.
  14. Last ones i did were princess auto bits...... I dont know how you stayed so cool..... Took me 3 rum n cokes to even make the putty pool on my 180 gallons and once that grinding started i had 4-5 min of what felt like me holing a grenade that was about to pop LOL.... < see im laughing about it now
  15. AND.... everyone knows Ivan Drago took a dive in rocky 4.... that should have been the end of rocky right then and there....
  16. Ohh you kids Since ive retired from c*ck fighting (joke) i have a neutral view on this..... It is true that it is bad to make animals fight..... this i agree with but when it comes to fish tanks..... Its a 50/50 that it is what it is.... Way way back i had a pair of oscars that lived fine together and one day i came home and one had zero scales....Toast.... I felt bad but it was an aquarists lesson and I think all preaditor keepers go through this at one time or another and some still try anyways on the off chance it may work out positive... I keep arowanas together.... and thats a big risk as they are super territorial....almost always splitting tails, dropping scales... but the off chance i have a calm community of them is worth the risk to me and many others although it may seem mean to some i guess? My snakehead.... LOL is a solitary fish indeed... but he lives with an asian arowana and catfish, pacu ect and other than the odd whack they all get along fairly well.... Had he killed them all I would feel and look like an a$$ but half this hobby with the preaditors anyways is making it work or learning an expensive lesson. Thats my 2 bits anyways
  17. like in the river or to buy? I havent seen any for sale in a loooong time..... And i wouldnt post where i caught any online or that part of the river would be swarming with people till there were none left
  18. Seems like your more ahead then most of the fly keepers LOL. if you have any questions just PM me
  19. The most important thing with fly rivers is that the water is really clean..... and that there isnt anything sharp for them to bump into. They are notorious for skin infections that lead to bacteria and internal problems. They love kiwi and lettuce on a clip and there is a huge variety of foods they can have but try to keep water quality in mind as fruits will make it go sour pretty quick.
  20. The ERAS and TARAS forums are both good sites other than that it would be MFK or here ide say. What kind of into are you looking for specificaly? Ive kept them more than once....
  21. Ive got 3 up for grabs Im just saying...... edmonton is flodded right now if your still lookin
