  1. Was a 33 gallon that I bought used (Won't be doing that again...) about a year ago Wasnt a fun clean, but minimum water damage. Used a shop vac, towels and about 5 days of heavy duty fans!
  2. Thought i'd share this experience, as i was pretty suprised... My girlfriend and I woke up sunday morning, she went out to the hallway before i heard her call me. I got up, and walked out to the hallway, and could hear a grinding noise..the noise of filters gone dry.. walked into the storage room, the floor was soaking wet, and the tank was empty. Not a half inch of water. Many dead fish (very upset at this time)...before my girlfriend notices that one my shellies is still breathing. She managed to lay sideways in water just to cover the side of her mouth and gills, and managed to survive.... Got her into a 5 gallon bucket and some water from the tap. I quickly went through the rest of the tank, tearing apart all the rocks looking for any other survivors..No luck, except one Pleco, who managed to survive without any water over him, but crammed into a corner and still moist.. Got him into the 5 gallon, and then moved them to my mom's place...so far, so good...Lost all of my other shellies (3 of them), a mating pair of Julies, more julie fry then i could count (including a few that were getting near adult size) and 2 Comps...They were pretty lucky. Thought i'd share my story, pretty amazing that I had two survive considering how the tank broke (bottom some how managed to disconnect from the side..would have drained extremely fast)....Felt pretty terrible about the loss of the others, I had some pretty good tank harmony for the last 6 months
  3. I have Brevis living along with Comps, Marlieri, Danios and Dwarf Rainbows. Willing to sell one of my Alto. Comps if you want it, he's just a bit out of place. 1.5-2"
  4. Dwarf Gouramis are quite nice, and definitly stick out
  5. Im gonna bump this just as i didnt get many replies...anyone have an opinion?
  6. That's what I figured, I had 2 danios in there the whole time and neither got a speck, if it's not ich I'd like to give this guy his decorations back and cool the tank a bit. though he's done ok for it for now...
  7. Have had this Gourami for around 6 months, and he had what i assumed was an outbreak of Ich. I thought i had it managed as it disappeared, but then had to leave the tank at my parents as i was out of the country. When i got back, this small dot was on his bottom fin (hopefully you can see in the photos). I was back on the 9th. I've had the tank temperature at around 86-87 degrees for 10ish days, and havent seen a thing. I also had the tank at a pretty high temperature at my parents just in case, but it didnt help. Is this Ich, or just a spot? I've been dosing with Ich Guard as well, and again no progress. Have been doing 25% water changes every couple of days, removed all decorations & gravel except the treasure chest to give him somewhere to hide.
  8. Looking for some tips on a good dither selection for my tank (36"x12x18). Looked at danios but disappointed by the LFS's stock. Not many look too healthy so didn't get any. Would love a good school with some great color. Have 4 Brevis and 2 Alto Lamps In it right now Thanks!
  9. Looking for some friendly color in my tank, are their any stores in Calgary that carry Julidochromis Ornatus. Was at Big Al's today but didn't see any. Thanks
  10. Hi guys, I currently have my small fish tank at my parents, and have been seeding the foam filter for my new 33 gallon in that tanks filter for the last 2 weeks while I'm on Vacation. While I've been gone my dwarf gourami has gotten Ich, and my mom has bumped the temperature and been using "ich stop". I've had luck with this stuff before getting rid of it. My real concern is wether i'm gonna have a problem with the seeded foam transferring ich to a non-occupied tank. Also going to use the biomax from my small tank. Thanks again for all the help with all my questions
  11. Can I ask how much you paid on Kijiji for it? I have a sudden case of multi-tank-itus lol. Just wanna get a scope on what id be paying for SW
  12. I'll take a look on Monday. Gonna have a busy day running around to all the aquarium places. If I chose to go with a fish for the cycle (which should be a quick one with all of my seeded stuff), which of my list or subsitituted list would be ok? Or should I get some Danios (as they'll bring out the rock dwellers later on from what I've heard). Also, which test kits would you guys recommend, and I assume Golds has them cheapest? Thanks again guys, tons of helpful info. Much easier then hours and hours on google
  13. Can't afford wild. I'll look around town, send me a pm if you get any in the future. Thanks.
  14. Anywhere in town that has shells cheap? Gonna check out Michaels when I get a chance unless any other ideas.
  15. Do you have any - julidochromis ornatus -Orange leluipi - hecqui or Occelatus - Paracyprichromis Thanks
  16. Does anyone know where to find some of the following around Calgary? - J Ornatus -Orange leleupi - hecqui -Occelatus - Paracyprichromis Thanks!
  17. Thanks for the help. Gonna spend a bunch of time at Big ALs and Golds on Monday to see what interests me.
  18. Thanks, will take a look. Does anyone have any other ideas for a small Brightly colored tang that'll work (and where to find in/around Calgs). I picked the Leleupi due to it's nice color and most have info on it says theyre unaggressive but all the forums say otherwise. Thanks again
  19. My light strip has a bit of a humming noise. The bulb is a little dark at each end, so I assume it's close to burning out. Would this cause the hum?
  20. Thanks. I figure with the powerhead at 240 gph and the filter going at 300(which I doubt) I should have a good turnover but not knocking the fish against the far glass.
  21. Thanks for the help guys, Is there anywhere I can get hecqui in Calgary? Will consider a fishless cycle but having an empty tank has been bugging me! If I was going to do the fishless, what product would you suggest for the ammonia and where can I find it? Thanks again

    Rookie!

Hi I'm Brent. New to Cichlids but not aquariums. Thanks for all the advice!
  23. I am running a Aquaclear 70 on my 33 gallon, it says it has a 300 gph flow but I highly doubt it with the amount of flow, so I added a nano powerhead. Do cichlids like a bit of flow? Thanks again
  24. Hi, im new to posting on this forum, but have been using it extensively in my research, but i figure this might be easier then searching for a few weeks. Have a new 33 gallon long (36" long) tank setup, that is waiting for its cycling to start (im away on Vacation, so have water running but no bioload). I do have the foam insert of my new filter running in a filter on my smaller tank for 2 weeks, and will use the "Biomax" from my other filter as well when i get back to get the cycle ahead of schedule. So i have a few questions regarding a stocking list (i'd rather have a pair or a couple of each species, versus a specie specific tank). I understand that i may be a little ambitious with my list, but i am more concerned with compatibility than size of my tank. - J Transcriptus or Julidochromis ornatus or dickfeldi - Orange leleupi -Altolamprologus calvus - Neo. Multi - Cyprichromis leptosoma From what i've seen at my LFS, most of these are available (though the Multis might be a little tough to get). Also, would the Leleupi be a good choice to cycle with? I had my tank setup prior to my vacation but didnt want to get fish in it to ditch them, so have no interest in doing the Fishless cycle, as it's been empty for about a month. One other question, does anyone buy fish off of Kijiji/Craigslist with decent luck? Thanks for all the help! Brent
