  1. +1..... Miss having a group of these guys
  2. A really cheap way is to buy the plastic scrub pads from any dollar store. I think there like 6 for a buck
  3. Haha to funny, my wife thinks I should have just married my fish. Well if it were possible lol. Ive tried option B, and mmmm it was more than just 1 night on the couch hahaha. Im thinkin about gettin some shellies for my tank. But maybe ill go with your first option. The whole wine and dine then dishes idea sounds like it just might work this time..... I hope
  4. I guess hugh you could do what feels right for ya to if its looking darker give it a turn. Or just let your mts take care of it for ya
  5. Totally agree with different lights. I did them again next couple days id bring them upstairs for natural day light anf there good. Haha as soon as I go downstairs tho to my 80's retro lights its a different story. More orange for sure and well by this time its way past the 5 min mark when I go downstairs.
  6. If you did reduce it to around an inch then I think you would for sure be safe. Then again im not sure its necessary either. You have mts naturally aerating your sand bed. Just trying to save you the work. Im pretty sure other members on here have a fairly thick bed aswell. im guessing you have a tropical tank and not cichlids, cause you have mts. Only asking cause I had geos that used to dig a ton and hit pockets and im sure thats how I lost some of my rams. Hence why I thinned mine down.
  7. Hey hugh, Id say your safe from gas pockets with all the mts snails in your tank. Just from my experience having white sand yiu will see it turning a black color. This is just caused by the deeper sand bed not getting fresh oxygenated water. I used to churn my sand bed every two weeks. And that got old quick so I thinned my bed down to an inch maybe less. Again I didnt have mts and a few of my plants did died off. aswell the roots turned black like the sand You having play sand and mts snails you more than likely will not see much color change. The snails will naturally allow fresh oxygenated water through your sand bed and allow plants to thrive aswell. IMO I dont think you have anything to worry about. Again it is just my experience, and I know that hydrogen sulphide is a type of gas created in the sand by not having enough oxygenated water go through it. When I churned my sand bed I used to get the "rotten egg smell". And yes it is toxic to fish.... I learnt that the hard way. Jeff
  8. Perfect thanks fly ill definately start them during the day in sunlight. As im sure my 80's age light in my basement wasnt helping. Lol thanks again Jeff
  9. Hey everyone long time no forum for me. Good to be back and good to see a bunch of new users on the site:D Well I finally got one.... Took me 4 years but I thought id try it out and be more responsible so to speak So I am cycling a 33 gal right now, has been going for about 2 1/2 weeks maybe 3. Anyway I read the booklet and proceeded to test. My questions were related to nitrite and nitrate test I let them sit for their 5 minutes nitrite read 0ppm amd nitrate was on the fence between 10 and 20 ppm. As I was doing ph and ammonia the nitrate changed to 160 ppm. This was at the 12 minute mark. Nitrite stayed the same. did it again with same results. So do I read it at 5 mins and call it a day? Lol oh and quickly my ph read 7.6 which is normal for around here but the test was a darker blue than on the reference card. So I did high range ph and it looked like it was between 7.8 and 8. Any help would be great! Jeff
  10. Hey all have some more pics. Sprucegrove sent me a bunch last night as his iPad is being goofy. single T5ho sunblaster as a light source Group shot Romane lettuces in aero garden as a size comparison Leaf growth
  11. For anyone who is interested got a photo via fatpuffer last night. Has some leafing action happening Thanks again fatpuffer!!
  12. Wrong pic or not. It looks wicked, love planted tanks. Nice job!
  13. Sprucegrove that sucks man, at least all your tanks have a little extra filtration As for having them in freshwater I'm pretty sure you can. Sprucegrove had a bunch of links to read and I read more myself. I don't know if they need Any addiditives to have them in F.W I don't think so. I've seen them before at big als for 25 bucks each I asked if they get them in frequently and they said no not to often. There pretty cool looking in general and have big benefits in aquariums. I'm hoping to throw some in my future sump set up.
  14. I started this thread because I really like the look of mangroves in aquariums.... And you tube just wasn't doin it for me. Well the real reason is I'm jelous I don't have a set up to have any lol So all you members who got some a while back show em off if you wouldnt mind
  15. I had sorta the same thing happen to me... There are many factors that will effect your fish I ran my 60 gal for 2 weeks with no filter at all, I was keeping German rams at the time and had no deaths during that time. It all depends on your bioload If your overstocked I would try and get some filtration on your tank as soon as you can. Or check your water and do a water change if anything gets to high... Nitrates etc. If your tank is planted that will help to some extent aswell just depends what you have in your tank. If it will be longer than a couple days to a week? You will have to somehow keep your bio in the filter alive. Maybe someone else can help there. Only sayin that because mine smelt like rotten eggs so it built up anaerobic gases over time( my bad lesson learned tho) again just telling you what I did:) take what you'd like from my speal:) someone here that knows more will help out.... Jeff
  16. Hey just browsing through kijiji Calgary it's a RO unit for sale. Not sure if your going that way or if it's still availiable. Just figured if you were it might be a good deal??? Ad ID 374413863
  17. Really any south american cichlid with moderate aggression I would say. Severums, geos, firemouths, fetivums, maybe angels? depends what you have for a set up you might even get away with dwarf cichlids in their( I've seen it before but have no experience mixing the two) I have 3 Nicaragua cichlids that would probably work in there. Free if you want them. I'm shutting down my tank and selling everything to hopefully buy something bigger:)
  18. I agree smaller fish you have to be carefull with. I'll give you a couple tips that may help you out. I bought my meds at Walmart jungle Ich guard, its like $4.50 and one bottle treats 60 gal.It was cheaper for me to get it there than drive to Calgary and get some from lfs. Problem is it stains your silicone blue. I have notice tho that the color fades away and now I barely notice it. As for treatment I never raised my temp only because I had small fish and the medication takes oxygen from the water. I kept mine at 81. Be sure to have lots of aeration if you don't have access to more air pumps and stones lower your water level a little if you have a HOB filter. Or raise your spray bar from your canister and point it into the water so it makes lots of noise. Lol Now your going to want to add your medication and every 24 hours siphon your substrate like you would if you were cleaning it and add the Medication when your done. and repeat this till you see no more spots. Continue your treatment for about 3 days after the spots have cleared. And when your done do another big water change. This is probably not neccassary but I watch my fish alot and when I noticed that they went from lots of spots to hardly any that day I syphoned longer and did a much bigger water change that day. Just to get more of the parasite out of the tank. I only started Doing this because( pretty sure harold mentioned it to)The Ich lately has been spreading like wild fire and wiping out tanks much quicker and becoming immune to certain medications. Sorry If I rambled on,Hopefully you don't loose any or very few fish Good luck Jeff
  19. Hey yea it is an odd size it's 5 long by 1 foot wide and 29 tall. I'm thinking I should be ok with a 33 gal sump underneath and stand. I figured from the bottom of the stand to top of tank to be between 54 and 56 inches. Im hoping to be closer to 54 as that's the height of my armpit. Any taller and I might have difficulty without a stool lol
  20. Hey James it all made perfect sense to me. I'll get a pic off you later on how to attach the 4" PVC to the bulk head on the overflow. I've still got a coupe weeks of work on my basement before i get things rolling on this. Jeff
  21. I never thought about water evaporation a 15 gal would definately not be enough. I should go as big as I can tho. James that's pretty much the exact setup that I'd like to have. How did you work your overflow for the sump? Any ideas? I'm thinking a PVC pipe and cover it in mosses but not sure what would look the best. I'll have a few things to really think about my 90 is 29 inches tall and like you I'd rather not stand on a stool to do anything. Maybe not as tall of a sump would work. Thanks for the thread and knowledge. Im sure I'll have lots more questions as I work things out. Jeff
  22. Hey everyone just seeking info on sumps. I know pretty much nothing about them lol. I got a drilled 90 gal. It's drilled in the bottom of the tank and the guy had a Modular system pack on it. But that broke in half when he went to unscrew the top off one to show me. So I have a 10 and 15 gal availiable to make into a sump but not sure if that is big enough? I'm planning on using the 90 as a planted freshwater and just having the sump as my filter with ceramic rings and the bio balls. Kinda have it set up as a canister just on its side. Like I said I don't know anything about this sort of thing or if I can even use it like I'm intending. Any help, tips, concerns would help tons as this is a learning process for me
  23. That's wicked, congrats on both. Same question as vince0 are you softening their water?
  24. I have seen it a little while ago now. Very cool hour of t.v I thought.
  25. Hey ckmullin, Just had a question where do you find these nice rocks in k country. Just wondering because a buddy and me are going to go up in the next week or so to train. It'd be sweet if I could bring a couple back. That is if it's not covered in snow lol
