  1. So, my Dad thought we should put wheels on my metal frame for my 180 gallon, so we can move it easily if the need arises. I don't know what kind of wheels he was thinking, but I thought it might be a bad idea. I thought there's no way the wheels could support the weight of the tank, which will easily surpass 2000 lbs with rock, water, 55 gallon sump etc. Say we built a bed out of wood, and put a LOT of wheels on it to distribute the weight amongst many wheels. Would it be dangerous to even move the tank at all like this? I thought the water sloshing around while wheeling it somewhere would cause stress on the seams of the tank itself. What do you guys think? It would certainly be handy to be able to move the tank if need be. But once it's full, it's pretty much there forever. -Hideo
  2. http://albertaaquatica.com/index.php?showtopic=1403 and http://albertaaquatica.com/index.php?showtopic=7311 I believe his backround is truly black, though he may have done some touching up in photoshop. Nothing major, just standard stuff at most I'd guess. -Hideo
  3. Well, that's kind of difficult. If you purchased it at Petland or some other large, over-priced chain, it's probably expensive. Many people get their stands made, or buy seperately from a more reasonable priced place. My 55 gallon setup including everything new cost me 350$, but my 180, stand, tank (with oveflow and drilled), lights, glass lids, 55 gallon sump, pump, substrate and decorations (rock/driftwood) has so far cost me about 1200$ all together. Stand is metal, however. -Hideo
  4. Regardless, he'll still be saving 7% regardless not having to pay PST. -Hideo
  5. You are aware that the GST is not being "removed," it's only being "reduced," from 7% to 6%, effective July 1. How does this net an 8% savings? Do the math. He said 7% gst and 7% pst, thus, buying in Calgary, would not be paying PST, hence saving at least 7%, or 8% as the gst will be at 6% anywhere but Calgary. From what I gathered from the news, Calgary's going to add a city tax of 1%, and keep the tax at 7% and use that extra 1% for I have no idea what. -Hideo
  6. Whatever the price, if you wait until after the long weekend it'll be minus 8% anywhere but Calgary. I think the city is adding 1% tax to fund everything but public schools. -Hideo
  7. There were pajama fish last night on a show about the most poisonous sea creatures, living in a brackish lake with jellyfish that can't sting. I always thought they were pure saltwater! -Hideo
  8. Does it look nicer than Target Playsand? -Hideo
  9. I haven't yet hit a year. Its been about 7 months or so. I started with a 55 gallon, and now have 15 tanks. To be fair though, not all of them are currently in use. 5 aren't currently even filled with water, and probably won't be for a while. My fish haven't really changed, much, I suppose. I'll let ya know next november ;-) -Hideo
  10. Or a nice community of beautiful female bettas from http://deemarkbettacanada.com as they are having a big sale right now. Picked up 4, myself. Picking them up tomorrow! -Hideo
  11. Nothing can kill a Danio. I keep a school of danios loose in a bowl, without water, they're still going strong after 7 months. -Hideo
  12. I dare say some of the best Cichlids in Canada. -Hideo
  13. Actually, I'll make a note on Christian's statement about going to Gold's all the time. I no longer go because I have no space. I think I've only managed to go there 2 times so far and not leave without fish I didn't plan to buy. The only cure, is abstinence. And, and suggestions for stores to hit, my only suggestion is Gold's. Since you more than likely have all the big chains where you are, you could however, check out some other stores. Pisces has a large plant selection, and Imperial Aquariums, Wai's Aquariums and Franco's Aquariums are others that come to mind that are independant. There may be more I can't think of. Oh, definately don't miss out on the Marlborough Walmart selection. If you're looking for ich, definately swing by. -Hideo
  14. There are many more stores in Edmonton than Big Als, I'd suggest checking out the store locator thread, and calling all of them to get a price on those fish you want to sell. You might have more luck at a smaller, non-franchise store. Big Als being a franchise, has certain rules on pricing and things like that they follow. A smaller place might also have set rules for themselves, but will be more willing to break their own rules in ertain situations. Build up rapport with a small business, and they generally tend to take care of you. -Hideo
  15. From experience, if the fry is small enough, yes. I had an SAE that ate my danio fry, but never touched my guppy fry. I think they may have thought it was planaria, or something else they might like. -Hideo
  16. I've thought about it. People seem to have success with it. There's group mail orders here every time to time. I don't know why I haven't done it, because there's online sites with the fish I want I can never find in town. -Hideo
  17. I fill my rain barrel with tank water. I now just use my python-type vac, bring it outside, rest it into the intake of the rain barrel after syphoning, and away I go. The grass and plants grow like I've never seen. -Hideo
  18. It could be! In approx 6 weeks though, as I broke my foot. But if you guys want some photos of new fish for whatever use, I'd be happy to do it for free. When I'm done school in 2 years, I'm hoping to have a lot of volunteer work on my resume in regards to photographic stuff. -Hideo
  19. You guys should find a photographer who'll take photos of the fish everytime them come in to post on the website or something. For free, of course. -Hideo
  20. Your little fish is becoming a man. -Hideo
  21. Don't laugh...some yutz just reclassified a bichir species as P. mokelembembe...I hope to god the taxonomists change it or fail to accept it, even those I am a longterm amateur cryptozoologist....something kingkongi cannot be far behind. Why what does mokelembembe mean? It's like that stupid guy who discovered... it might have been an enzyme... I don't remember but it has something to do with fetal development. Anyways he named it Sonic Hedgehog because that's his favorite video game (geek). So I was trying to read this book and it was all "then Sonic Hedgehog does this..." and I was like that is it, this guy is never allowed to name anything again. If I discovered a new species of stingray I'd name it after Lyder... just add some fancy suffix :P because he's ray crazy. Essentially Mokele-mbembe is the African Loch Ness monster. It's supposed to be a Sauropod (or close to one) that is supposed to possibly be living in the Likuola swamp in the Republic of Congo. It's HUGE, as big as a state, and is largely unexplored (something high like 75%). Also, I love Sonic the Hedgehog. I wouldn't mind if, but you have to name it properly and make it SOUND like a scientific name. -Hideo
  22. I had those, not sure how they got there, but my fish ate them, so I didn't get rid of them. Now there's none left. I think it may have been a stray piece of food or something that hung around on the lip of the tank or something that rotted. -Hideo
  23. I'd name it after George Harrison of the Beatles, as he was left out when 2 paleontologists named 3 fossils Avalanchurus lennoni, Avalanchurus starri, and Struszia mccartneyi. Unbelievable that they chose Ringo instead of Harrison. Or, I'd name it something based on its personality. -Hideo
  24. That's sort of like what I envisioned for my "dream" company. On the third floor of my large building, would be an office type area for all my various companies, and there would be long aquariums seperating cubicles from front to back. -Hideo
