  1. Yup, it was $131 to buy the tank and have it filled, then you just exchange them after that.
  2. I got my solenoid valve in this week Yippee!!! Just a quick trip to get a power cord and everything can be assembled, this is definitely happening this weekend. I was calling around yesterday inquiring about tanks and refills... I did read most of the posts on here before starting. But it really looks like oxypro is the only one that would even look at a 5lb tank. Or at least they're the only ones that actually gave me a price. $131 with first fill then $17.75 for refills.
  3. Hey!! I'm building mine right now! My solenoid just came in this week. I have to do an update lol.
  4. I have a shrimp tank with a little bit too much light, not much surface agitation. Perfect for some kind of floater. What should I get and why? Preferably not duckweed, at least not the small stuff. Something with short roots hopefully so it's not all over and reaching to the bottom.
  5. If your parameters are out of wack... you added a bunch of fish to a different tank. Perhaps your biofilter was not equipped to handle to new load? Might be why you're seeing the ammonia and nitrite. That's my first thought.
  6. It's only a three gallon, so it's pretty small.
  7. Thanks for the tips! I'm undecided on what to put in it, NOT A BETTA. I've already got a planted betta tank and it's kind of boring. I was thinking of dwarf cories but it will depend on how many plants I stuff into this thing. I was thinking maybe scarlet badis but I'm all about low maintenance fish, finicky eaters doesn't sound like something I want.
  8. I got bored yesterday and had a few things kicking around... Now I have another box filled with water! I've never had rimless before, do you have to keep it filled right to the brim to avoid a hard water line? The background is an experiment, I usually go black. It's very cheery though, makes me want to be on a beach.
  9. Open top tank? One of my tanks is sitting in just the right spot to get an abundance of 'stuff' falling into it. Or perhaps it is little bitty creepy crawlies in the water?

    DIY Aquaponics

Tomatoes love heat! If they get too cold they'll stop flowering. If they are warm enough they'll keep producing fruit at the expense of the plant. You'll see this when the leaves begin to curl or turn other colors besides green.
  11. I think if you're going to keep an underwater ecosystem in a tank you need to be prepared to deal with/accept the less desirable parts that come with it. Snails happen, for a reason. When I start a new tank I intentionally transfer pond snails in. The population explodes for a while, eggs everywhere, then 4-6 weeks later things level out. They clean places I can't get, eat stuff fish won't. Tearing a tank down and nuking everything in it sounds mighty drastic to me. Learn to manage the tank and accept what is in it.
  12. Does your Sag do this? The runners are above the sand and then the plantlet has to root into the substrate from above. PITA.
  13. I was kind of thinking that about the Danio's, thanks. So, has anyone seen the other three species around town anywhere? Or I could wait for a group order. Would be nice to see some in person though.
  14. I'm trying to decide which fish to get. I have a 10 gallon planted cherry shrimp tank. I wasn't really sure about putting fish in but there are so many other things living in there besides the shrimp I think I want some predation! I've narrowed it down to: Boraras brigittae Microdevario kubotai Danio choprae (last choice I think) feather fin rainbow Wondering what other shrimp keepers think, as well as availability of these.
  15. I have hydra in a planted tank, I want it gone. This is my shrimp tank and the hydra have to leave. How can I get fenbendazole. I've been searching the forum and its kind of inconclusive about how to get some. Any suggestions?
  16. I don't know that I'm 'saving' anything by building my own system. I have a greater knowlegde than when I started, and possibly better quality parts than if I were to buy something like the Milwaukee. I also have a little bit more pride in something I've built and researched myself. I also started with a free regulator, so that's what got me started. If I didn't start with that I may gave gone for something like that Milwaukee system.
  17. The guy at Barben called back this morning and found exactly what I want, only problem is it will take 4-6 weeks to get here. Oh well, there still isn't anything on ebay so I figure I'm ahead. And even with all the reading he still stumped me. "What size orifice?" Duh.... I went medium lol.
  18. This is the reason I have stayed away from and gone with other heaters. This is also confusing, because ALL of my fully submersible heaters have 'minimum' water lines on them.
  19. Swagelok - Edmonton valve and fitting, southside. Burkert - Barben industries, Argyll road. I told them what I wanted but I haven't heard back yet. I got my meter valve off ebay, pretty cheap considering. Where/what did you get for a solenoid?
  20. I got all my fittings today!!! Useful things I have learned in this process: There is a swagelok dealer here in Edmonton! There is a Burkert distributor in Edmonton too! I haven't heard back from them yet about a 6011A. No kidding! Several times on ebay I thought I had exactly what I wanted, but no... All I can say is thank goodness I've taken this slow and done a buttload of research and reading. That way the guys at Swagelok and Burkert don't think I'm an idiot lol!
  21. Fully subsmersible, put the whole thing under water.
  22. This isn't Edmonton, but there is a guy on ebay that is selling lots of driftwood, and it's pretty cheap. He's in BC so shipping was actually reasonable. The only problem is you'd have to assemble your own 'custom driftwood piece.'
  23. If your looking for something with a high CEC and on the cheap - Opti-sorb. It's montmorillonite (diatomaceous earth), google it or search it on plantedtank. I got a bag at acklands-grainger for $11 I think. You'll want to cap it with something though. Oh, Americans call it Safe-T-sorb.
