  1. The advantage of big is stability, but that stability is killer when you have things going south. Nitrates spiking? have fun doing PWCs on the 90G to bring that down. On a nano you could could do two 6G changes and you'd be home free... but with that you also get way bigger salinity swings due to evaporation and it can crash pretty dang fast. I'll be honest that I learned a lot from canreef by reading all the "My tank crashed and I don't know why" threads.
  2. What is the 45 got in it now? FOWLR? Sand? Skimmer? Fish? Coral? What kind of lights? Depending on the coral, the lights may or may not have enough punch to reach the bottom of the 90G. The rest is probably just a simple move to the new tank.
  3. I'm going to check out Prince's Island today as well.
  4. I think I saw the trees. They still had the serrated leaves, but I couldn't find any cones. I went west along the path the kids got tired so I'll have to wait until next time and try heading east instead.
  5. Awesome. I've been wanting to give alder cones a try but have a lot of Indian Almond Leaves and couldn't justify going to buy cones Maybe tomorrow will be a day to go walk!
  6. Elk Island Park is just 30 minutes east of downtown Edmonton. <sigh>
  7. What are your levels now and what are your targets?
  8. And.... Where might she have been collecting?
  9. Black Alder (Alnus glutinosa "Imperialis") is European. Green Alder (Alnus viridis) and the Grey Alder (Alnus incana) are the native species. This is a distribution map for the green and for grey but it only tells us that some places in Alberta have it. It doesn't tell us the exact sites they sampled though you can kind of guess. In general it doesn't look like neither Calgary nor Edmonon areas are very good places for finding alders in the wild. Urban planting is a different story I'm sure. Gonna have to grow one maybe
  10. Huh. interesting. I'm going to have to do some research and keep my eyes open while out and about. I don't suppose Prince's Island Park has any eh? That would be too convenient.
  11. We have alders in calgary and/or edmonton?
  12. Hah! I see it now. In the pic it just happens to be reflecting the white T5HO tube
  13. Did those come with the silver reflectors?
  14. Oh... another option is: http://www.ebay.com/itm/281152997738 They come in grow versions that have red mixed with white and also ones that have actinic blue mixed with white. I have the cool white ones and really like the look of them in the tank.
  15. This is a close up. and this is farther: I have two 48" Finnex Fuge Ray over a few tanks and they seem to grow algae just fine HC slowly even with the lights 12" from the water. You are running tanks probably a bit deeper than my little 10 gallons. I'm betting the RAY II would do okay but like you said, 2x 36" is 300.00. Way more expensive than the Sunblasters. BTW those clips work really nice. Just screw them in and the fixture snaps in really tight.
  16. I'm gonna go and say that sunblaster t5ho are pretty cheap, but for a bit more you could go Finnex. That being said, let me dig up a pic for you
  17. What temp does your tank sit at? It isn't the problem of having "cool" water usually, but swings in temperature from night to day that really really stresses out shrimps.
  18. ckmullin has a lot of drift wood I think.
  19. More of a nature aquarium. Some pretty good plants. I'm feeling that you could have used a more dynamic scape by doing a much more sloped design from back to front. Not much you can do about that now short of restarting... again. Maybe more substantial drift wood to make that a central feature/focus?
  20. Did you do anything to green up the UG? I see a shrimp on the left glass. What is it? He looks a bit lonely.
  21. Just a thought, is that direct window sunlight you are getting in that pic? If that is you final tank placement, you might be battling algae for as long as you have the tank there. If you have a choice, an alternate location that doesn't get direct sunlight would be easier to manage.
