it's pretty normal for a male to guard his hard efforts of building a bubble nest in hopes of attracting a female. My old male betta Fin used to, chase his cory tank mates away from his whenever he built a nest!

Hey Fishclubgirl! I'll PM you, I'm not 100% sure what I want, you know how I roll, if they catch my eye either in picture or in person & scream "I belong with you", they come home with me! I don't care if they are "runts", dwarfs, show quality, or just your average pet store betta in a cup!

I am finally done grieving the loss of our old boy Fin (he passed away about 6 mths ago). I will be setting up my own home office within the next mth & have decided my tetra cube tank that has been in storage I want to set up on my desk. I am ready for another male; but not a veiltail. I want something "showy/flashy" but hearty. Suggestions? anyone in Calgary area got some for sale? This is 1 of my old old boys I'd like something like this again!

& 9 outta 10 times I have found my fish are a highlite! Especially my idiot goldfish who are dead set on proving which of the 6 is the stupidest! LOL

My Clown Pleco has choosen tonight to grace me with a rare display! Despite being sure it never eats it is bigger than when I got him/her! I would say 1/4" bigger lengthwise in the past 2+months since bringing it home from Pisces barely the length of my pinky finger!

Ooops I Turned Around From The Pisces Wall Of Tank Chemicals...
Fin2you replied to Fin2you's topic in Bettas and Gouramis
Yep all the others were just there & this girl was flaring & swimming around her container! How much more could she do other than flashing a neon sign "take me home"! She's fit in just fine & I love her coloring! -
I ventured into live plants a year or 2 ago in all my tanks & failed miserably. Killed off $200 & accepted I just am no good with aquatic plants

finally figured out how to get photo's attached So this is the community tank I've been working on establishing; tank basic's: 10gal filtered with a large tetra whisper (20gal) filter & heated Tankmates: school of Rasbora's; 5 scissortails, 5 harlequin, 3 redtail/brilliant Trio of African Dwarf Frogs 2 betta females 2 Habrosus & 1 false juilii I think cory's 4 Otto Catfish 1 Clown Pleco
-
& came pretty much face to face with a beautiful girl; (the blue/green); I wasn't going to get any more but she was just so striking! I had to introduce her to the community tank slowly & ended up giving the 2 year old (red girl) a couple hours in the floating cup of shame, as she got a bit snarky. But now they seem to have accepted coexisting in the community tank with Rasbora's, cory's, pleco & frogs! The new girl is terrified of the frogs, & swims in among the school of 13 rasbora's! I was doing so well until I needed more tank chemicals.... Thankfully I should be good now for the rest of the year LOL (toonie Tuesday; buy 1 get 1 for $2!)
-
So this tank houses; 3 African Dwarf Frogs, school of harlequin & scissortail rasboras, 4 Oto catfish, some misc corys, & a baby Clown Pleco! For some reason the photo won't load will try again later!

So I told my girls when our last male betta passed away, we would get ADF for them. Well Fin passed away a few mths ago, & after some time to grieve (what can I say he lived on my breakfast bar for 4 years-pretty good for a veiltail from Pisces hey?) we have a new set up. it's a 5gal overfiltered (20gal Whisper), heated, but I am seriously considering digging out a 10gal tank from the storage room but for now this is just the old betta's tank which after Fin died just had the snails in it. It's a bit of a hodge-podge right now; it was originally going to be my Nerite snails, 2 ADF & a school of Rasbora's. Well the frogs came home 1st (wasn't impressed with the rasbora's at Pisces so I decided to wait for a new shipment). well within the 1st week all 12 of my snails were dead & the girls said they'd seen the frogs picking on them. then a friend said she wanted to get rid of the last of her rasbora's so I said I'll give them a new home; 2 harlequin(but 1 didn't survive the move) & 2 scissortail. Anyways so the tank needs some sort of algae/cleaner. I have a small school of 2 habrosus & 1 julii Cory's in the goldfish tank but the pleco does a better job of cleaning that tank of algae. I'm thinking of moving them over to the ADF tank & getting probably 3 more julii. I guess what I'm wondering is the 2 habrosus hang out together but the julii is often alone, would I be better to get bigger schools of both & have 1 variety in each tank, or can I just get more julii & let the habrosus stay as a pair. The harlequin rasbora's are the girls fav, they had 1 with more blue on it's belly (that's the one that died) & 1 with less. & while I had my eye on a school of redtails (blackline depending on who you talk too), the scissortails are pretty cool & I've caught these 2 in what I'm pretty sure is mating behaviour. so I was thinking if I got say 2 more harlequin, & a couple redtail as "showpiece", would they all school together (most of the time these 3 are all together but occassionally the 1 lone harlequin is off by itself). Hope that all makes sense, LOL I'm so busy these day's that I'm so tired I feel like I could fall asleep standing up which is the reason I haven't been around the forum much!!! But everyone gives such good advice I wanted to ask here b4 I head into Pisces & still really have no idea except what my gut is telling me!

I can vouch for both Female BN & hillstream loaches for algae control! I have 4 (1 adult, 1 juvie, 2 baby's) loaches & 2 BN baby females in my 30gal that gets alot of sunlight therefore tons of algae growth. I agree with you the male BN's "face spikeys" are creepy! So far my algae "crew" has had plenty of food that they don't eat the "bottom feeder" foods I offer. I keep offering b/c I know I am "overstocked" but they prefer the real stuff. LOL maybe once they are all full grown (even the BN's are baby's LOL) I will need to supliment more. I got my darker "common" BN at Big Al's for $6 (was only 3/4" long) & the albino who was about 2 1/2" was $12 @ Pisces. I was going to get some special guys from Harold but I couldn't justify the price to my husband so we went the more "common" route.

I can't believe how much these guys have grown in just 2 weeks. It's hard to get a picture of Ghost (the albino) b/c we're only getting rare nano-second glimpses. But the darker one .... will hang out in plain view a few times a day. This one is from Big Als, they said these baby's were brought in by a local person & they're a cross between a common & something else. Now I'm curious about the something else. anyone got a clue? I thought maybe starlight b/c of the white on the fins, but lots have that.... Also how long big usually b4 I'll be able to tell if I have male or female? I'm pretty sure Douglas is a female LOL I see no bristles at all. But Ghost maybe.... -
I had a school of dwarf cories, habrosus, julii & panda's & they happily munched on sinking pellets for bottom feeders & the occaisonal dried bloodworms that my betta missed. the tank I'm working on resetting up will most certainly have a school of these 3 again (I usually go 2 of each).
-
No there is no way, hubby works wknd shift & daught has baton practice for provincials.... Guess a trip to Pisces & BigAls is in my future.
-
I was just thinking I also have a 2gal cube I bought for my 1st female betta who was less than 3/4" when I got her.... I could put 2 frogs in it for the girls on their nightstand. Then wouldn't have to worry about the corys hogging the food.... Hmmmm
-
Both of those rasboras sound neat! Any chance you need to make a wknd trip to Calgary w/a bathroom stop in Airdrie? LOL I have had a bunch of schools of cories b4 & those 3 are my favorites.... Good point on the possible feeding issues. Especially seeing as the kids help feed
-
Yep what is wrong with this picture??? My male crowntail betta has been showing his age recently so he's been moved down to a 5.5gal. But now that means I have an empty 10gal tank sitting on my downstairs counter.... I have no idea what to do with it. I could get another betta but I'm happy with my 2 males & then the 6 females in their sorority. So what I've got: 10gal tank w/heater, 20gal Whisper filter, air pump, plenty of extra plants to do another planted tank. Only fish that's a must is another school of cories; panda & julii for sure, maybe a couple habrosus again too. & 1 of the kids likes african dwarf frogs.
-
Very cool Krista!!!
-
HA HA HA I already know; the 1st batch of plants I bought the goldfish tried eatting the 1 green & red plant as well as the little grass cover plant & the corkscrew val, so I rescued those & have used them to plant my 2 male betta's 5.5gal tanks. Still wondering if I feel up to heavily planting the female betta sorority tank.... LOL I have spent my fish budget for awhile though so until I sell the extra tanks I need to just be happy with these 3 planted!

Yesterday the common pleco went to a new home with a fellow AA member, so this morning I took the kids into Calgary... Sierra fell for a Starlight bristolnose x common bristolnose baby pleco.. kid you not its less than an inch long & Kathryn an albino pleco... So here is a picture of Baby Douglas & Ghost in my kritter keeper while I put the new decorations in the tank. Also attaching a picture of the whole tank, I am pretty pleased with it! the moss covered tree was made by another AA member & I just got java moss today to cover it!
-
I finally got to Pisces & Big Al's today for Java Moss for the tree, also found some cool rock/wood style decorations that were the right size for the tank. I had to accept defeat with the Corkscrew Val & the dwarf narrow leaf sword plants, so the only plant aside from the moss in here is the 1 solid red plant that i have a small snip & a big bunch. I think the bristolnose pleco's, hillstreem loaches & goldfish will be very happy. I know I am pleased with the look of the tank!

Oh right I forgot about toonie sale! Guess where I will be tonight?
