  1. But I am glad that is sounds like I am just panicking I really honestly cannot afford (things are TIGHT and I told my Husband I wouldn't spend on the tank -He'd be ok with pocket change but I'm surprised, and grateful, he is ok with me having one to begin with), to buy a breeding thing. I have been trying to find unwanted/unneeded fish things here and on kijiji (I know I horded and kept a TON before I sold it all that I would have given away had someone asked). I would like fry, not continually- but once or twice...(how do I word that correctly..?)? is there a way to keep the females in the same tank (rig a divider or something)? I think maybe I'd separate the fry out until I can get my hands on ricca/moss of sorts, if they come first. If it was well planted and the ratios right I could see it being ok for survival of the fittest but I have some pathetic plastic plants at this point.
  2. HI all, forgive my ignorance but... I was given free guppies last night. In there tank were 4 enormously pregnant females and about 15 males (clearly the ratios where dead on). I took 5 males to add to my two (they have arched backs a bit- is that poor breeding or inbreeding or the norm for that particular type of guppy?)and, I'm afraid the homeschool mom in me took over and I took two pregnant ones too (feel free to scoff at me. I've attached a link to pics of the females, males and the little bowfront tank I have the females in (YES I know the decor in there is hideous- but its what I got and it was free). The females are very stressed- and probably where their entire existence, they old owners said that they have been pregnant forever. do they look like they want to pop? how can I make them comfortable? what kind of DIY contraption is best? put the females back into the big tank but in something that separates them from the rest of the fish and can also separate the fry out from the females? leave them in that ugly tank (my Husband will not be impressed if that tank stays up permanently.. so I have doubts if I will be keeping any females long-term), and somehow rig it to separate the fry (or females) out? I googled it but, I wound up with more questions than answers.... any reliable links to the basics? http://s1238.photobu...violet/guppies/ ( I am sorry for the lack of quality in the pics)
  3. thanks, I am glad they survived. they were so pale and the water so dirty I thought maybe they were red finned sharks... but the they were getting some color and that line on their sides and I figured I'd just ask. now I would like to find a handful for them to school, they are nice!
  4. I bought a bunch of the same little guys when I first got into tropical fish- I *really * like all the dwarf and tiny ones. they ALL died. Maybe I will try them again in this tank after its been settled a while. they are very cute and very nice to watch. corys are a beautiful little critter.

    Hello!

Hi its good to be back! Before I found this forum I had fancy goldfish (who needed a bigger tank anyway). Then after exploring this site and learning of aquascapes, I ended up with a pretty decent 29 g planted tank set up with a variety of flora, 40ish different rasboras of different types (I like 'em because they are small, colorful, and they school in lovely ways), peppered corys, a bristlenose pleco, cherry shrimp, and a zebra snail. I married, my beloved left the Military, we downsized to accommodate the transition and we sold most of our stuff, including my tank. We kept a small plastic 5 gallon with some smaller rasboras and got a couple guppies for our daughters. I was content to be done with aqua gardens but, I was recently blessed with another smaller, but nicer, tank for free so I'm back! My Husband and I are saved by the grace of God through Jesus Christ, we are members of a reformed Presbyterian church here in Edmonton. We have three children, soon to be four in October. He is now seeking out a career of sorts in Law enforcement. I am a housewife/homemaker, I homeschool our two eldest, sew, and am just learning how to better care for our family every day.
  6. oops- put this in the wrong section...
  7. I just googled it and I think you are right - they were pasty white when I got them yesterday and now, are just getting some color back (The guy said they were troopers b/c they had been in the same nasty water for almost a year...). Thanks
  8. HI there, I was wondering if anyone in my neck of the woods had some overgrowth I could have. I sold my tank after my Husband left the military- downsized bigtime- and all its flora and fauna goodness with it. But, I had one give to me but.... I cant afford to spend his money on anything of the sort so, may I have your I rejects please?
  9. had some neglected fish given to me but, I dont know what they are. Sorry for my horrible picture (Ill take more if this one is too crumby)!
  10. my loggin and user id both have something to do with my maiden name, so my questin is how do I fix it so I can show off the new one???
  11. I'm such a dork! a zebra snail NOT an apple snail (huge difference! where was my brain...?sorry!) and yes i do have potassium; but not sure if i am dosing- i'll have to check- there was one i wasn't using.
  12. hey! they are 6400k and from all seasons and i bought them in january. i've been doing the ei method (chemicals as prescribed- but only precisely for two weeks now- wasn't consistent before that for a while) and i have ottos, cories, and MTS, shrimp and rasboras, and an apple snail. there used to be other plant munchin snails but i stripped the whole tank about two months ago and they are GONE (sweet victory!). um no algae issues.
  13. I've never had problems with them before and now its just frustrating! Um, they were neglected a bit for about a month (guilty-i know!) and I have been really babying them but it seems to be getting worse not better. dry ferts and 2.64 wpg (i believe they are T05s), and excel- i don't know what else to tell you but ask away- any words of wisdom would be appreciated! overdose? underdose? the pictures
  14. wow! its beautiful and I am trying soo hard not to be jealous right now- awesome job! where did you get the black sand? and how much did it cost you?
  15. how much did the paintball canister set up cost? forgive my ignorance but about how much space did it take up too?
  16. I see...makes sense. so nicer colors but would the shape of the hets be nicer? they are thicker aren't they?
  17. Actually it was aquagiant- I keep trying to make it over to natures but it will have to be a special trip 'cause i always make it there too late and pork-chops?! where did that come from? and about the rummies- wuold that overstock it? how big do they get?
  18. Hets v.s. Rasbora espei ? (went to buy hets and found these... which was then followed by my walking out undecided again what would look better?
  19. I think i will- the barbs would throw off the 'scale' of i all. how many? 7? they look best in schools don't they?
  20. Hi all! I have 22 pygmy rasboras, 6 peppered cories and 2-4 ottos and a few cherry shrimp in a planted 29 G tank. but dispite the # of rasboras they still disapear/ or blend in and the tank looks bear at times. I would like to get another smaller school of something that is brighter and a bit bigger maybe to help... I tink it would make a big difference. I was thinking cherry barbs (too aggressive?), rasboras hets, possibly cardinals... I like the oranges and reds though- earthy bold colors ya know?
  21. ok, I couldn't be more annoyed! :chair: I bought 3 fat little frogs and they are dead and I bought them feb.28th. and the almost-funny part is the pygmies are doing great! I haven't done much different with the water (I even went through the trouble of building them a moss wall! ...by sewing Christmas moss onto those plastic grids with plastic string- 2hours later....), but the one was barely getting to the surface yesturday...totally wierd. I think they might have starved to death? now that I think about it i don't remember them eating. I put the freeze-dried blood worms right in front of them (i just figured I was scary), and I was also putting flakes in there just in case. little bits 2x a day. i don't know what else it could be.
  22. I was wondering. I had eight pygmy cories and I didn't see them for like two weeks (amzing hiders but, I did a major cleaning of the tank and there are only three left. I only have small community fish. but I was wondering if it was my sound system'cause they are in my living room. anyways, Iwas wondering if I could move the survivors into the frog tank. they're full grown. I really like this fish and I hate that they keep dieing and are unhappy. as for feeding, I am wondering if I could culture those flour beetles for food for them. (this thread is turning into a frog FAQ ) )
