  1. Ya I won't be able to get away with that stunt again! She's already tallying the cost of fish, plants, sump, etc.... Lol Santa will be extra good to her this year Thank you Its been fun getting setup. Got the itch to get the 230G up and running now!!
  2. I rinsed mine when I got them just to get the powder off! They were in the tank within the hour of the delivery man dropping them off
  3. Thank you DevonC! Picking up more fish and plants this weekend, will update with more photos once everything is settled Awesome Don_D! Look forward to following the progress once you get it all started
  4. New pics of some tetras I added to the tank
  5. Sorry my bad, I'm not using a diffuser I'm using an aqua medic co2 reactor in the return pump section of my sump. The return pump is 1200 GPH, and the Sump holds about 30g of water. I'm assuming, maybe incorrectly, that the co2 reactor is diffusing the co2 into the return section water and it is moving back into the tank fairly quickly. I'm hoping all and all that I'm not losing any co2 in the return section, or if any a small inconsequential amount. I'm absolutely open to comments and suggestions on how to improve the setup
  6. Thanks! I have my co2 diffuser in my sump, 2 corner overflows returning the water back into the tank so I'm hoping it's enough to evenly distribute throughout the tank. In my 50g the plants were growing so fast, had to trim the rotala every 2 weeks, we will see how fast they grow in this new setup

    120G Planted

The wife gave me the blessing a couple weeks ago to upgrade my 50G corner tank to something a bit bigger, $200 was my limit. Found a great deal on kijiji for a 6' 120G, it was a little dirty, but after a couple hours i was able to scrap away most of the saltwater algae. Once it was all cleaned i picked up some soil substrate from ckmullin and started the process of moving my plants from the old tank to the new tank. Decided to use the Fluval stratum from the old tank on top of the soil, I had so many malaysian trumpet snails in the stratum and figured i should keep them and didnt want to go through the stratum trying to pick out all the snails. Picked up a Aqueon proflex sump at a great price, got it all connected, got my pressurized CO2 and my LEDs set back up. And now its looking pretty good Now all i need to do is stock it up.
  8. Updated pic...loving this tank! Watching the amazons grow now that they are out front
  9. I had no issues keeping my JD's in my mixed cichlid tank. They were great at controlling the fry population from exploding!
  10. I bought my 230G, stand and sump there and was thoroughly impressed with their customer service, prices and speedy completion of the tank! I would absolutely recommend them to anyone looking to get their first tank or upgrade to a bigger/better tank
  11. Thanks Ckmullin, I'm pretty sure it's time to remove some from the tank I do love how clear the duckweed keeps the tank though. Replaced the 2 HOBs with a Fluval 305 and got the peacocks out of the tank. I'm going to let the kribensis fry grow out in this tank, hopefully mom and pop don't decide to have another batch here right away!
  12. http://forum.simplydiscus.com/showthread.php?112041-The-Forum-s-Position-on-Discus-in-Planted-Tanks This thread on simply Discus is amazing, lots of great information from people running successful tanks. Discus in a planted tank CAN be done and I intend on attempting this in the (hopefully near) future. One piece of advice that i took from brewmasters post is that i need to learn the husbandry of both planted tanks and discus keeping. I have decided to convert the 230G to a fully planted soil substrate, and move all my plants/livestock from my current 50G into that tank. I will utilize the 50G to raise a couple Discus in a BB tank and let the learning begin. Hopefully I will be able to combine the two tanks and reach my goal.
  13. I have spent a number of days on simply discus reading about a number of tank setups and discus keeping methodology. Quite a few people actually have successfully run discus tanks with substrate and with a soil substrate. I agree that it's a big project, and maybe a little much for my first discus tank. However I like a good challenge My first priority will be to get the tank setup and running without discus and learning about running a planted tank with just soil as the substrate and go from there. I will have a 50G empty once the 230 is setup and have thought about getting a couple discus and putting them in there. This will give me an oppurtunity to learn about Discus through experience before trying to achieve my end goal
  14. Yes, i have read about concerns where the soil can become denitrificated however users have suggested using deep rooting plants and MTS to battle these issues. Ideally i would like to go for a carpet along the substrate but having issues locating a plant that will create the ideal ground cover and survive in a discus tank.
  15. Sterbai, these will be the first Corys I've kept and have read they can take the temp for discus and are great tank mates.
  16. Thanks, from what ive read using the Miracle Gro Organic potting soil mix is the best way to go. What do you use in your tanks?
  17. Ok, so originally my idea was to rebuild my 230 gallon as a Peacock Cichlid tank however over the last couple months watching my planted tank has been very rewarding and the wife and I have discussed setting up the 230G as a planted tank, and adding Discus (not immediately but once we feel the tank is stable). So the thought process currently is as follows: 1. Create a 3D background (similar to this: http://www.notjustfish.com/images/products/665.jpg) 2. Setup under gravel jets 3. Get the tank setup with my current plants from my 50G using a soil substrate capped with white sand. 4. Cycle the tank and add Discus friendly fish (Corys, German Blue Rams, Tetras, etc...) 5. Add Amano Shrimp (I've read lots about how if they are big enough they can co-habitat with Discuss just fine) 6. Finally add my Discus I'm looking for opinions and thoughts from users who have had experience with Discus and get some feedback on the Soil substrate idea. Cheers, Tom
  18. Well its been quite some time since I've posted and I figured it was time to get some new pics uploaded The tank has been amazing and I've seen some amazing growth using the pressurized Co2 and Seachem Flourish every few days. Recently i added some duckweed which my wife loves, its adds a fun element to the tank as the filters push it under the water towards the front of the tank. I will finally be removing the Dragonblood cichlids from the tank as i have a friend that is going to take them all and breed them. The mating pair of kribs have had two batches of fry, the first batch didnt last long however this last batch is growing quite quickly and most of them are still alive. Pictures below, i will do better about adding pictures as i take them

    230G Rebuild

Well the plan has changed quite a bit so i figured it was time to update this thread. This tank will be heavily planted, soil substrate tank similar to my 120G. However with this tank i want to do a dry start, get some good carpet growth and cover the driftwood in moss and riccia. I am in the process of picking up driftwood from multiple sources, manzanita-driftwood.com, AA Members and Kijiji. I have ordered numerous 3' long pieces that are going to stand from the substrate through the top of the tank. There will be a 2-3 inch space from the rear of the tank to where the driftwood starts and I want to plant some tall background plants (rotala, r. ludwigia, vallisneria, and bacopa) when it comes time to flood the tank. In front of the driftwood im going to use a combination of Echinodrus, Anubias, S. Repens as midground and foreground plants around the ground cover driftwood. The eventual goal will be to add Discus to the tank once the system has stabilized. Lots of work to do to get there, ill reserve a number of posts to show the progress of the tank as time goes on.
  20. Got this tank from a friend so i decided to take all my plants from my Cichlid tank and setup a planted aquarium. I had some fish leftover from my sale so i stocked it with those fish as well. Here are some details: Fluval Stratum substrate PennPlax 300 Filter PS20 powerhead with sponge pre-filter Tetra Whisper internal filter Current USA Freshwater plus 48" LED lights Pressurized Co2 - utilizing the powerhead to diffuse the Co2 Plants: Rotala Pennywort Hornwort Anubias Java Fern Amazon Sword Fish: 30 Juvie Dragonblood Peacocks (I will want to get these guys out of here as soon as possible) Pair of breeding Kribensis (and about 10 fry) Common Pleco 2 Nerite Snails Ramshorns Planaria (i think)
  21. Mountain Movers is moving my tank next weekend. They know another company that can help you move it in the event they are booked solid as well.
  22. My goal is to get the tank as clean as possible, I will be doing a 3D background once the move has been completed and i need to ensure all the bits of sand and what not is out of the tank. I figured the shop vac would be the best solution to get up all the bits a shovel/dustpan would normally miss.
  23. I am going to be tearing down my tank this weekend, i have seen on other sites people have used shop vacs to suck up their sand and gravel. I am wondering if anyone here has tried this and if you can bestow any tips tricks for this process. Thank you!
  24. OK i got my pressurized co2 all hooked up and running great... I've started testing my water everyday to watch the kh, gh and ph to ensure i'm not swinging too much. What is the acceptable swing range? As of this morning i'm at: kh 12 degrees gh 15 degrees ph 7.6 ammonia 0 ppm nitrite 0 ppm nitrate 20 ppm
