Wow! Amazing color! Tammy
-
I have Bronze Cories breeding with no encouragement from me. I think 2-3 have survived from every batch. I now have 22 babies that have made it in the main tank. Nice looking too. Not bronze really, a nice emerald shade of green. Mothers were albino, fathers were regular bronze color. They spawn once every 8-9 days, usually a day ore two after a WC. Tammy

Need some help! Abandoned Koi!
Fish_Frenzy replied to Fish_Frenzy's topic in General Aquaria Discussion
The drag net won't work as there is alot of big rocks and plants for it to snag on. We are going to rent a pump and drain it some tomorrow...think it's the best bet. Thanks for the advice Tammy -
As you can see he knows what he is doing hahaha, or his fish wouldnt be doing good. How old are th RTG's? It was some honest advice....some people don't know everything. And yes, I can see he has nice fish.

I need some quick advice. Here is the situation. A person we know has gone bankrupt and has abandoned his property, on this property is a 10,000 Gallon Koi pond. He has asked us to deal with what fish remain (most have died off apparently) The pond is HUGE! Deepest point is 4 feet, about 24 feet long. How do we get the fish out?? They stay at the bottom and have plenty of hiding spots. No way to pump out some water. Riverfront kindly lent us a Koi net but we are unable to corral them as the pond is 12 feet wide. These guys are in dire need of being moved. The pond was stocked last summer with 16 Koi, there are roughly 6 left. They were hand picked and shipped in from Japan (cost the fellow over 27,000 bucks) at 3-5" long Can only catch glimpes of them. Have tried to bribe them with food but they are so scared they refused it. Any ideas guys?? Tammy

Gorgeous fish! Just a quick warning, you shouldn't keep Discus and Angels together as Angels carry a bacteria that is dangerous for Discus. Tammy
-
Awesome tank and Oscars! They dwarf that tank!! I thought it was about a 50G, then read a 120 and  Very nice. Tammy

I have 4 Amano shrimp and the female has eggs almost all the time...unfortunately, I know nothing about brackish/salt tanks and the eggs just end up being eaten. I am strictly a freshie...I can raise almost anything in fresh water...but I know I would screw up salt lol! Tammy

What's your water parameters? I would say start with a big water change (60% -70%) and some melafix. Hope this helps some. I always start with a water change and go from there. Tammy
-
I would start with a big water change, and slowly raise the temp to 84F-86F. What other fish are in the tank besides Discus? Tank size? Discus need to be in a group when they are small. Some even need to be in a group when they are large (I have a pair I tried to seperate to breed and they started going downhill until I put them back with their group.) Temp is too low for Discus also. Are they eating? What are you feeding them? Sorry about all the questions...just trying to narrow the problem down a bit. Tammy
-
Sounds to me like she is on the bottom of the pecking order. How many Discus are in the tank? How big are they? Water temp? Water parameters? Tammy

Sorry for your loss, maybe try one of the smaller loaches such as Striatas or Kubotai, and then you can fit more than 1 in your tank as they are a very social species...I would say a minimum of 4 or 5 loaches to be happy and display more natural behavior. Tammy
-
I am sorry for your loss, you have my heartfelt sympathy. It sounds like you have alot of happy memories of time spent with your furbaby. Tammy

I would have to agree with fatpuffer and geleen. I am pretty sure your Angels will not make it thru a tank cycling. The molly might make it...cories are iffy too. Where in calgary are you? I am willing to hold your fish in my hospital tank and give you a bunch of filter goo (good bacteria) if you are able to come and drop them off and pick up the goo. Tammy

Ok all you pleco fanatics, I need some help. I have a total of 19 BN, a mix of regular, albino, and lemon drop. Out of all those...I only have 2 with big bristles. Some of the big bristles, some have little bristles, some have none. I have one adult that is really aggressive (chases 5"& 6" yoyos away.) But he/she only has tiny little upper lip whiskers (maybe 1/2cm). Is it a female?? I can't put other BN in with it as it has viciously attacked 2 other BN. Thanks for your advice Tammy

Cardinals do better in warmer tanks. I have mine between 82-84F. I would get a few more Cardinals and leave the Labs out. A larger school looks great in a species tank. Tammy

albino BN with a red spot

Scary! (That long finned guy above) I have to say, if I saw that BN in the wild, I would run screaming in the other direction! -
The most important thing is to keep doing water changes...I would say 30% a day until you get those readings down. The Discus need good water quality to thrive and when they start going downhill, they go down fast. Also, I would add an Aqua Clear filter on the tank (if you have one) just for extra filtration and aeration. Once everything is back to normal in the tank, I would remove the carbon from the filter as it is said to be detrimental to the health of Discus. Some say it causes hole in the head or HLLE. You didn't mention the temperature of the tank. A minimum temp for Discus should be 82F-84F....sorry if you already know this, just trying to be thorough. Feed very little until the readings are lowered also as it will just add to the problems. I would think that filter is adequate, though the more filtration, the better. I have 2 filters on all my Discus tanks in case anything happens to one, also makes cleaning the filter (in water removed during water change) easier as I can clean one filter one wc, and another the next without any problems. Hope this helps some, Tammy

Ooooh! Connie! I am jealous...gorgeous little fish. I want one...unfortunately, I don't think the Discus would like it much. Tammy
-
Ohhh! very nice Kevin! nice round bodies, high fins...they are going to be lookers when they get bigger. I like the one in the 4th pic..unusual coloring.

I know Golds and Riverfront both carry it...Elite does too I believe. Patience is the key to getting Discus to eat... when they get hungry enough, they will eat. Once they see what the other Discus eat, they will get the idea. I had one go almost 2 weeks without eating and he finally get the idea. Tammy

I still feed Tetra Color Bits to our Discus. It was the first dry food we could get the juvies to eat (they also had frozen bloodworms). I soaked the bits and some flake in bloodworm juice for about a week , then gradually cut down the amount of fluid until they ate the dry stuff on their own. All of our Discus still prefer Tetra Color Bits over NLS though they eat both. Our Discus also pick at NLS H2o Stable wafers and they can stay in the aquarium for a whole day. I know alot of Discus keepers don't use bottom feeders in their tanks but I prefer to have a few Corys or such in our tanks to clean up what the Discus don't eat. Especially when trying to get them started on dry food. It keeps the amount of food rotting in the tank to a minimum. I know they create waste of their own, lol, but I think it is a better waste than rotting food. Sterbai Corys (for example) love the warmer temp of Discus tanks and they are great little clean up crews. Tammy

I believe it is a good idea to remove the carbon/charcoal. I have 18 tanks and just have foam in them...also have a few that have the bio rings too but mostly they just have foam. Discus/Angels I have read that it is not good to use carbon unless to remove meds, so you are correct there. Tammy

Your Angels will be fine in a 55G. This is the best site I have found for excellent advice. I am just glad to pass some of what I have learned here on to others. Once you move the other fish out, look into getting some dithers for your Discus. I have a school of Cardinals (24) and my Discus are out much more...they used to hide alot too. Have fun! This hobby is so addictive...started with one 25G tank and now have 18 tanks just over 600G. Talk about MTS! Tammy
