  1. The Plant is most likely Ludwigia repens
  2. Maybe the proposed river valley aquarium will have it? http://rivervalley.ab.ca/media/pdf/rva-area5.pdf http://rivervalley.ab.ca/map/ Certainly would be nice to build something of the like here.... I think I shall contact them .......hmmmmmmmmmm
  3. Yes it is a wet goods exchange,(not used filters/heaters etc.) so bring some plants or fishes and you will go home with other plants and or fishes. I will also be bringing along some Tropica plants to sweeten the deal. So don't be disappointed and bring something along for the exchange and enjoy the Christmas exchange. Cheers Rudy ACE
  4. If you missed it  it was a great presentation! Kudo to Dustin!!!! rk
  5. Green Water sounds like an opportunity ....daphnia anyone. It always helps, cause if you have daphnia you can never keep green water, and when you have green water no daphnia to be found rk

  7. Does your tank have a lid or is it an open top? If it is an open top Water Lettuce will work, but it does like a bit of light. Other plants I would recommend for lidded tanks are Frogbit (Limnobium laevigatum) & Pennywort (Hydrocotyle leucephala) both work well and will easily fill your needs. Water Lettuce does not like continued moisture and will often not do well if placed in a lidded aquarium, the other two don't much care. rk
  8. Seen one in Edmonton today in operation, very cool. Launch date is coming within a few weeks.(Inside info) It has allot of info on the filter about the temp, state of Mechanical/Biological/Chemical filtration(how plugged or spent the filter material is)temperature graph & even conductivity etc. Looks like a very interesting filter. rk
  9. One suggestion I would make is if at all possible start with plants that are grown emersed to save time and aggravation. Most potted plants that arrive in stores are grown in this way(Tropica). Best is to get some when a shipment is arriving as this way you will eliminate the meltdown etc. Once plants have been placed in water for a day or so things begin to get more difficult. The complete wetness of the plant can cause molding or just gradual decomposition. Having brought in plants on a commercial scale for over 20 years I can attest to this. Even with Tropica plants it is important to acclimatize them slowly to the "new" humidity that you will be growing them under. This is best done by floating them in trays and putting plastic over them and gradually removing the plastic over time as to allow them to harden in a sense. If you happen to be at the ACE auction this weekend I will be bringing in several plants including Ludwigia glandulosa(pereunsis) that have been grown in this manner. There are always many challenges with emersed culture also including aphids an other critters as you will certainly find out in time..... maybe a couple frogs would help in your case. Hope the info helps Regards Rudy
  10. Another auction in Edmonton this weekend. I'm sure there will be plenty of interesting stuff there also. P.S. Nice pic of the ram guarding her brood RK
  11. Lots of plants for sure plus hmm a couple swordtails maybe a few other fish a tank and whatever else I may find
  12. Looking at the tank my first thoughts are more plants less worrying about fert etc. Plants don't need fertilizer until they are actively growing. The ferts come second. Double the plant load especially with fast growing plants such as vals,hygro,sag...etc and the rest will begin to sort themselves out Rudy
  13. Hello If you are getting a swamp like smell it is classic blue green algae smell (cyno bacteria) Which means the aquarium is either laking adequate water changes that have produced higher than normal nitrate & phosphate levels and or yhat lower than required oxygen levels exist. It can be remedied by doing more water changes, adding excel, using a tetracycline product or even hydrogen peroxide in"small" doses have been shown to work Best of all increased water changes are your first defense & best solution. All other "remedies" should be researched before applying Rudy
  14. Grew it years ago with no CO2 but lots of light about 6-8 40 watt tubes if I remember correctly. Usually it does not ship well so the plant you get is sometimes a little bit of a dishrag or was with other that were, often only 20% of the total amount coming is is salvageable. Thus not available that much and a little of a rarity. If you see it in fine form at a LFS it is has come from a local hobbyist. Hope it does well for you Rudy
  15. I'll save you a couple. Should be another Great raffle... hmm what to bring? R
  16. Hi Any idea what the ph & kh of the water is? Also have you ever recharged the purigan in the past. You mention that it was "old" had you recharged it or was it just waiting for that to be done? Also wondering what happened with the C02 why was it discontinued. Sounds like a crash of some sort but more info required before one can figure out the actual cause. Rudy
