  1. So I was in Big Al's today just browsing their stock for something to do and came across 3 goliath tiger fish around 4 inches long. I've seen a few pictures of these full grown in the wild and was surprised to see them in a chain store lIke that. Let alone any store. The price tag seemed reasonable for how rare they are in the hobby ($260 I believe). Really cool fish but I can't imagine many people want to pay that kind of money for just one fish. Or would have the room to house something that big and aggressive. But I suppose there's always somebody with money to spend that wants something super rare.
  2. I feel I should add that if keeping the cories a sand substrate is highly recommended as rough gravel can damage their sensitive barbels. And if keeping shrimp a planted tank works best. Gives the shrimp a place to hide if they need to.
  3. Hi and welcome to AA. Tankmates for bettas can be tough. It all depends on your specific betta's behaviour. Danios are usually no good as they have a tendency to be very nippy and will constantly pick at your bettas fins. That being said I have heard of it working for some people. Guppies or any other fish with brightly colored or long trailing fins similar to the betta are a definite no as your betta could become aggressive towards them. You could keep a school of smaller fish like ember tetras or harlequin rasboras easily in a 10 gallon. I would recommend 6-8 of either one. A small shoal of corydoras would be a good choice. They tend to stick to the bottom and are great for keeping the bottom of the tank clean. If stocking cories you want at least 4. 6 is usually a good number if your tank can support it. They are much less shy in groups and will be seen alot more. For something different you could try a few cherry shrimp. I have heard both good and bad about having them with bettas. I currently have 6 adults in a 10 gallon with my betta and a pair of scarlet badis. The shrimp have been breeding and my betta doesn't seem to bother the adults or the babies. I'm sure other members will have more suggestions as well. On a related note if you don't know how many fish you can stock in your tank aqadvisor.com is a good tool to get you started. Good luck with your stocking and let us know how it goes.
  4. That's what I've heard from alot of people. Prices all look very reasonable from what I've seen too. I live and work 10 minutes from Edmonton International so it's not a problem to go pick them up either.
  5. Thanks. I was thinking those were probably my best options. I'll probably be placing an order in the next couple weeks
  6. I just did this to my 75 gallon with similar lights from Rona. The ones I got were $27 on sale (regular $42). They come as 4x2 foot strips with flexible connectors. You can also buy individual strips or puck style lights to add onto it for around $18 each (up to 8 strips/pucks per controller I believe). I just bought the starter kit and it was enough to run the length of my 4ft tank twice. They also come with handy clips to hang them as well as the adhesive backing. I just stuck mine straight onto the underside of my homemade canopy and they look awesome. I might get a reflector eventually. Couldn't be happier with this product.
  7. I am currently stocking a 75 gallon Lake Tanganyika community tank. Was wondering if anybody in Edmonton area breeds any of these species? A.calvus N.tretocephalus J.regani C.leptosoma 'tricolor' or 'utinta' Any other Tanganyikan would be considered as well Thanks in advance
  8. I'm not running anything currently. Been looking into co2 gas. With everything else going on I kind of forgot about it though. Hopefully soon
  9. I'll add to this. Fish I Have: Tiger Barb (regular, green and albino) Red Tail Black Shark Kribensis Clown Pleco Celestial Pearl Danio False Julii Corydoras Betta Scarlet Badis Tropheus Duboisi 'Maswa' Eretmodus Cyanostictus Kribensis are currently spawning and all fry will need rehoming. Looking to start breeding CPD's soon if there's any interest
  10. This is my 37 cube. Just redid the layout a couple weeks ago. My first real attempt at aquascaping. I must say im quite pleased with it. And most importantly so are the livestock (10 Celestial Pearl Danios, 2 False Julii Cories, 6 Oto, 1 male Gold Ram, 2 Rock Shrimp and 10-15 Red Cherry Shrimp)
  11. Hi everyone. I got into fish when I was 14 with a couple smaller (10 and 20 gallon) live bearer tanks. Lost interest for a while due to some other things going on. Now 10 years later here I am. I have 2 tanks that have been up and running for about a year now. A 55 with mixed color tiger barbs, RTBS,a pair of kribs (and currently 20 or so newly hatched fry) and a clown pleco. The other is a 37 cube with CPD's, oto and RCS. My girlfriend recently talked me into setting up a betta tank as well. 10 gallon with a male delta tail and 2 ADF. All 3 tanks are planted and have gone through alot of changes in the last year to get them just how i want. Also currently in the process of resealing and setting up a recently aquired 75 gallon for use as a Tanganyikan cichlid tank. So if anybody knows of a Lake Tang breeder in the Edmonton area a name and contact info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
