  1. I dont know much about this, but it would seem to me if you took out a small amount of star grass and put it in a small bucket with some excel, that would be a good way to test to see if it will melt...
  2. Just thought I would show you guys an update on the new fish. Pretty excited.
  3. Couldnt attend the CAS auction so did a little shopping of my own, a few plants and a a pair of convicts, (free fry food for the severums!) 29 Gal Convicts 46 Gal Bowfront
  4. I dont think that ive ever seen those two together before. Butterfly fish are quite slow, with pretty elaborate fins, so i doubt it would be a good combo. Im sure someone with more experience will be on with an oppinion soon.
  5. Here are some pics of my tanks. Finally got the substrate switched around and the big tank cycled. Waiting for the new canister filter to come on the bus from my moms house. ... Does anyone see any problems with it if it was previously used for salt water? 29 Gallon, Stocked with: 1 Male Jack Dempsey 1 Common Pleco 2 Fiddler Crabs 46 Gallon, Stocked with: 2 Gold Severum 2 Red Shouldered Severum 3 Albino Corydoras 4 Bronze Corydoras 3 Zebra Danios. 1 BristleNose Pleco
  6. Sorry to hijack your post, but i have a question for you. Why did you cycle your tank with no substrait? are their advantages to doing it this way? Tanks looks good!
  7. Good to know. right now he is living the solitary life in my cycling 46. I think he will be able to handel it, hes a strong fish. After it is cycled im going to put him back into my 29 until i know what to do with him. He beats up everything i put in with him... im not really sure what to do... lol... free to a good home in the area if one exists.
  8. Yup, its the walmart 46. I love it even if it is from wally world. The rocks are from burnco. 10 dollars for the lot of them.
  9. A couple Pics of the new 46, Wasn't sure where else to post em...
  10. My boyfriend got 4 "firemouths" at petcetera. one died after about a week, he didnt eat the entire time i had him. one is doing fine, the other firemouth is in a quarintine tank, im not sure whats wrong with him, really dark skin, with some patchy areas with missing scales, and frayed fins. Thought he was being harassed by my CAE, but hes been gone for about a week and a half and this guy hasnt gotten any better... the third i guess is a jack dempsey... Im really not doing so well with my fish...
  11. Alright then, thanks Jay. How long do you think he would be able to stay in the 30gal for? As, in how fast do they grow? Ive heard they can get to 12inches, which is a little tight, haha.
  12. Thanks Nandopsis, thats good to know. He just seems like an agressive little guy. (he has claimed half the tanks as his territory and wont let any other cichlids in it. He doesn't seem to mind the cory's or the danios though.
  13. May or may not bet that... I was in walmart here in lethbridge and saw one similar to that only was marked at 55 gals. Ill be a bit disappointed if its only 46. Hopefully it will still work though. I would like a pair of severums and a pair of kribs. There is a pair of wild caught kribs at the tropical fish imports down here i am lusting after, but could not even possibly think of getting for another month.... And crap about the mistery fish being a dempsey. Ill have to figure out what to do with him... I like him a lot but he might become a problem when he gets bigger.
  14. So, in celebration of my 22 birthday I got my self a new fish, its a juvie gold severum, between 1,5 and 2,5 inches... And, eventually (as in, in 2 weeks, after payday) I will be getting a new 55 gallon bowfront from Walmart, so in about a month and a bit will be able to move this little guy and my cories into it. Right now have him in my 30 gallon with one firemouth, and one unknown, sold to me as a firemouth, but so obviously not a firemouth, was advised by someone on here that it may be a cross breed... (ill post a pic incase anyone else has any ideas...) Anyway, I think all will be well in the smaller tank as they are all juvinlie fish, and they seem to be ok after an initial fight over dominance, any thoughts on that would be appreciated as well. I may have to invest in a tank divider... Anyway here is the pic. And here is the cross breed, or whatever...
  15. I'm trying my best to catch him before he does any more damage to my fishes, but he knows i am on to him and hides everytime i come near the tank. I'm getting a new 50 gal bowfront for my birthday coming up, so he wont be being transfered to the new tank. I think he will be hitching a ride on the porcelain express... From the sounds of it nobody would want him.
  16. Thanks For the advice Sam. ...I just wanted to thank you for all the great advice you post on the board. I for one really appreciate all of your help.
  17. I got this chinese algae eater when he was about a half inch, but now he is about two inches long, and he keeps trying to attach himself to the subdominant firemouths in my tank. Is it time to take him out, or is their anything i can do? He leaves the cory's and the danio's alone, he only bothers the cichilds, but they are starting to look a little harassed, one, who has since been quarintined, turned up with some white around his mouth and in one spot along the dorsal fin, I dont think it is ich, as it is quite large and appeared overnight, i think it might be the CAE beating on him, or perhaps one of the bigger firemouths, but cant be too sure.... any advise would help. Thanks Jilly.
  18. some of mine. Awesome Idea to start a daily photo thread. Anyone know what this guy is? was sold to me with some firemouths, but as he grew up, he turned into something else. A real Firemouth This is Little Claw, He isnt a fish, but here is a pic anyway Bronze Cory I'm not too sure what this guy is either...
  19. It definatly is a niger trigger. She got most of the fish in there for free from a guy in Red Deer who was moving and could not take his tank with him. Eventually ill try and get some pic's of my own posted, but mine is a much smaller tank. only 30 gallon, so it is harder to get good shots. Any advice would be appreciated.
  20. This is my first time trying to post any pictures on this forum, so I hope it works. I took some photos of my moms 77 salt water while i was visiting at chirstmas. Let me know what you think. -Jilly
  21. I wish I could help you but I actually am not too sure myself.
  22. No Kidding... In Lethbridge when we go somewhere we go to Calgary... at least when we want to buy fish... Anyway, you could definatly check out the Tropical Fish Imports, they usually are worth looking at. The Petland is really small, expecially concidering what you are used to, but they are going under rennovations, and hopefully soon it will be better... I'm a little choked at the Petcetera, as everything that comes out of there has ich, at least everything I have seen, not speaking for everyone... so I personally dont shop there... Also my boyfriend bought me two male russian dwarf hamsters from there and they had babies... It was fun, but quite a hassel. regardless I just don't feel like they are a reliable place for livestock. Anyway I digress. Enjoy your trip. Jilly
  23. ...So i ended up picking up 3 young, about an inch, Firemouth cichlids. They seem to be doing really well, and nothing bothers them. I will post some pictures with the camra i will hopefully be getting for christmas. Am looking into a larger tank after christmas... Hopefully the firemouths do well, I found some conflicting information on how many to keep. Is three enough? Or is it too few and agression will be a problem? Any Thoughts?
