  1. I like tofeed mine live brine shrimp for two weeks but not necessary.
  2. In the States I can get a Coralife F/W T-5 Aqualight Double Strip Light-48" for $52 (The Coralife F/W Aqualight T-5 is a double lamp fixture ideal for freshwater and planted aquariums. Includes one Colormax Full Spectrum and one 6700K T-5 (5/8 diameter) fluorescent lamp. Features an on/off switch, a built in electronic ballast, sleek black aluminum housing, a highly polished reflector, acrylic lens cover and adjustable width tank mounts. T-5 lamps are 28 watts each.) Or I can get All-Glass Single Deluxe Strip Light- 48" for the same price (The All-Glass Strip-Light is a replacement light for Versa-Hoods and Full Hoods or it can be used wherever extra lighting is needed. These Fluorescent models feature internally mounted ballasts with an instant-start circuit that allows you to operate the light on a timer or switch controlled outlet. Deluxe models come with polished aluminum reflectors and full length tubes). I don't need a double strip at all but maybe T-5s are better? Any pros and cons to both types?
  3. Any particular reason you went the Kamloops route? Did you find them hard to find in Alberta or cheaper there?
  4. I had an Eheim 2217 and an AClear110 on a 90 gallon for a time. I now run two 2217s and a 2213 on a 180 gallon tank. It depends on the amount of fish and type of fish and size of fish. If you are only running a 2217, I'd say max. 50 gallons and min. 33 gallons.
  5. I've never bred Hermits but I once dated a woman with crabs!! Sorry - bad pun from the Punman.

    Painting glass

Krylon paint from Walmart. Tape the tank and cover with newspaper.
  7. Glad you have a sense of humor!! {Crypt is actually an short form of Cryptocoryne - a plant used in fish tanks so you were on track}
  8. I think you'd be safe with crypts - just stay away from cyps!! I appreciate the suggestions. I think I will give cyprichromis a try. I think I'll buy them all from one source as there are so many varieties I don't want to take a chance on mixed breeding. I still have not decided on the variety I want yet. Oh speaking about crypts - when I brought the 180 gallon tank home two years ago and it seemed to fill the small living room, my wife threatened to bury me in it. (6 ft by 2 ft by 2 ft). She knew the tank was coming and the dimensions, but when you see it in the house it is different.
  9. I'm thinking of putting my 180 gallon tank to use as a Tang. tank and am thinking about Cyprichromis, which I have never had before. Some questions: 1) Pros and Cons to this fish? 2)How many of each gender? 3)Which varieties are most colorful and not too rare? 4)Any other fish to keep with them? 5) Good stores to find them in Calgary or Alberta Aquatica members that often sell them?
  10. I had Frontosas in mine for two years. Saw them grow - had a spawning. It was fun but now my 180 is waiting for new ideas too.
  11. The first month I have a bare tank - no sand - no rocks. I want to see what is happening - eating, deaths, etc. After that I add a couple of small rocks - not much.
  12. We don't have BigAls in Calgary.
  13. I need a 4 foot light (typical black housing - one tube) fixture. I don't need a whole canopy. Just the standard 48 inch by 4 inch "box." Has anyone in Calgary priced them out at various fish stores?
  14. Baby lab fry - less than an inch - have never been shy whether on their own or with other fish. However, I have found that over an inch in length are often skittish unless there are other outgoing fish in the tank.
  15. Not sure if this is the right place to inquire, but what what happened to my buddies' list and comments about them.Who decided what "friends" I got and is there a help section explaining all of this?
  16. Dark one inch at one end when not on, and doesn't light up every time. When it does, the light doesn't seem bad. Only used about 5h per day for one yr.
  17. I bought a light there a year ago (HDD-600). Not a standard tube but two thin ones stuck together. It was cheap enough but now I wonder where I can get replacement tubes.

    Powerhead

Aqua Clear powerheads are rated 8.89/10 in the review section of Cichlid-Forum. Anyone had any experience with that brand?

    Powerhead

I have an Eheim 2213 and two Eheim 2217s on my 180 gallon. I tried an AClear for extra water movement but it doesn't fit well. I'd llike to add a powerhead to move the dead spots in the tank. Can you suggest a brand, model, and a place in Calgary that might carry it?
  20. That's great - I'd carry a pair of rubber/plastic undies just in case your excitement gets the best of you!! I had Bolivian Rams spawn last year - they hatched but disappeared in the tank of 4 adults. The next time I caught some fry and put them in a 10 gallon by themselves but they died at week three. I hope you have better luck.

    Too Much Flow

Would drilling the existing holes a little wider make any difference?
  22. I have a 90 gallon with two AC500s (110). It works very well. Prior to that I had an AC 500 and an Eheim 2217 canisiter, that worked every bit as well, the only reason for the change was that I needed the Eheim elsewhere.
