  1. They'll just kinda dissolve and leave hard "pebbles" My harlequin shrimp will sometimes kill a starfish (chocolate chip usually), and the skin will begin to disolve and expose the pebbles underneath before they can consume it otherwise i can never tell if its alive or dead unless it moves, and im not usually curious enough to go rooting around looking for one to flip over and inspect the tubules
  2. Assuming your not going for anything too challenging coral wise (softies, easy lps)... Dual 175w halides (250w like murray said if you like the really like the blue look, and youll end up upgrading eventually anyway), or maybe a 4 or 6 bulb T5 setup. Personally i hate PCs and only use VHO for actinic Seios have great bang for the buck for powerheads Skimmers...only thing i can really recommend that ive used personally is a HOB remora pro, if you dont have a sump. However, i have two, and one sorely out performs the other. Dont know if its manufacturing tolerances or what. If i had to do it again, id keep an eye out for a used deltec mc500 or mce600. As for in sump, im sure somebody can help. My current in sump and the one being built were custom jobs hth, and i think i busted the bank
  3. They're not perfect, but they're definitely a step up from hydrometers
  4. Dimensions? and what kinda coral did you want to keep?
  5. Thats a 6" Miniatus Grouper munching on a 3.5" checkerboard wrasse The wrasse was beating the hell out of a 3" red coris wrasse, i threw him in with mikey and the grouper last night with the intention of setting up something more permanent tonight Guess he would have rather spent the night in a bucket :chair:
  6. a kind of Tunicate Harmless filter feeders
  7. Water change Gotten any ideas for stocking yet?
  8. Let the tank go through its cycle again. Don't worry about wasting salt on water changes. If theres just sand and rock, give it time (couple months ideally, or more) to fall back into equalibrium and start reintroducing the livestock. Also, if your just going to be keeping LPS, its not really essential to dose alk. Your currently extremely high as well. Most with mainly sps tanks shoot for a dKH of 11, and 12 is the high end of "safe". Keep up with your water changes once everything settles and dont worry about dosing until the clam/sps bug bites RO/DI's are nice, but not essential. Lots of people keep very nice tanks using treated tap water.
  9. First thing to come to mind is releasing trapped "crap" from the sandbed. If the rock was transported poorly, dieoff from that as well. Have you tested your new sw for ammonia? It's also time for new test kits Just noticed something... Are you dosing alk or using a kalk reactor?
  10. Lookin pretty sweet Mark Hows that cleaner holding up?
  11. Get a refractometer, or find somebody that does and compare your hydrometers against them. Refractometers aren't perfect, but they're usually better than the best hobbyist hydrometers
  12. Any wrasses Chris? Cirrhilabrus?
  13. Ran outta time mostly, all the water changes got monotonous, and the saltwater bug bit me hard 12 discus tanks turned into 8 saltwater tanks
  14. Used to... Still can't help but stop and admire them. Especially the little guys begging for food.
  15. Pretty much what Blade said. If you just have the tank (no sump), remoras, or a remora Pro in your case for later upgrades, are good beginner/intermediate skimmers. There are better and worse hangons, but its a good starting point. Avoid Prisms. I've also heard good things about turbofloaters, if i remember correctly. 50-60lbs of rock would be a good start. Either golds in calgary, or ship it in from J&L. I have from both and am equally happy with it. If your in Calgary, i'd say just pick it up from there. Otherwise shipping it in from Vancouver is "around" $20-$25 for a 50lb box.
  16. I've got a couple fish coming in from J&L on wednesday Anybody else that wants in, their livestock lists can be found here: http://www.jlaquatics.com/phpstore/store_p...category_ID=101 Ask for Jeff, and have it sent with my order to edmonton. Orders must be called in by tuesday evening (April 11th) This is for livestock only, no rock or drygoods PS...Forgot to mention, delivery will be most likely early afternoon wednesday. I will make the pickup from the airport, orders can then be picked up at my place in north Edmonton. I can hold/float bags for those that can't make it until the evening.
  17. 90g tank with an amalgam of rock from different sources. What used to be a thin sand bed the dragon wrasse has since moved to one half of the tank. A single seio 1500 for water movement, and the skimmer is a Remora Pro w/mag 7. This tanks been set up as is for about 6 months, but everything in it has been in my possession for probably a year or more. Currently holds... 1 x 7" Lunare Wrasse (Thallasoma Lunare). Had him for about a year and a half, used to be the angelfish culler, eats anything, hence "Mikey likes it" 1 x 3" Dragon Wrasse (Novaculichthys Taeniourus) New addition 1 x 2" Red Coris Wrasse (Coris Gaimard) 2 months with me and a black bristle start approx 18" in diameter I’ve had for 6 years Feeding time is one hell of a show
  18. Foil and a fan or make a "cage" out of pvc pipe to sit on top of the tank and line it with corrugated plastic. Definatly need a fan for that though
  19. Wandj, Im sorry for your loss, everyone hates loosing fish like this. Heated hold or not, the package should still be warm even after 2 days at 0'C if they were packed correctly. i wouldn't be so quick to blame it on the carrier for a few hour delay
  20. Just in case, new home and new surroundings and all that...might get frisky being in a nice clean tank
  21. Just to let everyone know i havent forgotten Details are still being worked out, and we could have access to some real interesting stuff (Google Haitian Lettuce Rock for some interesting shapes). Ill have more details as time permits and i can get more of my poop together Soon
  22. :eh: You should still be researching before your buying. Glad your doing it now before you buy more, wish you did it before you bought the panther grouper. He will get big, he will get mean. You've been given good advice already. Find the grouper a good home, then go after some of the fish on your list. As long as that panther is in there your options are very limited. Don't be surprised, if you've looked after the panther well, if he's a foot long next spring. Not much will be safe from him
  23. Yep its normal. More water changes or throw a carbon bag in somewhere. A fine coating of algea on the pane through which your viewing will also give the tank an overall yellow look, just take a razor to it if need be.
