Terrie Lee
I went shopping today at Nature's Corner Store (fun as always) I was there to buy more filters for my tanks as one of mine had broken. (booo!) On a whim I bought 3 spotted platies. I am not sure what exactly they are called but they are very pretty. To my surprise when I went to put them into my tank I noticed 2 tiny babies in the bottom of the bag. During careful observation I figured out which one was giving birth and got out my breeding trap. I popped her in expecting her to stop giving birth right away due to the stress of the trap. She did not! She is currently pooping out more babies as I type this! I think she is up to 20 now and looking kinda empty. Anyone know how long I can leave her in there before the babies start looking like lunch? Sam Chicklets
If she looks like she is done then you should probably move her right away.
Terrie Lee
As I was watching her she ate one so I put her in the tank. I figure that was a good indication she overstayed her welcome in the breeding trap. I still have 16 babies left though! Cool! I haven't had babies in a long time! Slough Shark
A good idea might be to put the female in a 5 gallon or so with a net (butterfly net) on the surface. When she drops the yound, they will fall through to the bottom and hide (give them some Java Moss). Just an idea!
Terrie Lee
How soon should I feed the babies?
Sam Chicklets
I don't know when to start feeding them. I do not use a breeding trap for my live bearers, I just let them do thing in a planted tank with naja grass or hornwort and the smart ones survive. So they get fed with the rest of their tank mates. Qattarra
Once they are born they no longer have a yolk sac. Feed right away, crushed flakes or pellets, micro worms, vinegar eels etc. Feed often only what they eat , tiny bits of uneaten food spoils their water. Congrats and enjoy ! spark740
You are so lucky Terrie Lee! I am addicted to livebearers too I have 13 guppies. But I cannot get them to breed no matter how hard I try, no matter how many times I try. I used to have a lot of sucess with them buut now i can only get them to breed when I buy an already pregnant female from the pet shop. Ah well, but one of my larger baby fish might be pregnant. I have a male wild guppy (yikes wild ones are so small) and he keeps trying to mate with the bigger females but hes just to small. But anyways, congrats on your fry! PS introducing a baby into the big tank, leaving it there for a week or two and then putting the rest in will reduce aggression towards the fry. I did that, I tworked like a miracle! after the first fry was in, there were no bothers from other fish at all!
krazy_Karma
Congrats, I know I bought a platy the other day she was also loaded, she started to stick close to the bottom of the tank, so I put her in the breeding trap, I went to bed at about 4 she didnt have any of the babies yet, when I woke she had only one baby left as she had them then ate them all but the one, since then I have bought a few more things for my tank, such as plants, and ornaments so they can hide and Im not using the breeding trap any more, less I am right here to watch to insure life isnt lost in this same manner. I love the dalmaton platies they are black and white speckled, I dont have any of those at the moment but sure did love them when I had them, not sure what happened but they moved on, the other speckled is the calico they are multi colored all speckled, very pretty again. Currently I have 2 solid blacks, one is black with white fins, these are all sail fin platies, I also have a highfin. Good luck with your babies, from the information I have read it says to feed the babies often 3 or 4 times a day, so I have my baby that is left still in the trap and feed him several times a day, what falls through the trap the other fish get, my little baby is growing fast, is about 4 days old now and a little girl looks like, so happy to have her. Again congrats on your babies.
