Ambient light and time of day for timmer

Ambient lighting doesn't really count for much unless the tank is near a window and getting direct sunlight. If you're going to be viewing the tank in the evenings more than the mornings, then set the timer to be on later. Whatever the schedule, the plants will adapt to it- some species will close up towards the end of their "day".

Does it bother the fish to have the sun come on at 6AM and the lights on til 11, or do they still get enough down-time? (If they don't mind, I'm going to have to do that, because as it is, I generally miss the lights-on time being out and about.)

my timers are set 1am to 9am in non planted tanks.

the display lights are only on for 8 hours but thats cause i dislike algae.

my fish room is dark enough during the day and any work during the day can be done with room lighting.

whoops planted tank forum, i thought it was gd (10 or 12 hours)
