PrincessGoodey
Hi, I am fairly new to the cichlid world. I have a 80 gallon planted tank that I have gradually put in a mixture of mbunas. This evening when I was watching this tank I found two babies. I don't know from who and there appears to be no one "guarding" them. Is there anything special I should be doing for them? Quite honestly I was just happy with getting the tank up and running and stable. I have only set up this tank a few months ago. I am thrilled to have the babies I just was not sure if there is anything I should be doing? Can anyone offer any advice? Thanks. new cichlid owner
jvision
Mbuna females will hold their eggs in their mouth until they hatch and are too big to hold anymore. If you noticed any of your mbuna with a full mouth like they were chewing bubble gum for the last 2 weeks or so, that's who they came from. punman
If you want to raise fry you could put the fry in their own tank, but for two fish I doubt I would bother. If you are serious about the idea, next time isolate the female in her own tank or strip the fry after 3 weeks from the mother. I'd probably just leave the 2 fry and let them fend for themselves although they might get eaten.
