punman
I don't know Bettas but because I have tropical fish a friend thinks I might be able to answer this question. (I can't). Should he use regular Calgary tap water or the water coming through his water softener?

punman
Are you using regular tap water because it is better than the water softener source, or are using tap water because that is the only option you have? I want to know if one type is better for these fish than the other.
Wingin' It
I use it 'cause it's the only thing I have...but as of late i've been using the Brita water pitcher (as suggested by a fellow Betta enthusiast) and ageing it and adding a bit of the almond leaf extract. BettaFishMommy
tap water and a good water conditioner is all you need for bettas. i`ve used Aquaplus since i started my finkid addiction and it works well for me. i've heard that Prime is not a good water conditioner to use if your betta is in an unfiltered bowl. don't know the full reasoning behind this, but it may be due to certain ingredients in Prime. no need to use filtered or bottled water at all. fishclubgirl
Actually a brita is used to reduce the ph(8.0) of Calgary's harder than rock water. Bettas do prefer softer water and I use filtered water in my breeding tanks. Growing up, I used softened water but can't say I had the success that I'm having now in unsoftened water. However there are many factors that have contributed to my enjoyment of the hobby, too numerous to mention. In closing, bettas are fine in aged Calgary water(believe me, I have enough!!)!! Mermy - Fish Noob
I don't know Bettas but because I have tropical fish a friend thinks I might be able to answer this question. (I can't).Should he use regular Calgary tap water or the water coming through his water softener? I've actually heard that bettas don't like water that's too soft. What ever water you use just make sure it's consistant. They will get used to whatever it is. I have acreage water that is uber hard and my boys like it just fine =)
werner
With a household water softener, the calcium and magnesium is just replaced with lots of sodium. If you choose to soften the water, mix tap water with some distilled or RO water instead.
