werner
I believe that they no longer exist due to some issues regarding patent rights for the technology that they were using. Read this article.
Dipset
They copied a patent that had something to due with NASA I believe, got sued and claimed bankruptcy. You can still buy their systems but they're very high in price. check out reefgeek.com
Baos
I remember playing with leds when I was 10. I even build a working radio from circuit parts. But today I don't remember much of that. I just have no idea why they are charging so much for led lighting? I might just have to build my own. snaggle
Hmmm I was hoping that the prices would have come down from when I first saw them 3 or 4 years ago. Dose any one know a good place to get LED lights for a planted tank?

Sorry Snaggle, Hijacking your thread for a second; Werner, do you know if there is such a patent in Canada?
werner
No idea about the patents in Canada. I have seen small little LED light strips on eBay, etc. and I have small LED bulbs for my Edge aquarium, but I don't think they're suitable as a stand alone light for larger tanks. PFO's Solaris fixture was great (I almost bought one myself.) Apparently the next new big thing in aquarium lighting will be plasma. Start saving up your $$$$... Dipset
They have started playing with Hid's and projectors with aquariums. There are a few websites with info on them.
bosshog
Hey Snaggle, I've spent the last three evenings reading about led arrays. I need a light system for my new 110 gal reef tank and can't decide what I want. LED's are a possibility, but they are really bloody expensive, even for a DIY array. I'll post up some links for you. Some are prebuilt others are the components for diy. The first one from nano-reef is a really good reference for DIY, these guys seem to be ahead of the crowd on reef central. http://www.nano-reef.com/forums/index.php?...6982&st=380 http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthre...hreadid=1587273 The info on this build is also in the link from nano-reef, it was devised on nano-reef and documented on RC. DIY LED's www.kaidomain.com www.dealextreme.com www.besthongkong.com Prebuilt Systems http://www.lck-led.com/LED-Aquarium-Lighti...0323ccf510ba06e I haven't done any reading to know what a planted fresh tank would need in terms par or temperature for the plants. I'd assume that it would be easier to build a planted tank setup than a reef one as most white led have a lower k rating than needed for a reef tank. Some of the grow lights on ebay may work for what you need and be waaaayyyyy cheaper than what a reef tank needs. I'll post more links tonight as I do more research, I know I've seen more prebuilt systems I just don't know where.

And he's somewhere in Canada I doubt that fixture would be of any value over a tank. Those tiny leds don't put out much. I don't know about planted tanks but reef tanks are having good luck with 3w led arrays.
snaggle
Wow now I have lots of reading to do, I think I might just end up doing alot of DIY LED lights, I have lots of tanks that I want to use them on. Most of my tanks wont be planted so I wont need lots of light.
bosshog
I think one of those small led arrays would be worth trying on a fowlr type tank. The color control you have with them would be amazing and a couple thousand small emitters is only going to cost you a few bucks. Don't like the color rip it apart and put in a new combination of colors. These things are going to be amazing in the future with the amount of research and development that is going on. I've been doing so much research on them I talked myself right out of it for my 110, my kids ordered me a new 8 bulb t-5 fixture this morning. Now they need to get a job to pay for it. The little darlings used my CC.

I decided to buy one panel of the red/blue and test it out on a corner of the tank.
bosshog
Sweet lets see some pictures after you get it setup and running. I don't suppose you have access to a lightmeter, it would be cool to get some readings of the output from your new setup.
