Best Sand

I use pool filter sand or playsand as it is cheap and does the job. But if you could have any sand for your cichlid tank and price was no object, what would you choose and why?

I use Fluorite Sand since it's black (the color I like) and good for growing plants. I don't know many other kinds of sands lol.

I love how black sand looks and brings out the colors of most fish. I bought 3 cases of black sand to fill a 135 a few years back - it was the most expensive part of the tank (almost as much as the tank itself!), but well worth it!

I also use Fluorite black sand in one of my tanks and definitely was pricey. At the time I was thinking I was crazy buying such expensive substrate but have come to really like the looks of my plants. Mind you I have no frame of reference with using other sand since I started the hobby and went straight for Fluorite and Fluorite sand since I was doing planted tanks. :thumbs:

I like argonite sand. It has a nice tone compared to playsand and looks good with white keystone or granite. I don't have any plants in my cichlid tanks, but if I did I probably would use flourite.

I have a few tanks with straight black sand and a few tanks with varying degrees of white and black sand. But my fav is the white carib reef sand that is powder like. The raspeberry heads leave nice lil impreints in it, as do the gobies
