Wingin' It
As I was parusing the isles at one of the LFSs I noticed 5 lonely female swordtails and a studly male sitting in a tank so close to the ground you wouldn't really notice they were there at all...and in the words of fishclubgirl..."They looked at me." So I had to take them home! hahahaha After we put them in the tank, the males Guppies started chasing them, mating behaviour like! So I look up whether or not these fish can cross breed...and apparently they can! Holy freakin'! lol Well, good thing the angels are vicious and will eat all the fry, but whata cross that'd be eh?! I think i'm going to have to find some more female Guppies at the auction to take some pressure off these girls! hahaha Anywho, just thought it was amusing and thought i'd share. Evolution
If they can crossbreed I wonder why we don't see guppords and sworpies? I wonder if people buy gravid females, put them in with other horny livebearers of another species and genus that go through the motions and then all of a sudden!!! "I only have female guppies and male swords and I got babies!" Yet what really happened was the guppy was knocked up before the person introduced it to the tank, because female livebearers can store sperm for up to a year inside them. Wingin' It
hahaha...true! Sworpies has a ring to it! lol I never see any fry in my tank 'cause of the angels...but it sure would be something to see! LOL

vince0
swordtails and guppies cannot cross breed, they are very different species... swordtails and platies can crossbreed, guppies and endlers can crossbreed as well, but not guppies and swordtails... that would be interwebs misinformation. i'm sorry to rain on your parade
Wingin' It
haha...thanks Vince. There was never any parade! lol but I guess I should have kept reading more on the net instead. This morning however, my male Guppies are still harassing the female swordtails! lol it's amusing to watch.
vince0
does the male guppy have a few females to harass? i've seen wierder things... like a gay male guppy... i have to say guppies aren't really that high on the fish intelligence scale lol
Wingin' It
Oh yes, he has several females to harass, but the male to female ratio is like 1 to 1 which keeps the females always prego. My males are always courting each other too! lol Amusing to watch for sure. I guess at auction time i'll be buying more fish! Although Guppies aren't intelligent by any means, they sure are colorful and add a nice touch of color to the tank.
