UV sterilizers

Recommended Posts

Was looking @ a pond UV sterilizer a couple weeks ago (laguna, can't remember the model #, but it was $170, and rated for ponds up to 1200 gal) But anyway, it showed on the diagram that it is in-line, with only 1/2 the water volume passing through to the filter. The woman in the store explained that this is so it doesn't kill off all the good bacteria. But in time, wouldn't you end up doing that anyway? I know nothing about these, but want to add one to our large aquarium in the near future.

Should be kinda like this. 230 gal, w/4000 gal./hr pump. 1/2 of the overflow to the filter would pass through the UV system. So @ this rate, wouldn't you end up running 7X the water volume through it in an hour anyway? (approx.)

Any help would be great.

Thanks

Rob

I found these 2 sites provide a huge amount of data regarding this, from what it looks like as long as you have an established filter you would be fine but if you had UV on from the beginning you would effectively never cycle your tank.
