_sheebz
I have a lot of driftwood in my tank, all bought from aqua giant. Not sure the exact type, Malaysian maybe? The tannins in the wood turn my tank yellow after about a week after water changes. I was wondering if anyone knows how long it takes the tannins to completely leetch from the wood? I've had it all in my tank for about a year now
Sprucegruve
tannins never really leave the wood, after 2-3years it releases less tannins. with 30-40% weekly water changes your water shouldent be that dark
secretlaw
I am not sure by boiling the wood will work or not. I did try on my driftwood and it seems working.
jvision
Boiling does cause the wood to release a lot of tannins at once. It may not take out all of the tannins, but that's not all bad. Tannins have an anti-fungal property, so if your fish are spawning, it will actually help with egg-health. If it's more of an aesthetic problem, then adding some Carbon to your filter will help keep your tank water clear.
FishTankBoy
I have a large piece that was in my tank for 2 years. I then shutdown the tank for a year and am now soaking it again in a white bucket. It's still releasing a lot of tannins.
